Being a native of the area, I can tell you, there are literally a million hotels, motels, B&B's, folks that rent out the homes and apartments on short term basis, all over this area during the summer. However, it's STILL nearly impossible to find somewhere to stay on short notice, especially during track season, when it's pretty much out of the question.
So, if you're coming to the area, (again, especially during August) then plan WAY ahead and reserve.
If you are having trouble finding a place, you can also look south or north by quite a way and not have that much of a drive. Everything (including Lake access) is right off I87, meaning you can be there in a few minutes. In fact, it's only about a 30 minute drive from Albany or LakeGeorge to the Lake.
Other towns you might want to search if you're having trouble finding a place to stay include Albany, Clifton Park, Latham, Glens Falls, Queensbury, Lake George (a bit of a drive), Malta. All over, it's one big tourist trap up here, so hotels and motels a-plenty...
