Salty is David's best friend..
..and David owes his life to her.
I know I have mentioned to some of you , and in some posts over the years, that I have been getting introduced to sailing on the Great South Bay.
One of the guys that really has been showing me the ropes, is named David
David is a buddy of mine that is an avid and extremely proficient sailboat captain that has little Salty,a wire-haired terrier following him around, like David's fur-covered shadow always.
Salty is truly loyal and well trained dog, and David's constant companion..
David has many hobbies besides boating, and he is quite a very, very talented finish carpenter, often fabricating very diverse wooden pieces for other members yachts kept at the marina he keeps his Hunter moored in. He not only makes replacement pieces for repair jobs of many yachts, as well as fabricating wood decorative chests and the sort. He loves making custom pieces.
David rents a workshop close to his boat's marina , where he keeps his table saw, lathe, etc and uses as his warehouse, to do his woodworking in.
That shop is heated only when David is working there by a big wood burning stoveh he alone uses. It is pretty centrally positioned in the shop that is sightly larger than a double car garage .
He had sucessfully retired from his regular career a long time ago, and now just sails, or tinkers and does the the sort of things mentioned above keep himself amused during his days, while his younger wife still works in her jewelry career, located in Manhattan.
Well, last week, David had gone to the workshop early one week day alone while his wife was in NYC, fired up the wood-burning stove, and got into working on his wood project for that day.
Not knowing it then, he was succumbing slowly to carbon dioxide from the wood-burning stove, because birds had built a nest in part of his chimney cover , apparently since the last time he had been there. As he worked, he noticed he was starting to get a headache, so he took some Tylenol for that, dismissed it asa headache, and kept on working on his wood project that day.
David was going to be going to visit some other freinds that night. because of that, he decided to take a quick nap there in a stored reclining chair, since he had the headache and was feeling tired, knowing he had a late night surely with the friends.
David went into a deep sleep at the shop, but had set his cell phone alarm clock to wake him up in time to meet the friends in plenty if time for a good nap, or so he thought.
David was awoken from a deep sleep by Salty BITING him on his foot, and apparently trying to drag David repeatedly. He then realized he was not feeling right at all, put two and two together, and realized the dog just saved his life from the poisoning effects of carbon monoxie, as he scooped Salty up and ran outside to fresh air.
He then saw his doctor. Luckily, the doctor he went to was NOT the coroner.
Salty has never bitten David before that, or since.
Freaking birds, and some dog !!
True story....just happened about ten days ago here on Long Island.
He's lucky to be alive !!
