I ventured out onto Lake Welch today. One of the things I have been trying to accomplish this year is my goal of catching 1,000 bass. I was sitting on 996 before I went to Welch.

The day started out slow, as I went to the very disappointing "Saddle Area" on the south side of "The Island". Not a sniff! I moved to the point on the north end of the island and threw a buoy marker out at the very end of the point. I worked it over with my Luhr Jensen Speed Trap in Texas Red and was greeted with a nice 2.0lb smallie. Once unhooked I motored back to the spot and on the next cast I got a decent keeper largie. It was around 12:30, and I had been out for an hour. Andrew Bornn called me to let me know he would be joining me, so I went and picked him up at the ramp.

Once I got him, we immediately headed to the "Pump House". Nothing...."Holey Tree"...Nothing...but at the "Boat House" Bornn connected on the jig n pig with this largie. It had him all wrapped up in a rope that was tied to the bottom.

I was throwing a Poes 300 Series Crank in a Dark Red/Black Pattern. In a short while I landed fish #999 which was a decent largie. We pounded it some more but there were no takers.

Over at the beach area things picked up. This is where we got 9 of our fish. I cranked up fish #1,000 on the year first. Then I nailed a nice smallie. Here is a pic of the smallie.

On the day, I got 4 smallies and they were all at least 2.0lbs...not bad for Welch. Bornn picked up his 3rd fish on a Norman crankbait. I just kept plugging along with my Poes 300 in red. Most of the fish were hitting on the pause...a sure sign that jerkbaits would have also been killer. Andrew finally threw on a pointer and in no time, this healthy bass hit:

Of course, I couldn't let Bornn show me up! LOL! Minutes later I nailed this 4.7lber largie on the crank. Its gut was ready to burst!

Andrew got another fish on the pointer and I got one on the way back at the North end of the Island. I wound up with 10 and Andrew had 4. Not bad for a November afternoon.

You guys like the masked Hugefish look? LOL! Hey...it kept me warm OK! LOL :p<center>

Will SOMEONE buy this guy a Carhart and a Blaze orange Hunting Hat?

Huge,
You, my friend, have had a year that No One can replicate.
Over 1000 fish in one season??? You are going to be the sorriest mother in the world when you are looking out the window from an office somewhere knowing me and The Doc are on a lake somewhere come next season...
Since you have kept stats...How many days? Fish per day? That sort of thing?
I would be interested if you kept numbers on techniques...I would love to know how many you cranked up !!!!!
Great Job again Johnnie!!!!

Woody, I got the stats and will compile them at year end. Plenty of fishing left ya know! You will see that I arrived at that gaudy # of fish by fishing a ton. I only have about a handful of days with more than 20 fish..non over 30. Just a lot of trips! Of course this "total" includes non-keeper bass as well. Approximately 3.1% of this total was over 4lbs. I will provide a breakdown on techniques when all lakes have ice or January rolls around ...whichever comes first.

Simply awesome post, John! 1000 bass? When I caught over 400 Smallies a couple years ago, I thought that was a feat.

Congrats on doing it, John! And let me guess......not ONE of those fish were caught on Senkos. :p

If you think the "Masked HugeFish" look is goofy, then you should check out the photos of me on my Canadice Lake Report. Trust me, you'll feel a LOT better! :D

regardless of what he caught them on, John is undoubtedly our NyBass.com fisherman of the year......

a dream season many only can imagine......

as Wood pointed out, when he is back into full time employment, he is going to get the shakes for a while! LOL.....

last season, before his Baby was in full swing, Jeff the Senko Baron had a similar season, again, with an incredible number of fishing sessions plus many many lunkers.....

every year, someone is blessed with this type of opportunity and has the stamina and guts to work it to the max...

who will be THE MAN next year???

Earthy: are you out there? when you recoup from your wrist injury, how about spending a season plundering all your big fish spots and posting some incredible pictures on here...

who else????

John, I don't want anyone to know where I'm catching those big boys!
I just can't take photos like Huge does...there is something magical in the way he holds those fish. Perfection. I have a few photos of bigger fish but they just don't look as nice. Also, I think Huge should pose with a red/white hat and cane so he would look like Waldo from Where's Waldo. LOL Kidding bro.

Huge, just curious...how many trips did you make? I got out about 30 times times this season. 1/3rd of that being tournaments. Gone are the days where I was out on the water 200+ days. I remember some 2500+ fish years. Add to that some unfathomable big fish numbers that I haven't seen for the last few seasons. I miss it. Nowadays, though, I'm just happy to get out and catch fish of any size. To me, it is all fun. The way it should be.
Next year I plan on taking lots of video. I have a video at home that we took in 2000 with about 8 or 9 fish between 4 and 6lbs in one day. All on 1/16oz MMJ's. I'm looking for bigger next year as I will not be fishing competatively.

Congrats, Huge! Simply put...an awesome year. I have a feeling you'll be looking back on this season for years to come! Can't wait to read your season recap/stats.

Thanks for all the reports! They have certainly helped me this year, as I too had my best season ever (my third...but still my best!).

Congrats again, and NYBass angler of the year 2003 suits you well, informal or not.

Unbelievable year, John!

I remember when I first logged on this spring, the first post I read was your Monksville report. That picture of that big ol' Muskie you caught definitely caught my attention. Everytime I logged on I went looking for the "Hugefish Posts", and everytime it was very informative with great pictures to back it up.
In the summer when many of us were slumping you were there with your Rockland posts and pics to give us a reason to keep trying.
Congrats on your milestone as well as a great year of fishing.
Hopefully one day we will catch up with eachother on one of the lakes.

Thanks,

MikeYac

Earthy, I did a quick count of days fished this year. Right now it totals 170. That is not all full days...some are only an hour or two. 2,500 hundred bass...wow! That is dedication.

Also Worm....I don't quite look this geeky!

Joe...I am saving those Red Poes for next year! LOL

Mark...thanks...I need to get a permit so I can get out with you guys.

Leigh...you are always welcome on my boat.
