Well, it looks like there is at least one team in NY this winter that doesn't suck........let's see......Giant's...no, Jet's....nope,,,, Knicks.....uhh,uhh......Isles......riiiiiight.......................yes, it's the NY Rangers. I have waited a long time to say that they were actually a good team. Apparently, the rest of the NHL is now taking notice in their resurrgence.
Nassau -Rangers 4 Isles 2
Great first two periods for the Rangers last night. They came out strong and outplayed the hapless Isles. Better legs, better scoring chances. The Rangers took a 3-0 lead into the 3rd before they got too complacent and let the Isles creep to within a goal. Good poise and a few good plays by Leetch, Holik and Ruchinsky deflated the Isles with goal #4. Great win in thew Mausolium. Dunham looked great.
Now, I'm a huge time hockey fan and I've never complained about the officiating until now. In the last 10 games or so I've seen such poor officiating that it is laughable. Unlike football or basketball where the ref's do not sit on their whistles, Hockey calls have been inconsistent at best. They have introduced rules into the game to make it more free flowing. It seems that they are optional calls though......either call it consistenly or don't call it ever.
One rule I can't stand is the "Diving" rule.
A player embelishes and makes a spectacle of being pulled down can be given a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Now, lately I've seen this occur....player a gets called for a trip but the guy he trips gets called for a dive, on the same play....how does that happen? Either he was tripped or he wasn't. Call one or the other but you can call both it is a damn contradiction. I play Hockey. For some it is tough enough just to stand on skates, if you have a 200lb guy take your legs out....you fall......graceful or not.
Next rule Instigator for fighting. This rule is also given to freely. Unless it is cut and dry and a player goes out of his way to challenge a guy who otherwise wouldn't have been involved in a fight......you can't call it if they drop the gloves together.
Penalty shots.....if a guy is free and clear one on one with the goalie and get's denied a scoring chance due to an infraction occuring, by all means they should be awarded a penalty shot. No ref wants to allow it but it is in the books and you have to call it. I've seen guys get them who shouldn't have and guys who without a doubt deserved a shot be denied. The calling is so inconsistent I can't take it.......sorry Vicodin rant!
Now lets talk about the Islanders. The NY Mets of Hockey. This team has no identity. Yeah, you have Peca and Yashin but they are underachievers past their prime. Their is not a player on that team to be scared of. In the past it was Bossy, Trots, Gillies and Nystrom, now nobody is all too worried about them. Milbury is awful. He has traded or waived away all of the promising players. I couldn't believe the line up I saw last night. I think he realizes his days are numbered and he's trying to pull off some last ditch effort to save his job....firing him is long over due. Good job on his part waiving Jason Wiemer, the only sparkplug that was on the team. The rest of the team has answered with 8 straight losses. 9 goals in eight games and 30 against.
You had a good young team the last two years that made the playoff's with a spectacular defense....why go fire the coach who got you there? A player or two didn't like him......that's garbage. This new coach is awful.
Peca is a shell of the power forward they brought him in to be. I didn't agree with his kneeing call last night(look at me defending and Islander)...I thought it was incidental to the play and he didn't deserve the 5 minute major...but I'll take it as my Rangers cashed in two PPG's on it. Dipietro is not the future...the future is playing on the Florida Panthers right now....Luongo.
Even Don Maloney didn't sabotage this team like Milbury has. If you are an Isles fan, how can you stand this guy?
