Guys,

Ray and I (and maybe Mike) are heading out fishing SOMEWHERE this Saturday. We all agree that we are looking to go somewhere that will produce #'s of fish and tons of laughs if possible. Notice I said FISH, not specifically bass, although that would be our preference. Tony and I hit the Thames last weekend, but the fish havn't moved in yet - so that is out of the question. Then we thought the Hudson, but with the rain and high winds expected over the next few days, that is going to be pretty chocolatey so that is probably out too. Then we thought Whaley. That is still a possiblity.

Has anyone been to Whaley lately? Does anyone have any suggestions on a fun, #'s place within two hours of Mahopac? If all else fails, I'll fish Maho, but I REALLY dont want to. I'll have the Skeeter so we cant go to a car toper type of place, i.e. Rockland.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Pat

Pat: our last trip to Whaley produced 40 fish....and that was exceptionally slow for that water......Gregg had a banner day with two 3 pounders and 3 two and a half pounders, so size was even decent.

all quality fish came from deeper water.......

as fun a place as I know right now to fish......you have to Call Domenick in advance because normally he would not open the marina at this time of the year......

I know that you guys will do well there, because you both know how to fish deep and patient......

Andrew - your too kind. Unfortunately you have to look at the crew Im with that day. One, Mike Delvisco is nursing a bad injury on his leg/ankle and would not be comfortable in a jon boat. The other, Scul is just plain OLD! LOL - I love ya buddy (boy am I going to catch sh*# for that one)! Seriously, I dont think that Ray is going to be up to rowing on a res - but I could be wrong I suppose.

If something changes, I will definately take you up on your offer.

Thanks again Andrew - that was very nice of you!

Gang,

Well, Whaley it is. If someone what's to meet us there (unfortunately we are out of room on Tonys skeeter) I would love to make a fun day of it. If you want, we are going to be there about 9 or 10 am - once the frost melts, and will stay there for as long as the crew can take it.

Hope to se you NY Bassers there,

John - Tell me about what you guys did to get those 40 - location, baits, etc. Hope you dont mind - thanks in advance Doc.

Pat...I concur on Whaley

a great place for huge numbers of LMs, and of course Pickerel as well.
I have fished there a few times, always boating huge numbers on soft-plastics, especially cut-tails and senkos. The south and west shores have always produced better for me. The one island just south of the launch has also been sweet to us, as also has a hump just south-east of the island.
Domenick is very accomodating.....

Normally this time of year there is only one place I go and that is the Hudson.

I have been there the last 3 weeks in a row and the fishing should get better. Those heavy rains we had a couple of weeks back muddied things up pretty good.

I was reading you posts regarding Whaley and am curious. I have seen it mentioned before but have no idea where it is! I ran a search and only found one lake somewhere in Ontario. Too far to drive for a day and much too cold.:D

Can someone tell me what town and state this lake is in?? Is the lake limited to a certain horsepower? Does it have a ramp? Can you put a 20' boat on it? Any other particulars on the lake will be appreciated!!

Are the fish you catching SM's or LM's? When you say you are catching them deep....Do you mean spoonin deep 25+ or crank bait deep 10+??

as fun a place as I know right now to fish......you have to Call Domenick in advance because normally he would not open the marina at this time of the year......
I guess I need Domenick"s number too!!:)

Thank you in advance.

a numbers lake for sure

Skeet

Whaley Lake is a little more than 250 acres in size. No horsepower restrictions and no problem launching a 20' foot bass boat. Its located a few miles west of Lake Carmel in Putnam County. Lots of fish, no smallies however. Bite is good right now at 20+ feet.

Start with where, their all the deep part of the south end and deep to the south end of the east shore. We caught them mostly on tubes rigged on internal jigs, would think your fav jig&pig would work just as well. Hard jerks work so did cranks if you wanted one of those pickerels you like so much. Blasted a bunch at the end will a swim shad keep low in the water column.

Guys, thanks so much, but unless I missed it somewhere, I still need a phone number for the marina.

Please help.

Pat,

Ray told me to call him regarding directions to Whaley. If you call or email him, I am sure he would give you the number.:)

I (really my son) decided to go to the Hudson instead. I will not promise you 40 fish there but you will catch a bunch and some good ones. 5bass and his partner Joe had 7 fish over 23lbs last week in our tourney. I would expect it to be just as good this week.

What is nice is you don't have to fish 20' deep. Most can be caught with cranks and jig n pig.

Have fun which ever place you go.

We did have fun! Mike Del and I caught over 20 in 5 hrs, but two things shocked me the most. One, all the fish we caught we in 4-6ft of water! We caught them flipping tubes in the dying weeds! It was really fun. And two, we only caught 2 picks all day. For those of you who know this place, that is truely amazing. Although I have only fished this place twice now, I can tell you that the ratio's of picks to bass is probably 3 to 1. I couldn't keep them off last time I was there, and this time, only two all day.

Water temps we 41 and we caught all of our fish on green and pumkin tubes, rigged TX style with a 3/8 weight pegged.

Great time - thanks to all of you who helped get me there this week - ESPECIALLY my buddy Ray who stayed on the cell with me since I left the instructions in my office! Thanks again Raymond.
