You'll want to have this thread moved to the appropriate forum, but until then...

I believe you only have to register a boat if you use a motor. Once it has a motor on it (electric or gas) it becomes a motor vehicle and the DMV wants their cut. If it's just oars, no need.

It really depends upon the water.

Some waters are owned by counties, some by towns, some by state, some by private home-owner associations, etc.

You need to find about who OWNS and REGULATES the water to see if any permits are required for use and boating there.

Mark is correct that you need to register any boat with the DMV if you use a motor of ANY type on it.

    All good info up there!!!

DMV states that a Motor Vehicle is described as something that is powered by OTHER THAN human means AND does not run on rails.
If it doesnt have wheels, swim, or run naked in the woods, I dont know anything about it !!

Best is to call your local DMV office ahead of timeto verify what you'll be required to have.

Usually, you need a bill of sale or reciept from when you bought it.
You may also be required to take a pencil-rubbing of the serial number of the boat's hull indentification plate also.

Once you register a boat, it then requires a lot of equipment to be onboard [check regs for that list], and the boat also then needs to have marking numbers put on each side of the front of the vessel. The registration sticker than gets placed next to those numbers on each side.
