i have used a few. i own a magellan sportrak pro and a magellan 315.

the STPro is a mapping GPSr
the 315 is a waypoint only GPSr

My dad just got a Magellan Meridian and we are testing the features.

So far - i have forund the sportrak to be great, except for a problem they have with stress cracks by the case screws.

the 315 is a great little beast for refinding spots that you mark while fishing and hunting.

the meridian looks to be a winner. upgradeable memory by use of sd memory cards. holds a base map in flash rom and you load other maps via a cable from your computer. sounds harder than it is.

i have the ability to add maps to any magellan and can explain help to you.

i will add a few links in a bit to reviews and quarrels over gpsr. you should read as much as possible.

look for blister packs at price club / costco / smas that contain disks car charger case and all the other stuff.

back in a bit

joe mehaffys site is awesome... look it over.

also goto geocaching.com
goto the discussion forums and look under software and hardware.
same format as nybass.com
read, read and read.

look for info on 3 axis compass... meridian series has it in the platinum vesion.

look into rechargeable batteries as these units tear up batts. also look into aquasack or seal line bags to carry it in as they are not waterproof!!!!! NOT WATERPROOF!!! NOT WATERPROOF

,,,then is there an option you would not go without?,,,,explain if you please
tracking.
track lines and the ability to freely upload and download/ save them to computer for future use.

almost all GPSr (the r stands for reciever) can do this.. some better than others.

lets say you drive around a lake all day and go home. where was i?? well download the tracks and waypoints (saved points) and view them on a real map.. i use expert gps and get results like...

and these shots

i can't do without the ability to chart past movement now. i love being able to see on real maps, topos and arial shots. really gives a sense of where you were exactly. sometimes shoreline all looks the same.

more than happy to elaborate over phone or email.

Robbie,Thanks for all the info, lots of interesting stuff,If you don't mind I'll ask a few more questions here because it be be of interest to others, first, are those your honeyholes??(lol),The illustration that you posted,,from the sporttrak or 315? would it be possible for me to locate all of the property corners& waypoint them,,then the next week start at a corner & head to another with the tracking on? when I'm completed with the perimeter can I add landmarks (after getting their waypoints)within the property & then print it out,,,Do the units you've mentioned come with the necessary software or is it purchased seperately,,I'm assuming it's a topo. software,,and are they site specific maps or when you purchase the sw does it have the whole country in it's database,,Thanks again, great info,,Mark

Garmin eTrex

I float allot of rivers, and the eTrix will track my start time, average speed, and ETA to the take out.

Also, when your 50 feet from the take out (you store the takeout and putin coordinates before the trip), it starts beeping. Helps to locate the take out when you're in unfamiliar waters.

Awesome tool!

mark,
good questions.. looks like you are on the right track no pun intended.

first, are those your honeyholes??(lol),The illustration that you posted,,from the sporttrak or 315?
the numbers are from the stump project. i was looking for the structures. found them all by use of waypoints supplied by andrew, the us army, mark cappazola and others.
they are from the sportrak pro.

would it be possible for me to locate all of the property corners& waypoint them,,then the next week start at a corner & head to another with the tracking on? when I'm completed with the perimeter can I add landmarks (after getting their waypoints)within the property & then print it out
yes, yes and yes. i would look at the models of etrex that are readily hooked up to a computer, or magellans that easily hook to a computer. the meridians and higher end garmins will suit you fine.

i suggest a unit with upgradeable memory for map room on an sd card. they are a few more bucks but really well worth it. a magellan meridian gold goes for around 245$. accepts an sd card for expanded maps. some etrex do also. color screens are not necessary and they eat batteries up.

Do the units you've mentioned come with the necessary software or is it purchased seperately,,I'm assuming it's a topo. software
if you find a blister packed set that is great. accessories cost $$$. if you check the major sites you will find blister packed sets that include software and such. topo is an option, but not included.. unless you buy a package with topo included. i use the magellan base maps -- not too bad.. with detailed maps uploaded. i get incredible street detail. it is adjustable... as you can filter out roads at certain magnitudes.. or leave them on. it is a screen clutter thing ya know.

purchase the sw does it have the whole country in it's database
remember some GPSr are not mapping capable. they just show you waypoints on a blank screen with a few city names.
GPSr with basemaps are a better option in my opinion as you have a street reference that is invaluable. the software usually contains the whole US. garmin must use garmin SW, and Maggies use Magellen SW. no other options there. they are proprietary. that blows.

when you get close drop me an email and we will chat. i am involved in a few outdoor hobbies that use GPSr and i use it all the time. kind of hones the skills necessary to navigate.

don't discount the need to carry a small decent compass and whistle while out in the woods either!!

a GPSr is only as smart as the guy holding it. it will find YOU. you need to put points in Properly to help it help you find your way.

alot of GPSr have a feature called Anchor Alarm - to use it you set your start point and set a drift radius. i like to drift a spot on a lake a few times. i set it for about 100-150 feet. drift out and it will beep when i hit the radius. motor back to the point i started with the help of GPSr, and do it again.

Moon phase and fishing calculator are included in alot of GPSr too. kind of a frivilous tool but it's there.

goto features. if you mark a waypoint as a goto and switch to compass mode.. it will relate the point you are attempting to get to on the compass screen. follow a simple directional and it will usually tell you distance to, bearing, heading, speed, elevation etc. mine shows est time of arrival and updates for speed changes etc.

lots of goodies packed into these little creatures.
