I can't help you on the dstance but I just wanted to thank you for bringing back some childhood memories of both Tupper Lake and Long Lake and hunting with my dad...
Bigredfishing gets around a lot up there...He may know those Adirondack areas you are looking at...

Tupper Lake is about 20 or so miles from Long Lake and should only be about half hour drive. Also from Tupper Lake you can get to Upper , Middle and Lower Saranac Lakes in about 15 minutes. Great fishing on all these lakes. Many more all over this area. Have fun. FOOTBALLS;

Does anyone have any other information on this Tupper Lake?? I'll be looking for topo maps, lodging, etc. Also, any bass-fishing information....... i.e. mostly largemouth; smallmouth; average size, etc. What is the lake(s) like? Rocky, weedy, deep, shallow?? You know, the kind of stuff you'd like to know before you venture all the way up there, to fish a tournament.
I'd be grateful for any information that someone would be willing to share. Thanks!

Have done VERY little fishing on Tupper. Sorry.
I will tell you that it is extremely rocky, with multiple small islands throughout...Most of all, IT IS WINDY!!! For whatever reason, it sits in a tunnel which catches wind even on the calmest days. Known for its toothies, but I imagine very fine smallie action out of there..
If you're up there, and want a recommendation on a place to get the best breakfast on the face of the earth, let me know.
And yes, it's only 30 or so minutes from Long Lake.

Yeah, just looking ahead a little. As long as someone else brought up the subject of Tupper, I thought maybe that someone out there knows something about the place.
I have not come to a definite conclusion on "what to do" next season. But, a couple things stick in my mind:
After having made it to the BASS Eastern Divisionals, this year, and coming to within 1 1/2 lbs. of advancing to the National Championship, I know I want to get there again, some day.
The BFL was nice, but I do have some misgivings about it. With no off-limits period at all, I find it difficult to be able to compete with those guys that seem to have unlimited time and finances. I can really, fully appreciate the NYSBCF off-limits policy. For exactly that reason, I will always defend it. The federation trail is still more designed for the weekend "Joe", like me. And, I guess the bottom line is that I still like the NYSBCF trail/people. Doing both trails is probably a bit much. You know me, I'm as die-hard as they come, but I really couldn't concentrate on anything, by taking on too much.
I'd like to also see what the new Grassroots trail may have to offer. I've heard no more about it, other than it's a definite for 2004. I'd also like to look at the Northern Opens. I'm leaving all my options open, for now.
I'll just have to see what next year brings. Right now, I just want to go out and have fun with my friends and club members, and fight with those ill-tempered smallmouth, wherever I can find them.

At Tupper Lake on 10-16-03
The wind made it impossible to fish. White caps as far as the eye could see. State boat launch on Rt. 30. I usually stay at my friend's house or at the Lakeview, right across from the town park. There are other motels in town as well. This lake is in both St.Lawrence and Franklin Co. I believe. Buy a county map at the Stewarts in town, corner of Rt. 3 & 30. There are three sections to this lake, refered to as Tupper, Racquette Pond, and Simon Pond. There is also a state boat lanuch just outside of town on Rt. 3 ( heading toward Saranac Lake ) on the Racquette River. This is where to go when its windy. I have caught some nice Northerns here, especially from Racquette Pond, on white spinnerbaits. There are places to rent boats if you want. The lake gets alot of ice fishing and snowmobiles in winter. Eat at the Lumberjack Resturant ( Rt. 3 west ) the food is great. puddlejumper.

you have touched upon the LUMBERJACK!!! The world's greatest place to get a breakfast ("served all day").
I would HIGHLY recommend "The Loader", with enough corn beef hash, home fries, texas toast, and poached eggs to put a man right, for many hours on end...Oh baby, after that, you need a smoke.
I used to skip college just to drive up for that particular platterful....

I fished it years ago (maybe 7-8) and did really well with a hard jerkbait (bomber 15) in the area just adjacent to the ramp. I will tell you that it was loaded with either Musky or Northerns. They ate every jeckbait in the box! In between were some nice smallies too.
I fished it in September if that helps.

I'd be interested in hearing any more or updated informatiom about Tupper that anyone has to share, I am thinking about spending some time there. What I've read indicates that its a good multi-species fishery with good smallie action, though I have not seen any mention of lmb in the lake.
I've also read about the wind problem mentioned by a couple of folks on this thread, but the book said that the wind can be avoided by fishing early morning and late afternoon. Whaddaya think?

I fished Tupper several times last year with little success. I was targeting smallies on the rocks and scattered weeds in the south end. If you travel north from the launch you will see a huge weed/reed bed that extends well into the lake and brings you all the way to Simon Pond. I have taken some largemouth out of this area but nothing of substanial size.
I have never fished Raquett Pond, that place gets very choppy. You can see the whitecaps from the road that goes into Tupper.
If you choose to go into the Simon Pond area be ready for some hearty Pike. If you go into the mouth of the Racquett River and travel up it you will find some neat structure (rocks, sand, blowdown, riprap) that does hold fish, again nothing of great size except Walleye and some Pike. You can travel several miles up the Raquette with a bass boat just take it easy there is alot of canoes and kayak travel there. But it is a great piece of water to fish.
It can be very windy up there. I have traveled it in my 19' Champion and I have traveled it in a canoe, I was on edge in each.
Anytime you go to fish one of the Adirondack Lakes up in that area purchase a Canoe Map, I believe they are available from the Adirondack Mountain Club. These are by far the best maps for getting around the region and often have the topographies that we fishermen crave.
I have also found that eating breakfast at the Lumberjack will cause you to have a great day regardless of the fishing.....dinner does not hurt either.
In summary, most of the locals fish for toothy critters, and most of the fish I have found do not have a substantial size to it. But it is a great place to go and fish. Just be ready for the toothy ones.
