I like Piazza very much. He needs help from pitchers holding the runners, developing pick-off moves, throwing behind runners, etc. 75% of the stolen bases are off the pitchers. The Mets blundered the situation w 1st base and Piazza made them look really bad. No team would expect their star player to change positions just prior to breaking a record such as the one Piazza will get soon.
Back to the orginal post Reyes was the answer at short and pursuing Matsui has to have shaken his confidence. Is the ankle ok? I also think they devalued him as trade material by so readily changing his position. If he does play second and has defensive problems it could affect his offensive game. Telling him he could move to 2nd puts the Mets in a bad way at the neogciating table and with the fans. If they don't get Matsui all of a sudden Reyes is still the answer at short. They are pursuing a free agent with a ready replacement. Wilpon..."well we didn't want to overpay for Matsui, but we still have Reyes."
Is Matsui price the most they are willing to spend on one guy? Does Wilpon follow trends(manager, young gm, lots of young, cheap players, focus on non-tendered players) instead of forging his own road? Looks to me like they don't have a cohesive plan and and they don't have a very sharp GM. It's easy to have a fire sale in July August, but building a team is different.
