Schroon would not be a very good tournament destination. That lake is a great pike and lake trout lake....but to get bass its few and far between, and mostly they are on the smaller side. However, I have never fished it from a boat in the open water season, I do ice fish it during the winter...and I have several friends that have spent time on there going for bass with very little to show for it.

its not a very well liked bass lake compared to the others around it.

some other forum members will chime in that have actual experience on this lake.

 

So where in here did you say there was big ones in the lake??? So you have never fished the lake from a boat.... but yet your giving your opinion on the bass fishing. I've spent time on the lake in a boat... yes once you get away from the spawn it fishes tough but not impossible to catch fish. The cover is limited and when you have 30-40 boats beating the same 3 cribs up over 8 hours it makes the the lake seem like it doesn't have them in it. It all depends on what your club is looking for, if your looking for a slugfest then head to champlain.

 

Our club along with others have stopped at schroon many times. They still go back. It is Basic Adirondack bass fishing. Some of the biggest tournament bass weighed in have come out of schroon... 7#ers... can get windy. If your going in the summer get your rooms early... Summer crowd plus Saratoga Track can leave you room less...

Watch for the boat-washing policy to move to this lake (and other lakes in NY eventually ? ) soon. I fished at Loon Lake in the fall...my boat is always washed and spotless, which doesnt make any difference to the inspectors. First, he attached the muffs and had to run my motor till reached certain temp w/ his digital thermometer. Then approx. 10-15 minute power wash of the trailer and boat, then wanted to inspect all the rods & reels I planned to use that day. Well he saw 3 cuz at this time we were pushing over 20 minutes of time. The inspector, who I will say was a nice guy, advised that Schroon Lake was close to having this policy there, but no $$ to buy the self-enclosed washer trailer.......the plan was for boat inspections to be done at Loon, attach the tag to your trailer, and then you could go to Schroon to launch, showing your inspection tag. Put it this way.....you dont see a whole lot of tx's going out of there....my club hasn't fished there in about 3 years....there's a reason.

 

There are 5+ Lbs. fish in there for sure but having fished it extensively I would not recommend it for a bass touranment. The bass fishing can be tough, there are only a limited or handful of bass areas in the entire lake, if you know them great if not it'll be a long day fishing prime looking bass areas but yielding small results if any, which is shown in the results posted, if the winner hadn't bagged the seven he has four 2 lbers. And over half the field didn't get a limit. It's good for smallies in the spring, after that good luck finding them. A good pike lake and many lakers, not a lot of cover, although that is changing as milfoil moves into certain areas, but if the pike decide to setup camp in those weeds bye bye Mr. Bass.

 

I have family members that have fished the lake a ton of times, and also other guys I fish with that are members on this forum. I personally have not put my boat on that lake, simply because I have never heard a good story to persuade me to do so....I do keep driving to champlain, as like most of us.

The OP lives in NJ....cut the guy some slack and save him the time and money for him and his club. There are a ton of other lakes around we can recommend to him that will fish better. Check out some of the other post's in this thread...others are recommending NOT to make it a tourney destination.

The OP was asking for information on the lake, you immediately post about how bad the lake is, that's YOUR opinion which you are entitled to, we all know your not shy about sharing your opinion. you are missing it too then, if I am. The OP asked how we would rate this lake as a tournament destination....we gave our input...and you helped by posting some tournament results...which showed 13 out of 32 boats only brought in a limit. Thats not even half the field.

you would say thats a good tournament destination for a club coming out of NJ? It doesnt matter how you do there..its how the lake fishes in general. You even said its tough.

The internet......A hell of a place !

 

Last time my club was there (2012) the winning bag was 18.29 lbs which included a 5lb lunker. Average weight was about 2lbs each. It's a decent body of water to fish IMO.

 

Fished it quite a few times. Had some very good days and some brutal days. As a whole, once you get past the spawn it is a tough lake. I would not travel from Jersey to fish a tournament there. Better off to fish Lake George or even Sacandaga.

 

I fished an Adirondack lake last year at a retail event I did. It wad pouring rain the first day of the event so we had almost no customers. I started tossing a trout swim bait and got several hits from musky and big pike. Then I started getting some different hits. She finally followed the bait and it was by far the biggest bass I have seen in ny. Don't discount the Adirondack lakes. I usually find the lakes with the smallest large mouth populations have the biggest ones

Thanks for the responses guys. We are a NJ based club but we do not fish any club events in NJ. We fish Sacandaga, Champlain, Saratoga, Mohawk, Hudson, Candlewood, etc. I am looking at some new destinations that we not fished in the past. I have driven past Schroon a hundred times and figured I'd ask about it. We would have anywhere from 15-25 boats depending on how many members fished the event. I like to explore new water and Schroon is one of those Adirondack lakes I have yet to fish. I appreciate all the comments either positive or negative. I know everyone has different experiences with different bodies of water. I'm more concerned with the boat check talk....I know that has pretty much stopped many clubs and organizations from going to Lake George anymore. Thanks again for all the help....Mark
