Jigs, and tackle box on a diet....
So the new season is kicking off in a hurry.
You go out to the garage and take out the overstuffed and messy box. jigs and plastics everywhere.
what colors and sizes are your staples for jig fishing? what are your seldom used colors? is anyone fond of particular size, weight, head, skirt material or hooks? just looking at a box, and it struck me to organize a little more.

Robbie, you knew I would answer....for largemouth 1/16oz, 1/8oz,1/4oz...blk/blue/purple, blk/blue, Metallic blue/purple, dark brown, watermelon, pumpkin/chart, green pumpkin. Those are my staples. I carry those colors everywhere. Now for a few specialties......Redshad, Green crystal shiner, white, laminated blk/blue, olive. The following colors I no longer carry.....pumpkin green flake, copper, solid black.
For smallies 1/16oz and 1/8oz.....pumpkin, brown, olive, firetiger, raspberry, redshad, amber, green pumpkin. Those are the only ones I've ever carried in my smallie bag.
I only use bioflex silicone, I feel it is the best out there and I love the Mustad blk nkl ultrapoints...to me the are like gammies in every way except price. Heads, I vary as I use weedless ball, grasshead, flipping head or football head. I just got into a load of 1/16oz football head jigs that I think will be awesome.

I will challenge ANY jig fisherman: you use any standard jnpig and I will use either/or a Yammie Hula Grub and Snoozers Tube and outfish a rubber strand jig any day....crawfish are crawfish and the presentation is the key with craw imitators....throw away the color combos, the rattles, the weight sizes etc........hula or snoozer on a 1/8 or 1/4 leadhead with a premium hook....GO FOR IT!! JOHN G
I'll limit myself to two colors also: Hula in dark pumpkin and snoozer in Road kill camo........however, I must confess that I will carry other colors too...... JOHN G
Ooooo... John G. trash talking
Pretty neat....
Tony
I`ll challange..................
Looks like the gauntlet has been thrown down !!!!!1
But who will take the challange ?????????? Pete

John, Ill fish a jig...granted you'll outfish me 5 to 1..BUT my one and only fish WILL outweigh your 5......lol....
Joe
John G, ROTFLMAO. Can't believe this,, Heck yes I'll challenge ya. East Vs. West is a 8 hour time frame.
Give me a jig-n-pig in Brown & Purple Frog Hair Rubber marinadied in Heavy Mineral oil ($2.14 at Longs) and a bottle of Uncle Josh's No 11 Purple Pork if water is below 55 degree's.
Above 55 degrees, same jig (Football) with Mastad's New hook (?) and give a variety of colors of Hula Grub's and your on for some fun on the water.
Hay John, How may ways can you use a Hula Grub on a Football head? The answer is 4
1 Hula Grub by it's self.
2. Cut the Skirt off and you have the Grub (Twin Tail)
3. Cut the twin tails off and you have the IKA
4. Cut the skirt off and one of the Tail's and you have a single tail.
All the above can be applied to a Frog hair'ed Rubber Jig in a fashion that has produced fish and of course using the football jig in a variety of different ways.
Oh Ya John,,,, By the way being you made the committment to a challenge has I read it..........YOU BUYING THE AIRLINE TICKET "LOL" Make sure it has a stop over in Dallas, I'd like to fish Lake Fork about right know. (Grin).
Forgot the size of the Jig 1/2 and the 3/4 Pickup

P.s. This ought to add to the Thread, and PatX Shhhhhhhhhh.
PatX is remaining quiet because he knows that he could also take a hula grub and smoke anyone using standard jigs....I am just ribbing all of you guys, because I believe in simplification: I had boxes and boxes of every type of pignjig, and I will tell you, that I catch 10 times as many fish in the same exact scenarios using the two lures I mentioned...ask all the guys that fished those cold waters with me in December, that used to be a time when I would only fish jnpg and yes, I agree, that you will catch quality fish on them, but the numbers just can't approach the ones achieved with those two plastics....probably the best standard jig fisherman that I know is Scully, he can fish the hell out of them, and he will use various sizes, but interestingly, I believe he prefers a plastic chunk over pork...I dunno, can't believe that I made a sudden metamorphosis into a fantastic jig fisherman over the last two years, the difference really is what I am using to jig with and I will stand by that...... JOHN G oh by the way, Scott, in waters where those jigs wouldnt pentetrate 3 inches, I assume you mean heavy weeds in which case I would be switching to a texas rigged worm........
Sorry but you said just two baits...........
A Snoozer tube and Hula grub......those were your words in your challenge and I am holding you too it!!!

OK, now you've done it
John, I will hold you to your trash talk. When I get you out here on the Peconic River, I will inspect your tackle box and then spank you like a little three fingered girl. You will have to watch out for the pickeral here though....man eaters. Seriously though.....I think it all depends on the water you want to fish. I really think that the hula grub is not a popular choice on shallow waters because most guys only fish it deep. I know I've caught fish on it everywhere but my choice of lures for shallow water would be different. We all know that Snoozers tubes rock the Earth but again I think in certain situations a different bait might be a better choice. When you come out here, I'll give you a lesson in Jiggery....you will ruin your day wasting time with baits that will be less productive, but you'll have 80 mlies or so to think about it and to cool down before you get home!!!!! LOL

John, I actually agree with you 100%, but not sure I would have made that bet
Yes, a craw is a craw, and a tube is also a baitfish. I can throw a tube, and cover two different food sources at the same time. And with the heavy heavy cover, I just use a heavier texas rigged tube. I can get that thing in and out of the cover more times than a jig, because I ain't constantly pulling snot off the tube.
I could even take it one step further, I have been telling others for years that the fish they are catching on a spinnerbait, I could catch on topwater. I have always felt if they were aggressive enough, or agitated enough to hit a moving spinnerbait, they will come to the top to a topwater worked by the right hands. But, I'm not going to make any bets here

MONTGOMERY, Ala., -- An analysis of lures used to win nearly 300 professional BASSMASTER tournaments
spanning more than three decades shows plastic worms, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs have won more
tournaments, respectively, than other lures.
Editor Dave Precht reports on the tally in the 30th anniversary issue issue of BASSMASTER Magazine
(June). This special issue of the publication, normally available by subscription only, is now on newsstands.
Plastic worms figured in 89 of 375 BASSMASTER tournament wins; spinnerbaits for 76, and diving
crankbaits and jigs for 56 and 54 victories, respectively.
Some winners credited more than one lure for their success; in those cases, each lure was listed as a winner.
But the trends are shifting. In the last five years, 22 BASSMASTER tournaments were won with spinnerbaits.
Crankbaits and jigs won 21 each. Texas-rigged worms -- the bread-and-butter lures of early superstars like Bill
Dance and Roland Martin -- were used in only eight wins.
A few new lure designs have surfaced as "money baits" in recent years, including plastic lizards fished on
Carolina rigs (14 victories in the last five years,) and jerkbaits (7 wins, including the new soft jerkbaits and
collared spider grubs (5 wins, including the 1997 BASS Masters Classic.)

There were a few things that really sold me on tubes when I first got serious on bass fishing. One, of course, was success with the bait. It just seemed to catch a lot of fish, as well as big fish. I never really was sure why, but it didn't really matter at that point. Then, I read an article in the August of 1999 edition of Outdoor Life.
It was about a study performed to see which type of craw baits got the most hits. Each crawbait(Renowski's I believe), had several parts. The claws, the legs, the tail, the head were all isolated.
The results showed that the clawless, legless, antennaeless crawfish produced best. What was left was practically a tube. The second place went to the clawless craw. Last was the tailless bait with claws, legs and a head. Other variations filled in the rest of the spots.
A tube, as we all know, is a good craw imitation. According to this study, however, it seems better than a Mad Man or other very accurate craw portrayal.
(I love having these articles indexed, all the info at my fingertips.)
