Hi ALL!

Does anyone have any information or knowledge of the banning of 2 stroke outboards in NYS by the EPA and specifically in the Central New York area.

My son said today he heard the DEC and EPA was going to start a 2 cycle ban on the Seneca River, Onondoga Lake and a couple of other waterways in the CNY area.

Hearsay, at this point I don't know.

No ban on 2 strokes in CA

Facts About Two-Stroke Vessel Engines

* Two-stroke engines are not "banned" for use on all waterways in California, nor is there any plan to do so.
* Carbureted and electronic-injection two-stroke engines are considered high-emission engines. Generally, these engines were manufactured prior to 1999.
* A carbureted two-stroke engine can emit up to 25-30 percent of its fuel unburned into the water or atmosphere, which is why high-emission engines are prohibited on some lakes.
* There are no salt-water or river restrictions in California on high-emission two-stroke engines, excluding personal watercraft (vessels such as Jet Skis) bans in some areas. For example, San Francisco has prohibited personal watercraft within 1200 feet of its shoreline. See "Local Restrictions" on our Web page for a list of lakes.
* Direct injection two-stroke engines, made since 1999, are considered clean emission engines and can be used on every water body in California, with some exceptions not related to emission limits.
* A new direct injection two-stroke engine will normally have a label sticker (with 1 to 3 stars) on its engine cover indicating that it meets California Air Resources Board emission regulations for 2001, 2004, and 2008 for vessel engine manufacturers.

Hi All!

And thanks Paul_M for responding to my inquiry. I did follow up on the website you mentioned and for those who would be interested on another page at that site read:

Facts About Two-Stroke Vessel Engines

(Their very first fact was this:)

Two-stroke engines are not "banned" for use on all waterways in California, nor is there any plan to do so.

There were other facts but this one seemed to be the most important for the thread I started.

When my son called me the other night and asked if I had received the Bass Pro Shop 2006 Catalog he told me to turn to the last page on boats in the catalog.

I was a little surprised and also just a little more upset about the wording the Bass Pro Shop put together; This was because my son and I just purchased a $17,000 Tracker V18 Allfish with a 90 horse Merc 2-stroke engine in Oct that had only touched the surface of water 5 times.

In one statement was:

It is becoming increasingly harder to find a carburated 2-stroke.eng. In California, those 2-strokes have been banned for years and (then in bright bold lettering continued with) other states are considering similar bans.

Then another statement read:

The buyer may not even be allowed to use that older-technology outboard because of stricter EPA regulations in many states.

I think you can easily see why my son and I viewed those statements with a great deal of apprehension because of the wording. We know there are some waterways in NYS that have bans such as Reservoirs where drinking water is stored and some of the private lakes around the State, but to imply the way they did was out of Pro Bass Caricature.

I guess they to think when it comes to sales its the almighty dollar that counts.

Thanks again to those who responded and "Happy New Year" to all. The way the snows coming down right outside my window I can't wait 'til the 1st of April.
