Hey I was wondering if any of you Long Island guys could tell me if you can put a bass boat into Forge Pond and if so if theres a size limit. I know LIB has tourneys out of it but dont know if they use jon boats or not. Looking to go somewhere other then sh@ty Lake Ronkonkoma lol. Any info would be great thanks!

If you can put your 20 ft Triton in there, lemme know. I used to fish Forge on my 17 ft tin Triton, but that damn hole by the spillway keeps getting deeper and deeper.

Perhaps you need to get that Pleco thingie...

Ronk? Shitty? ....hmmmm..I gotta find that out for myself...

That is a VERY difficult water to get a bassboat in and out of; certainly not an improved ramp by any means.
I doubt you'd get your rig in there, Jared, or worse, not get it out.

Well then it looks like Ronkonkoma for me lol def not going to take the chance at all of driving out to some lake I most likely wont be able to get my boat out of knowing my luck lol. Hey Joe I fish there all the time in the summer that place is great but not really to sure this time of year. I wish there were more places on the island I could put my big boat on...

Here's a hint, they dont fly south when it gets cold. For all your pro staffing, I am sure you can find a few.

I used to get my 16 ft Alumacraft thru the opening in the trees, however the rains have washed a big hole there with at least a 12" drop from the asphalt to the sand,no way you would safely get a 20 ft boat thru there.Ronks not bad when you get to know it.(Especially with high water)

I live in upstate now but cut my "fishing teeth" of the "ponds" of Eastern LI. Forge was one of my favorites.

If you want something different, go fish Wildwood lake just south of Riverhead. If I remember correctly, there is launching for a bigger boat on the east side of the lake. You won't be able to use your outboard there unless somethings changed, but you won't need it! I used to launch a 16.5 boat off a trailer there. (Also at Forge from the bay on the mid-south section of the lake) Wildwood should still have a great population of Bass! Some big fish too at least there used to be. Thats were I caught my biggest bass, a 9.9lber. It's also where I lost a nice matching Shimano rod and reel one evening! Got limp wristed on a cast! (I don't miss the old pistol grip rods!)

BTW, this time of year and through to spring for that matter, its a great time to start 'scouting" these lakes for access points. Thats how I did it.

There's a lot of great places to fish on the "Island of Long", from 3 nice lakes in Montauk (One has some smallies in it), to smallmouth on Shelter Island and nice largemouth from Laural lake in Mattituck. (Only carry in there at least back in the day.)

Anyway, good luck and if you get to Forge or any of the others, catch one for me!

Check with the DEC about Wildwood first. Just had a fellow PM me and he said the lakes only for residents. They tried that crap back in the 80's too but DEC said it wasn't true so I fished there when ever I wanted with out an issue. Italways amazed me because with one exception, none of the residents ever fished it or even boated on it. Far as I know it was one or two residents with a "we're better than you" attitude. I think they thought they were living in the Hamptons!

As for Montauk, there's Fort Pond, (LM, SM, Striper Hybrids) Big Reed Pond (LM) and Fresh Pond in Hither Hills (LM, maybe SM). Those are the ones I remember.

Go to Googles home page http://www.google.com/ and in the upper right you'll see "Maps". Click it and type in Montauk NY. Move the map around with your mouse to see the ponds/lakes. In the upper right, there's a button called "Satellite". Click on this and you'll get a satellite view of the area too.

Forget Wildwood, the town has posted no parking all over the place that they enforce.Fort should be okay, but I don't think you can use the big motor there.I know I use to use a 25 hp Evinrude on Forge, when I checked with the DEC, there were no horsepower restrictions due to a river (moving body of water) but the only way you can launch there would be with a PLECO tag. Hither Hills you will never make over the ralroad tracks with a big boat,(high crown on the tracks).

some of my best days at forge have been in december....the water never freezes and if the bass are off the pickeral are on.....there are only 2 deep spots so the fish seem to group up......there is also a launch at the fishermans deli....i lost a few beasts there
