Ok as a public service:

You can download your private messages in text or xml form and save them on your hard drive.

It's easy and doesn't change your PM box at all, so you can see how it works and experiment before making any changes.

At least on my computer there's a box below your last PM and above the page number box, this box says, "Selected Messages (0)"

1) check off certain messages,

2) click on this "Selected Messages (0)" box,

3) choose the action you want to take, (save as text probably),

4) hit the "Proceed..." button.

Your computer will open a "Save" box just as if you were downloading a program or anything else. Save it wherever you want. It's very readable in text form, but if you "save as text" and use a regular text or word processor program, then you can use the search function, (probably CTRL + F), which is better than looking through dozens of PMs one by one.

And again in 2015.

I bet this thread is still useful 100 years from now when our great great grandchildren's private message boxes are full!
