So this is going to be a fish story. Decided to hit Candlewood tonight and the algae bloom was horrible. Pea soup! Hit the cove for awhile and then headed out into the lake to get scolded by a bass boater about being crazy for being on a kayak. This is only my second time there and last time I fished there were ice flows, but the lake was down about 10 feet so I had scouted some structure. I had only one hit in an hour and wasn't feeling all that positive, but happy to be on the water.
Then it happened. I was casting to a rocky bank from about 30 ft out and about 5 feet from the boat the rod doubled over. I'm fishing 40# braid without a leader with a Winco Custom spinner bait, so I didn't hesitate beating the hell out of the fish. I had her by the boat in a second, but she wasn't happy. Unfortunately someone stole my net last week when I was trout fishing in VA so I was trying to lip her. Had her for a second and then she was gone. One, I have never seen a smallie this big. I catch a bunch of citation SM in PA every season. This thing was a freak. I really think it would have beaten the CT state record. What the hell can you do? I was only mad for a second. Getting to see a fish that big was just amazing. My heart was pounding and I was shaking. Then I just smiled because I realize this is just what happens when you fish.
Fish out in the lake for about another hour and then decided it was best to head back across the lake and into the cove before dark. Made my way back to where I had my fist bite on a brush pile and dropped a swim jig into it. Felt that little thump and set the hook. Nice 4# LM but a little of an unhealthy specimen. A few minutes later connected with an even bigger girl only to loose her on the first jump. Then I get a hit on my spinner and a nice little smallie jumps. I watch the spinner fly out in mid air and see it and the fish hit the water. Wait! the line is still tight. It wrapped the line around it and the spinner hooked it in the outside of the jaw.
I got a few more after dark. but no more big girls. I'm planning on going back next week. Hoping the bloom is gone and the feed bags are on.
