Now that the successful Lake Hopatcong Challenge is history, we look forward to our competitive annual fall event, the Bassin' Lane Open. Staged on the Mohawk at Schoharie on November 3rd, the team entry fee is $160 per boat (one or two anglers per boat). We fish for 5 bass and the hours are from 7AM to 3PM. Although the Mohawk at Schoharie water level, due to repairs, is low, we are assured that it will be at full pool by mid October. There is no advance registration by mail. We will however be taking "day in advance" registrations at the Valley View Motel Saturday afternoon between 4:30 and 6PM. Otherwise, register Sunday morning at 5AM to 7AM. You will receive your boat number as you register. Boat number one with lodging, donated by the Bergen Bassmasters, was auctioned off by Bill Decoteau to all in attendance at the Lake Hopatcong Challenge - 100% of the auction proceeds went to the USO. You can pull down a copy of our Bassin' Lane Open application from the Bergen Bassmaster website. For a $60 flat room rate (includes all taxes), call the Valley View Motel and say that you are fishing the Bergen tournament, the number is 518-842-5637. One more note: Mohawk at Schoharie launch fees have been waived for the rest of the year - no need to drop any cash in the box.

Update: The lock repair situation is tenuous and although they are filling up the canal this weekend for boat navigation, it will be dropped again for two to three weeks. Permanent repairs are to take place in this time span, then they expect to fill it up again for final 2013 boat navigation. We should be good to go for 11/3 but you never know. The Bassin' Lane Open may be moved to St. Johnsville, Crescent Pool or the Hudson. Stay Tuned.

That ... sucks ... and is really going to screw things up for a bunch of fun tournaments (MVAC 10/13 & NETB 10/20 among others). Hopefully the repairs go better than expected and they can get those pools up quick. That's the only place I care to be this time of year. Hudson? Never. Don't care what size bags are brought to the scale. Helped run the Rip Van Winkle Open for years and fished during it ... and never had a good day. Damn Crudson.

UPDATE: Bassin' Lane Open

Hello Everyone,
Our annual Mohawk River Open, the Bassin’ Lane Open, is still on track at Schoharie Crossing for Sunday 11/3. Although Tom the Lock Supervisor has assured me that the water level will be up by 11/1 (he called it right last year), we have a back-up plan. If the lock repairs are not on track and the water level is too low for launching, we will conduct the tournament from the St. Johnsville Marina. No matter what, the Bassin’ Lane Open is a go. The entry fee is $160 per boat (fish alone or with a buddy) and the limit is 5 bass per boat. There is no advance registration by mail but you can sign up at the Valley View Motel on Saturday, 5 to 6PM, or at the launch from 5:15 to 6:30AM. Tournament hours are 7AM to 3PM. Boat numbers are assigned as you register Sat. or Sun. You can print out our application/waiver and fill it out in advance. Boater’s need to exhibit a copy of their boat insurance. The Valley View Motel is offering a flat $60 rate (includes all taxes) but you need to mention that you are fishing in the Bergen Bassmasters tournament. For reservations, call them on 518-842-5637.
Questions? Send me a PM
Final site will be posted on our website by 10/31
Thank you,

FINAL UPDATE - Bassin' Lane Open

Hello Friends,
Our annual Mohawk River Open, the Bassin’ Lane Open will be staged out of the St. Johnsville Marina, Sunday 11/3. Reason: Tom the Lock Supervisor, as of today, has doubts that the Schoharie section will be ready for navigation by 11/2. He suggests that we use the St Johnsville Marina section (between locks 15 and 16). You can lock through to one section to the east, or all you want to the west.

Questions? Call Nick on 917-217-9350 or John on 201-954-3996
Directions: Take exit 29 off the NY Thruway and get on route 5S west for ¼ mile, make a right at route 10 and proceed over the bridge. After going over the bridge, make a left on route 5 and proceed to St. Johnsville (around 7 miles). Make a left at sign for Marina. Proceed ¼ mile and make a left on Marina Drive. The address is 16 Marina Drive, St. Johnsville NY 13452 (518-568-7406). The launch fee is $2.00.

Locks look Tom gave you good info and you made the right decision Nick:

Notice to Mariners

ERIE CANAL/ MOHAWK RIVER

October 28, 2013

Mariners are advised that necessary repairs to the movable dam at Lock E-13 on the Erie Canal are projected to be completed on Saturday, November 9. At that time, water levels will be returned to normal, with this section of the Canal re-opening on or before 7:00 am on Tuesday, November 12. This section of the Canal System, in addition to the entire Oswego Canal and the eastern Erie Canal from Lock E-23 in Brewerton to Lock E-2 in Waterford, will remain open until 5:00 pm on Monday, December 2 – though all locks will be closed during the day on Thursday, November 28th. All other sections of the Canal System, including the Champlain Canal, Cayuga-Seneca Canal, and Erie Canal from Lock E-24 to Tonawanda, will close for the season at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 15.

The above schedule may be impacted by weather, and is dependent on continued progress on site, successful restoration of normal navigation levels, the confirmation of the stability of the dam at Lock E-13, and that our recreational and commercial customers can transit this location safely and reliably.

For updates and information monitor 1-800-4CANAL4 and www.canals.ny.gov.

Good luck to everyone fishing this weekend.

Number of Teams unknown - advance registrations not accepted - sign up on Saturday at Valley View or at the Ramp on Sunday as explained above. $160 per boat with 80% payback. Boat insurance proof is mandatory - no exceptions. Expected turnout 15 to 30 boats (depends on weather - and it looks to be decent with no rain/snow and high in 40/50's).

Bassin' Lane Open - Results

Bassin’ Lane Open
Ten HEARTY teams made it to St. Johnsville to fish in Bergen’s Bassin’ Lane Open on 11/3/13. As the Mohawk at Schoharie section was closed due to lock repairs, St. Johnsville was a back-up site. Not only was the river moving at an awesome speed, but a nasty cold north wind was blowing in the same direction. In trying to work against the current and wind, my two big Optima batteries were dead by 1PM. Air temp hovered at around 40 and the water temp was 48. Fortunately we had two things going for us, rainfall ended by 7AM and the bass fishing was great. Doug and I caught around 20 keeper size bass and culled out a nice limit close to 14 pounds. We assumed that we did well enough to place but after a few other teams weighed in, we knew that we were out of the money. Most everyone had 5 bass limits and I am talking about some “Schoharie Size Smallies.” We thank all of the gentlemen anglers, who under adverse weather conditions (and long driving trips), made it to this tournament. Next year, we are set for Sunday November 2nd 2014 on the Mohawk at Schoharie. We have the site booked and God willing, the Schoharie section will be at full pool.
Results (all smallmouth bass):
1. *Johnny “Bearpaws” Olsen and Brian Gudd 16.36
2. Gary and Greg Menchen 15.43
3. Rich Agostinoni and Dave Blumberg 14.71
4. Aaron Stone and Bo DeMarco 14.27
5. Nick Albano and Doug Giachino 13.79
6. Scott Shrader and Al Foley 13.32
7. John Ernest and John Hayden 11.23
8. Forest Honeywell and Bob Gilbert 9.53
9. Dennis Foley and Brian Ghang 7.19
10. Bobby Williams and Jim Picumas 5.33
*Lunker 3.87

Congrats to the winners and good to see the Menchen boys came out and scored 2nd.

Thanks for the advance warning on next year's date Nick. I'll be back next year ... Schoharie pool conditions permitting.

As always, a great run tournament Nicky. Fishing was very good in spite of adverse conditions. Congrats to Watershed Bassmasters Bryan Gudd along with Johnny Olsen for their 1st place finish and thanks to my boy for finding us the good ones.
