I think it starts with injuries. Jeter, a-roid, tex, grandy, etc. on top of that while I don't believe they "run out of money", they are an older team with quite a few mostly "untradable" contracts. For what it's worth I liked them better in the early petite/Bernie/jeter/posada years. Building with the farm system after the aweful 80's (Donnie baseball the exception).
The team that believed pitching was the path to championships turned to spending on offense first.
Seems the Mets and Yankees are fighting for last place and wonder which one will get there first! I also wonder if the old man had lived another fives years if this would have happened. Jr. is not his dad.
