"If there is a good spnrb8 bite, there is always a better jig bite"
True or false? Why?
Posted by Hawgwalker on 2002 AM:
False.....there are no always in fishing. When fish are holding tight to cover the jig may be more productive though I have seen times when they will slam a spinner and ignore the jig.
Posted by mikeD in NYC on 2002 AM:
i hardly use either but
i'll take a shot.
FALSE... because a spinnerbait has a horizontal presentation and flashers to
attract the more agressive fish...if that's what they want, why would they be
more apt to hit a vertical or bottom presentation?...especially if it is windy
or rainy, wouldn't the jig go unnoticed unless you banged him in the head with
it?... i have also heard when fishing a spinnerbait and the bite is off, try
using the spinnerbait like a jig, letting it drop to bottom and lifting...
also, isn't a spinnerbait mimmicking a baitfish while a jig is more like a
crawfish?
again, this opinion is from someone who has 1 1/2 seasons of bass fishing under
his belt and has very little experience fishing these baits... i'm just trying
to stimulate discussion...it seems logical to me, but i am anxious to hear
other points of view.

Paul, you used that word "Always". You know nothing in fishing is ever "Always". Vertical vs. horizontal or is it the speed factor. Slow pres. vs. fast. A jig usually is best tight to cover. If bass are blasting spinnerbaits, they are roaming and aren't nec. deep in cover. I would suffice to say that roaming fish in this type of bite have a larger strike zone than the jig bite fish. I almost never mix the two when one is working. I also do not throw a jig as a follow up bait to a fast mover that missed a strike.

I have seen a lot of
times when it becomes a matter of wether or not the bass prefer a horizontal or
more vertical presentation. We got our butts handed to us immediately
post-spawn by some guys pitching smaller S-baits into open pockets in the new
weeds coming up. We tried soft jerks, tubes and jigs but did not come even
close. Definitely one that I will remember for next year.

I think I'm with Craig on
this one. I believe the spinnerbait to be a chaser bait when fish are on the
move whereas the jig and more of a precision bait that you need to get and keep
in front of the fish more. I admit I need to really work on my jig fishing
because it can catch some big ass hawgs. I also think you need a lit more
patience to fish a jig.
imho

caught my first (and
2nd,3rd, and 4th) bass on a jig this past week. Slow rolled spinners in the
same areas first....nothing.
I am not an expert so this is merely an observation.
Jigs worked in rocks after discovering a half digested crawfish in the
mouth/belly of a fish. On of EW's crafty little creations.
They also worked nicely on stumps surrounded by lillies.. little dragon fly
imitators in black, purple, and sparkle.......hit the stump....let it sink and
WHAM !
I will go to these baits more often that spinners........that for sure.

i have to agree with hawg
and earthworm. there are definitly no absolutes
hmmm i don't think the two go together. when i think spinner bait i think fast
moving in cover
the jig just makes me think pitctching or flipping into cover fishing more
verticialy. i know there are people who do extremly well swimming a jig but i
must be doing it wrong.
i'm sure that they could both work on any given day. i have spots where i work
a fast topwater in a shallow flat and catch aggressive bass and then work my
way off a hump into deep water and slow down a tube or c-rig to work a series
of brushpiles. theese fish are usually close to and less active then the
shallow bass but usually bigger. notice i said usually

This is some of my
experiences. Have thrown practically the whole tacklebox at em' and nothing
worked- except a jig and pig! Smallmouths seem to key on their surroundings to
adapt to the food source that is readily available. Whether it be baitfish,
crawdads,bugs,frogs,etc.... In my opinion the jig works the best as a bottom
presentation. You can slow roll spinnerbaits and let them flutter and all that
good stuff but it's not going to pay off like a jig would. I think the main
downfall of spinnerbaits is that you cant fish DEEP and fast with them! I fish
extremely clear water and if those fish get a good look at the bait 9 out of 10
times you are not going to get bit. Both have their times and places.
Always is like never. They dont mix!
Just my opinion.......![]()

My first answer is false
because because a spinnerbait immitates bait fish while a jig immitates
crayfish. If they're feeding on bait fish why would they go after a jig?
My second answer is true! Because no matter what lure I catch a fish on, once
they're in the live well, they're always spittin up crayfish. Which leads me to
believe that's their meal of preference. So if they're feeding, feed um what
they want.
My third answer is false. Because as many others have pointed out nothing is
ALWAYS true. ![]()

First of all for the guys
that get bogged down over the term "always" substitute "most
always."
I'm not really sure myself, but it sounds good doesn't it. LOL

JP's statement reflects my feelings accurately.
I just figured that the tx fishermen would go back through their experinces and
remember how many days they caught lots of fish on spinnerbaits and still got
beat by guys throwing jigs or vice versa.
The comparison and contrasting of spinnerbaits with jigs was good, just not
what I was after. IMO a spinnerbait is a dressed up jig.

Paul, I like what you said here. I'll add that If angler X is chucking
spinnerbaits in a certain area on a certain lake, it does not nec. mean he
can't catch the bass on jigs.......but it may not mean those bass would hit
jigs either. It is possible that bass on a body of water will be on a totally
different bite. I've experienced it a ton of times. My jig would work for me in
a certain area. Once I moved....no bites on the jig. A pass through the hot
zone...more bass on the jig. That sums up your quote.

My avatar is a picture I took of a roosterfish that my wife caught in Panama on our honeymoon. Every day about noon after we were "tired" of chasing billfish we would move inshore " a la casa de Senior Gallo" where we trolled with light tackle and rounded out our offshore catches.
