Is Matsui the answer? The only good, young player the Mets have is Reyes and they are going to start jerking him around!!!! This after telling him he was the starting shortstop for the forseeable future. I'd change his postion or trade him IF I was getting A-rod or Nomar on a long term basis otherwise let him be. Johnny Franco one more year.....enough already .....he's almost 50.

Are you telling me the Yanks never break promises to their young players?

Think about all the youth they unloaded recently. I'll have to look into what is going on but you guys just gave up Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera and another player for Javier Vasquez. Who's going to play first? Please do not say Giambi.

It is possible that either Matsui or Reyes will be traded for A-Rod or a big gun.

I know, the move mystifies me........they blew the Castillo deal, like they always do.....

why not stick with homegrown material and keep Reyes at short....however, this last round of Japanese players have been excellent, so if they are raving about this guy he must be pretty good.......Alphonso was moved twice........sometimes its part of the game and for the better of the team...;

Atlanta has had their 3rd baseman out in left field the last two years, right?

There is no decent pitching to buy, otherwise the Yanks would overpay for it in a heartbeat. Milldew had his shot with the Mets and the other guy doesn't want to play here.

Giambi's d doesn't worry me as much as most...his knee yes that is a concern. Maybe with Donnie baseball in his ear day in and day out he'll get a few clues along the way. Tino sat in favor of Fielder and Tino was by far a better glove. NJ and JR for a frontline pitcher for possibly 5 or 6 years is just the price you have to pay. The Yanks to use your phrase "gave up" on 2 players, but only because nothing short of winning the World Series in 2004 will be considered a success.

Did anyone see Castillo swinging at those curveballs?

Paul, Vasquez lifetime is below .500. This guy is no savior, he could be another Weaver. Last year in inter league play he was 4-8, Yes the team is better, but your pitcher is the first line of defense. Not a great deal for you guys....If he wins 18 games, I'll swallow those words. Worry about Petitte. Why no move on Colon?

And although the Mets have been quiet...they will land a big fish.

Word is give Colon a long contract and he balloons to
260 lbs. Yankees were also concerned with his ability to
handle NY..........Yanks made some good moves, unlike Mets
who go after nobody..........even if they land a big star,
they will struggle to break even next year.........one player
doesn't make a team.........see Mike Piazza

this is the beginning of the downfall for the yanks. all these so called big guns are washed up. they're gonna suck.

it is fun to see the yankees spend so much and not win it all. with the money they spend and they're alleged stars, i'm surprised they don't win all 162 games every year.

Earthy,
Stop pickin on Giambi..he's not that bad a First baseman. Comparred to Mike Piazza...why he's a Golden Glover! LOL
Besides that..shouldn't you be busy making tubes instead of wasting time talking about base ball!

I like Piazza very much. He needs help from pitchers holding the runners, developing pick-off moves, throwing behind runners, etc. 75% of the stolen bases are off the pitchers. The Mets blundered the situation w 1st base and Piazza made them look really bad. No team would expect their star player to change positions just prior to breaking a record such as the one Piazza will get soon.

Back to the orginal post Reyes was the answer at short and pursuing Matsui has to have shaken his confidence. Is the ankle ok? I also think they devalued him as trade material by so readily changing his position. If he does play second and has defensive problems it could affect his offensive game. Telling him he could move to 2nd puts the Mets in a bad way at the neogciating table and with the fans. If they don't get Matsui all of a sudden Reyes is still the answer at short. They are pursuing a free agent with a ready replacement. Wilpon..."well we didn't want to overpay for Matsui, but we still have Reyes."

Is Matsui price the most they are willing to spend on one guy? Does Wilpon follow trends(manager, young gm, lots of young, cheap players, focus on non-tendered players) instead of forging his own road? Looks to me like they don't have a cohesive plan and and they don't have a very sharp GM. It's easy to have a fire sale in July August, but building a team is different.

Earthy....I couldn't agree more..........Yankee payroll is a
%$^# joke. I remember as a kid,looking through the
sporting magazines, wondering which "kid" on the farm
the Yankees would bring up to the big leagues.
No more............it's like shopping at Walmart .........

Players come and go,no loyalty from either side......greed rules.

I'm a baseball purist.......I HATE the DH......takes away the
"smallball" which I always enjoyed............

Sadly, this is the way baseball has evolved(?)
