Smallies in SE, not NYC res?

Those of you that have met me know I am not the best fisherman on here, though I have been fishing since I was 5, and do OK most of the time. :D

However, before moving to NY 4+ years ago, I never lived in a state with bronzebacks. All these posts from you guys have me itching to try to catch some. My question is where? This Indian Summer prompted me to put in for Monday off, and I'm going to get in some fishing Saturday and Monday. Does anyone have a recommendation on a lake in SE NY, (Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, Putnam, etc.) where I can put in my small boat (it's a Sea Eagle, as long as I can get up close to a launch I'm good. :D) and have a decent chance at smallies? I think I can pattern them if the fish are around, but I'm not sure of a good smally lake outside the NYC reservoirs. Wappingers Lake is one possibility, but does anyone know if the weeds are down? Only time I tried it this year you could walk across it. Let me know, if not I'll hit one of my smaller largemouth lakes each day.:beerchug:

hi John...

Hey dude, what's up? I figured I'd throw in the name of a lake that hasn't been mentioned yet...Highland Lake - about 9 miles South of Swinging Br.. I fished there once - there's a man named Peter Fink who rents boats at Sand Beach - caught one nice LMB, but I know there are some HUGE smallies in there. It's a nice-sized lake in the shape of a bear's claw and is quite deep. I don't know if the launch has changed, but I think the Sea Eagle could manage - haven't been there in a long time, but maybe some guys on the board can let you know more about it. The drive up isn't too bad (from you it's probably about an hour and a half), and the road is gorgeous. Might be a fun day for exploring. If I'm not mistaken, Sand Beach's # is (914) 557-6166, I'm not sure if the area code is right. Mr. Fink can tell you if it's open still and the conditions, and it doesn't seem to get much traffic on weekdays if I remember correctly. Let me know if you need anymore info, and thanks again for that great day on Indian Lake! Good luck!

Jared
