Hi. I want to put a boat on the Ashokan and just wanted some advise on what type of chain and lock I should get. Any other advise would be appreciated since i've never done this before. I still have to call for an appt. to have it steam cleaned. Do you have a say in where you put it, or do they just tell you? Thanks. Rich

I think they only do appointments on Fridays, and they will give a list of open areas to choose from. If I were you, I would call and get the list of open boat areas and then go to Ashokan and check them out, before you settle on one.

It's pretty easy, like NYC mentioned above, get your apt set up ... they will clean the boat right there, put on their own DEP # , show you maps of open spots and show you how to get there. Just a length of chain/cable & a padlock. It's a smallie factory !!! Sometimes in the fall the water level can get pretty low.

Good luck.

curious on how it went..I am thinking of putting a boat up there too..
They did the steam/pressure clean, I filled out the application, and they drove me down to where I wanted to put the boat. It took about an hour total.
Since we were already there, we went out for a few hours. We had very good action, mostly smallmouth. I'm looking forward to exploring the place more !

Hi, sorry late to this thread, but I have a boat on the West Basin and used to fish the East Basin years ago when my Father had a boat on that side. Glad to hear you got it set up. Are you on the East or West basin? As already mentioned, lots of smallies. If you are interested in trout, there are some nice trout also, but they can be tricky and it's helpful if you have a fishfinder to find the depth that they are hanging out at. Also I know its late, but on the dep website, they have angler maps that show all of the storage locations (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/pdf/maps/angler/angler_maps.pdf). Anyway, if you are interested in targeting trout, I can probably help you out with some techniques that my father and I have learned over time...

I was actually thinking of heading up there tomorrow morning myself.

It is a huge lake to explore and I have typically fished for trout up there, but tomorrow wanted to explore a spot I haven't been to to see if I can find some LMB.

Good luck!

I'm in the east basin at the frying pan. As I get to know the place more I may move it. I put it there on a friends recommendation, and the fishing is good. It's just that there's only the peninsula, and then you are into "no fishing" zones on either side. You have to row to the other sideto gain good continual access. We'll see how things work out as I get more experience. I am looking into a portable depthfinder!
