Atlantic Bassmasters "HALLOWEEN FALL CLASSIC" results. Lake Mahopac 10/26/02

At 5am the contestants began to arrive. The wind was blowing at 20 to 25 miles per-hour and the rain was steady and nearly vertical. I turned to my partner and said "man we have to be nuts," lets cancel the tournament and re-schedule. We decided to wait a bit longer before pulling the plug. "Lets see how many other nuts show up" he laughed. In retrospect it was good that we had waited. By 7 am, both the wind and the rain had stopped. The lake was like glass.

This tournament, The Atlantic Bassmasters HALLOWEEN FALL CLASSIC draws many of the areas top fisherman and todays event would be no exception. Conditions, both weather and seasonal were factors that had to be taken into their overall game plans. For many fishing on this day would not be easy. This event is limited to 20 boats and gaining entry into this event has become diffcult due to that constraint.

Congratulations to Pat Xiques (Yamamoto Pro-Staff) and Mike DelVisco (B.A.S.S. Pro) who won the event with a mixed limit (5 fish) weighing 15.14 pounds. This was the second year in a row that they have won this tournament and it was Pats third year in a row in the winners circle.

Second place went to the team of Danny Morgan (2003 New York State Team) and Mike Shea who weighed in a limit totaling 14.13 pounds.

Third Place went to LeRoy Bailey Jr. (B.A.S.S pro and 2003 Classic Qualifier) and Dewey Muir. Their five fish limit weighed 14.03 pounds.

Fourth Place went to Ray Scully and Kevin Cunningham (Atlantic Bassmasters Angler of The Year). Their five fish limit weighed 11.14 pounds.

Fifth Place went to Nick Albano and Craig Mitchell (Watershed Bassmasters Angler of The Year). They weighed in 4 bass for a 10.05 pound total weight.

Thanks for putting up the report, Scully. Excellent.

Congratulations to Pat and Mike! Nice, clear cut win, fellas.

I am seriously wondering how many, if all, of the Xiques/Del Visco fish were SMALLIES, which are the hidden jewels of Maho. I hope someone can answer this question. Pat? Mike?

Tight Lines...

a mixed bag

Rob

Pat and Mike had 2 largemouth and 3 smallmouth. Their largest smallmouth was their lunker, a 3 pound 9 ounce fish and their top largemouth weighed 3 pound 8 ounces.

Their were 8 smallmouth over three pounds weighed in and 7 largemouth.

Woody,

Pat and Mike were doing any number of deep water techniques. I will let Pat fill everyone in.

Second place and Fifth place teams were crankbaiting the 8 to 15 foot range.

Third and Fourth place teams caught their fish shallow on jig & pig and hair jigs.

Nice work Pat & Mike!!!

We caugth 2 fish all day both shallow on a tube. One was short, one was about a pound and a half. Didn't figure it was worth weighing in........We were right LOL

We tried a considerable amount of deep water jiggin but not knowing where exactly we should be doing it provided for lack of confidence and hence a poor showing....Some day I'm gonna get that lake figured out. In hindsight, we probably should of went shallow and worked with what we knew how to do.

Cudos to Ray and crew for a nicely run tourney....Good job

Well it's not quite a new member just a name change (previously mikeyd). Had to create a new user name. It feels good to get out and fish again, only fished a couple times since July (and yes Mike it was from the seated position).

Pat X started us out with a bang catching the first 5 fish. I was equipment manager in the back seat net in one hand culling scale in the other. That first flury ended in about 30 minutes and we had a limit by about 8.30. I think the passing front turned those fish on for a short time and Pat was able to capitalize on it. Those fish in comparison to the ones we usually catch were relitively shallow (12 feet) and when the flury ended we went to our deeper milk run.

We fished any where from 28 to 42 feet with a 3/4 oz black bucktail jig dressed with a Yamamoto series 3 craw (bigger one) and also caught a few on a hopkins spoon when the conditions permitted. BTW Pat somehow fiqured out the 3/4 oz. bucktail jig deal.

Slowly we culled fish by fish and at one time had over 15 pounds of smallmouth in the well during the day. We ended up culling one of those smallmouth with a bigger largemouth and weighed 4 SM and 1 LG in the final bag.

I am sure Pat will have some more so that's it for now. Great job to all that helped make this a great tourney. Great job to Scully for another class event and thanks to Pat for carting me around in and out of the boat to fish for the day.

Thanks for everyones kind words. Big time thanks to Ray and Atlantic Bassmasters for putting together such a well run event.

It actually was a great day for us. We landed 17 fish - 15smbs and 2 fatheads. We were shocked that none of the big girls showed up - 4lbs and up. Ray and I were talking about it tonight. 36 guys fished and there wasn't one 4 lb fish caught. Weird? On Wednesday I was practicing and caught an 18lb bag of smallies that I showed to Ray (released at the dock). A couple in the high fours and a few others mixed in - nice bag. I figured for sure they would show up again, but thats fishin I suppose. Mike and i went out today, and within two hours we had 3 over four right there in the same spots. TX fishin can make you NUTS!

Most of our fish came from deeper waters - anywhere from 25 to 45 ft. Most on a 3/4 black bucktail with a black and blue yammi craw on the back. I had some fish in practice on a big white bucktail (2oz) with a white grub on the back swam through the water column. Its something that I used to do for stripers, so why not big smallies. That pattern did not produce that day as well - but it does work here. I needed the big weight (2 oz jig) so that I can count it down and swim it in 40-50 ft. Again - nothing on it yesterday.

For the most part, most of the fish came in the first half of the day (shallower of course), but we did manage to pick away at them through out the day, allowing us to cull. Mike is a master at that. We fish incredibly well together. I cant imagine having another TX partner. He even knows my twisted TX mind. He told me yesterday that he say Ray and a few other guys who were fishing shallow catching, but decided to never tell me until after the event because he knew it would screw me up - making me think that some fish came up shallow - making me doubt my gameplan. He's the best!

Again, thanks first to Mike, who learned this body of water with me (God I hope this guy never fishes against me - lol) and developed a lot of these deep water right there on the front deck with me. Second to Ray who puts up with 36 wacky bass fisherman and still manages to pull off a quality event - EVERY YEAR! Congrats to all who were there.

See ya next year - reguardless of where this event is!

Pat

It is the classic deal of a pattern within a pattern. Yes we are fishing deep, yes people know how we are catching them, but it is more specifically where the fish are positioned on the area. Pat and I are still learning and get baffled often. One of the tournaments we won last year prior to the event had no idea how to catch them

The stuff Pat and I are fishing is very subtle and takes so much time to fish effectively. This is exactly why we do not want to fish shallow.
