Fished Niagara River and the Nia Bar April 14 & 15.
Fri - Fished the Bar all morning and then a couple hours on the lower river drifts in the afternoon. No action on the river. Went 3 for 4 on lakers with largest 12 and 17.25 lbs on Kwik Fish off 3 ways. Also, caught an 8 lb and lost another near the net in that size range. Lake temps 40 – 42 degrees. Air temps to 63 degrees. Sunny most the day with calm to 10 mph wind out of the NE. Things shut down completely in the afternoon. Most were caught between 9:30 - 10:30 am.
Sat – Fished river from 7 am – 1:30 pm. Caught 4 steelies to 9 lbs plus and lost 3 on egg sacks off 3 ways in the morning (1st 4 or 5 drifts) Only a couple of bites rest of the day. Sunny until about 11 am then rainy and cold rest of the day. Air temps to 60 degrees. Water was clear. This was not our typical Niagara River trip. We usually average 10 -20 steelies per day this time of year. Spoke to several of the veteran guides and they claim that numbers and quality have been down this year on the river. Good news is that the eastern part of LO is on fire with numbers of HUGE lake trout and browns!
My friend took big fish honors with a nice 17 lb laker.
