Used Jon Boat from Jack Stewart
Im picking up a used boat
from Jack Stewart. This boat did have a leak in it. Should I stay away from
it?? Or does it not matter. Since, it will be inspected tomorrow.
BTW: Im putting it on Kensico..most likely mooring area #8.
Any feedback would be great!!

Bought one from him
Leaked since the day I
got it. Not so bad in the summer. But it sucks in the colder weather!

The DEP will steam clean it so there is no spread of zebra mussels, they don't check for leaks! How big was the leak? how does the repair look? WILL IT STAND UP TO A STEAM CLEANING? And are you willing to deal with it if it does leak again. These are the things you have to ask yourself.

Hi Vic,
Keep us posted on what you buy (details) and how much you spend. This process
of what to get, how much to spend, how to get the boat on the water, etc, is
still a mysery for some posters (myself included) and your efforts will/would
go a long way and be greatly welcomed.
Looking forward to hearing about your purchase. Take a pic if you have a
digital camera.
Thanks.

Thanks. What size are you
looking? Is it flat or v hull? How much are these things? I've heard Jack is a
bit of a curmudgeon. Have you been to any other dealers?
Thanks for sharing.

At the end of this season
i will be selling one or maybe two of my boats...They are both narrow
jonboats...One is a Grumman and the other that I might sell is a Landau
1244...Not sure on a price yet, but as I said, after this season...
As far as leaks go, if it was an easy leak to fix, that "shister"
would have fixed it...My experience with leaks is that they never go away
permanently...The only leak solution i have seen with any merits for a
permanent fix is welding...With the "Alumiweld" rods, you can weld
shut any hole using a regular propane torch....They wont solve a loose rivet
issue though, and unfortunately, thats what most leaks are caused
by...Hammering them with two hammers or a body and fender anvil will work as a
temporary fix, but it won't last...
If the boat leaks, dont buy it...Split the cost of a new boat if you have to
and share it...

Hi Wandy,
If you have not dealt with him personally yet you will be in for an experience.
I find him comical. Jack is difficult to deal with especially if you have
questions. He will insist on selling you a boat over the phone without you
seeing it. He says he does it all of the time. Then tell when you tell him
where you want your boat he trys to convince you to put it somewhere else. He
told a friend of mine to put it on Amawalk. I nearly fell over. You may not
know but I am the AMAWALK SKUNK.
But he is realiable and been around for a while. If you know what you want and
have your set price range, you will be ok.
About two weeks ago I had a boat moved from Amawalk to the DEP Site and then to
Kensico. This cost me $75 bucks (even though I had to help the guy move the
boat from the woods and back). I just couldnt see the guy doing it by himself.
In retrospect I could have easily done it with my girlfriend. Oh well. Live and
learn.
He had a 14' used jon boat that was going for $480. A few days ago Vic aka Bass
Hawg got a quote for a 14' used jon boat for $625. Is it the same boat?? Dont
know. From what I have read flat bottoms are the best for shallow water next in
line will be semi v's. Its easier for two people to stand in a flat bottom
boat. That's my experience (as little is I have
).
Havent dealt with anyone else. I hear at the end of the season is the best time
to buy a boat so keep you eyes open. As long as you have a car most can be
carried on top or put in back of a van (as Jack's guy did) and haul it away.
A bunch of the guys from the site should get together and chip in and buy some
community NYBass' boats! Of course organizing it would be the task! I'll chip
in to put a boat on a different reservior.
Sorry I babbled my ass off. Really bored at work.
Vic,
Havent heard from you? Email me!

Felix: we have had
discussions on shared boats before on here and I have never seen a definitive
answer about the DEP stance on that......
perhaps if I email them I can get something in writing.....
one thing I will say in Jack's behalf:
he does give a complete service.....if you go to him, he will fill out the
papers to get the boat registered with NYState if you want to use it with a
trolling motor other than the reservoir....he will sell you the oars, the chain
, the lock, make the appointment for you and then take it to the steam cleaning
and then bring it to your site......if you buy a boat from him, it is case
closed......expensive, but case closed.....

John's right. He does
provide the complete deal.
If you don't have a way to transport the boat you'll need someone to do it.
Jack does provide that.
As far as buying a boat with a questionable leak. I think this way...all boats
will eventually leak why have that headache right away? If you can wait and
purchase a new boat. Or like it was said earlier look for someone to partner
with. I did that years ago with couple of friends in high school.
And as far as the money goes...think of it as a lifetime purchase...a little
more spent now should last you a long time.
For what it's worth.

used boat
Great thread. A lot
people do not have a way to transport a boat, such as the city slickers like
me, so knowing that Jack Stewart does a soup to nuts operation is great. Would
i like to save a few bucks. Sure. But again, like has been stated, down the
road the initial leakfree benefits outway the small savings.
I wonder if new boats would go on sale at end or season or just wait till next
season if the prices are the same so it does not have to sit out in the
elements.
Which hulls do better in the wind? Also, is there an easy way to deal with
anchoring? Like some kind of pulley system or catch/release system rather than
tossing it overboard?
Hope these questions are not too simplistic.

Shared Boats
The DEP does not allow
shared ownership, only one name on the permit BUT They do allow you to
use someone elses boat all you need is a copy of their permit.
The idea of community boats has come up before I'm sure you would have alot of
people interested but no one has jump to take the reins and work it all out.
John G and I are looking for a WIDE jon to put on Kensico for next year, if
anyone know someone who is selling one.

I picked up a brand new jon boat yesterday. I have an appointment around 8.30 am at the DEP on Rt. 6. Ill fill you guys in with more details after the weekend. Hopefully, with some pictures of the new boat.

OK, here's my 2
cents......
I've owned every type of boat on the reservoirs for the past 20 years and this
is what I've learned:
Stay away from boats that have the seats attached (riveted) to the bottom of
the hull !!! These are a recipe for disaster as I can guarantee you they will
start to leak in a couple of years. This applies to certain jon boats....all semi-v's
have "floating" seats that are attached to the sides.
Here's the problem: while standing in the boat, your weight applies stress to
the rivets that are attached between the bottom of the seat and the hull. Over
time, the rivets become loose and begin to leak because the bottom of the seat
starts to separate from the hull.
Boats with "floating" seats don't have that problem because the hull
will "flex" as you stand, absorbing your weight.
While on the subject of leaks, pick up some quickaluminum, this stuff is
cheap and amazing !!! It consists of an aluminum reinforced epoxy putty. It's
easy to apply and when it dries it becomes rock solid, it will seal any leak
!!! Check it out at www.polymericsystems.com
The type of boat you choose is a personal preference. I only use semi-v's
because they handle much better, especially in the wind. On the other hand,
wide jon boats are more roomy and better suited for standing but will tear your
arms off trying to row against a stiff wind.
Also, I handle my boats with care, I avoid dragging them over rocks or any
other rough surface. As a result, none of my boats leak and two of them are 10
years old !

semi-v's
Hey Ronnie,
Just wondering which semi-v models you use on the reservoirs? How long? What
make? How much are they? (new/used)
I only keep asking questions so when i go shopping i am somewhat informed
instead of somewhat clueless. They are not too far apart.

Ronnie that great info
about the seats, your right about the semi-v handling better but I'll take the
wide jon for the stability when 2 guys are standing, as for being harder to row
that's easy.....I just let John row ![]()

Wandy,
I currently have a 14' Monarch, 12' Starcraft and 12' Gamefisher. They're all
great and have been very dependable (no leaks).
Purchase price (new) starts at $1100.00 for a 12' depending on the manufacturer
and (used) is usually from $600 and up depending on the age and condition.
Keep in mind that semi-v's are more expensive, normally you can pick up a jon
boat for much less.
Ronnie
