Some variables come into
play here. In the ole tournament days, I would respool every reel just before
the next event. Nowadays, I respool about once a month, whether it really needs
it or not. If I hang-up a jig several times in a day, or have a spinning reel
"boing-boing", then I will respool the reel that evening or the next
day.
I never leave my bulk spools in a hot, dry area. I normally keep them in a
cabinet in my air-conditioned den. When I move to Florida, I will probably keep them in an
old refrigerator. I also store my rods and reels in the den and NEVER leave
them in the Jimmy, in the hot garage or in the boat, when not in use.
If I am seeking a new line class "record", I will respool EVERY time
I go out.
The line you use is the "cheapest" and most "important"
component of your fishing arsenal. Change it often and take good care of it.

After each trip.
Stripping line off a reel and using whats underneath is not a good practice.
Remember that the gear ratio on your fishing reel is based upon a FULL spool.
If you take line away, you are taking away your reels capability to perform at
its best.
RE-SPOOL!

I have to correct you Charlie,
The GEAR ratio = revolutions of the spool to turns of the handle.
What you aretalking about is ratio of retrieve, wich in your post would be
true.
Sorry my friend.

Hey Sean!
I think we have crossed lines/wires here.
If I turn a fully loaded spool of line on a 6.3: 1 reel, I expect to get (for
the sake of arguement) an estimated 12 inches of line per turn of the handle.
If I have a half empty (or half full) spool of line on the same reel and turn
the handle once, I would only expect to gain 10 inches or less. As the line
supply deminishes, the ratio of line regained upon retrieval would drop
dramatically. This can have an adverse effect of the candecy of a crankbait or spinnerbait.
That is what I was trying to explain, I guess BASS RAT is right, I am a damn
Aussie!! LOL

CHARLIE
I think a 6.3:1 ratio wil spool about 21 inches per revolution of the handle,
give or take and inch !

Im with Charlie on this one, I keep the reels up to full capacity, I may not strip ALL the line, but enough so I can do a blood knot and add fresh line back up to capacity.... I will do this virtually every trip out..... JOHN G

I must be one of those
odd "freaks" that doesn't seem to have much trouble with line, no
matter what kind I use.
I voted for the "Twice A Year" option. Of course this is an average
for me. Some rods keep the same line on them all year (one's I don't use frequently)
and others I may change once a month. I literally get down right to where I
spool myself while casting on some reels before I change, this being mainly
spinning reels.
I do retie often though, although probably not as much as I should.
John, this shouldn't surprise you, with me being a cheapskate and all ![]()
LOL I'll never let you
forget that one!

I change line 2 or 3 times a year. If i have frequent line breaks or losing alot of fish then I'll change it more often.

I usually respool just before i am going to go on a big trip, but i don't have a problem with leaving line on for a month a so, it usually hold up with no problem.

horizontal and vertical
horizontal presentations
like spinnerbaits abd crankbaits, Ill change lines every month or so. For vertical presentations like
pitching jigs , tubes and worms, Ill change line everytime I go out....

I'm with you Noel.
I respool everything at the beginning of the year and I'm good for the season.
Of the 5 or 6 setups I use the most, I might respool one or two if I lose some
line.
Then again I spend most my time pulling smallmouths out of Ontario where there's nothing to cause
wear and tear on my line, unlike pulling largemouths out from behind tree
stumps.

Change line???.... hmmm.... most of my Fireline has been on the reel for three years or so. It's still doing fine so I guess I'll keep casting it. Steve_IA

i retie whenever the line

Tony on Ice....correct, it could be up to about 23 to 25 inches. Charlie, I'm not following you here. The spool be less full would decrease the line take per revolution?? I think the reels gearing determines the amount of line it is capable of picking up as you crank. I can't see why it would vary at all. Maybe I'm not getting your point....anyone else see it??? I agree that I get the best overall performance from my line/reel with a full spool. With the decrease of spool diameter, less line will be taken in as you retrieve???? Charlie is that what you mean???

Craig,
Increasing the amount of line on the spool also increases the diameter of the
spool, which in turn makes for more line per "wrap". So if the spool
is turning at a constant speed, but the diamter increases, the line intake will
also increase. And visa-versa.
This will be more dramatic on large capacity deep spools, but shallow spools
you wouldn't notice much of a difference.

A 1/4 inch reduction from a shallow spool will have the same reduction of line recovery as a 1/4 inch reduction from a deep spool... provided the original outside line circumferences were the same.

respool?
I cant remember the last
time I "respolled" due to NEEDING TO.
Normally I do so much cutting and tieing that I put new line on due to LACK OF
LINE not needing too because of wear or other line problems
Braids and mono, both the same. Shallow spools help here too, this prevents
waste.

Steve, I agree with what
you said 100%.
My point was that you may not be able to really detect a difference in
performance with just a 1/4 inch diameter change (though there will be
difference) as compared to a 1/2 inch difference with a spool capable of
holding that much line.
