QuestionBrewer's Grubs and the Right Jig Head

I picked up some Brewer's Grubs in 3" and 4" and fished them the last few days. I must say they do work quite well. I got the book as well, and have tried to fish the "do nothing" style as perscibed in the book.

Of course I didn't know there were special jigs that are recommended for use with the Sliders, so I didn't order any. I fished the grubs on what I had, which was 1/8th ounce Gitzit Leadhead inserts. It worked well enough to catch fish, but I wonder how important the Slider heads are.

So...should I order some Slider jigs? Which are best for fishing the thick Milfoil beds like the ones at Croton res.? I've been fishing the 4" grubs with the hook exposed, trying to keep them above the weeds, but I still get fouled quite often. I'd like to Texas Rig them, but I'm worried I won't feel strikes in all those weeds. One nice thing about Senkos is that the fish almost always hold them or run with them, so you don't have to worry about missed strikes. Have you folks found that Brewer's grubs are taken as readily as Senkos, or are the fish more likely to drop them like other soft plastics?

By the way, everything seems to hit Brewers Grubs. I caught Picks (toothy critters are getting to be frustrating to play and release), Yellow Perch, Crappie and lots of green fish. One YP darted out of nowhere to grab a 3" grub only a few feet from me. The unwanted interest in them was unbelieveable, too. I fished a 3" grub slowly through a visible group of blugill, and nearly all of them took a whack at it. It was like a bluegill gauntlet! I even had a massive Carp follow it, only to jet away when it got close.

I think you will like the Slider hooks, they are fine wire hooks and work very well. I use the Snagless Slider (1/16)for most of my worm fishing as well as 4 inch tubes, but also use the Crappie and Spider hooks for finesse worming 4 inch worms and 4 inch ringworms....

As for the fish hanging on....I use cold pressed liquid garlic from www.garlicvalleyfarms.com It's very potent and a bottle lasts me about 2 years....about three spritzes into the baggie of grubs will be plenty.

www.sliderfishing.com gets you to the site just in case you didn't know....

Good fishing, Mac

The way to go is the Spider Slider head making it weedless

thanks man, another 20$ on my bill. i reupped my brewers supply. i love to swim them along the weeds. those spider heads work good with mad toms and hellgrammites too in river currents. will be throwing them in july on delaware river float trip, along with the almighty $enko$

The Book Tells All

Turns out there is a section in the Slider book on how long fish will hold these grubs. I guess I'm going to pick up some spider jig heads...

I'm still learning to detect strikes. Perhaps a better rod/reel/line setup is in order! Great, another reason to spend money on fishing gear.

Mark, Gregg showed you a picture of the jig head I use exclusively with it, rigs it just perfect....YES, they will hold onto it, the bass will, you have oodles of time to set the hook properly, as he says in the book, smooth and deliberate, no need to rush, it is almost a graceful hook set when done properly and they will rarely spit it out when you set them that way..... Mark, the brewers grub is a killer....and here is a fact : The brewers grub is better with SM than it is with LM. It is still slamming at cross river.

Now Vic.....you can't say that. I kill on it for largemouth. I've caught smallmouth on it too but think about where you fish the bait.....in Maho......you are more apt to put it in front of a smb because you are targeting where they live in the deeper rocky areas. I drilled the LMB's on Maho pretty good with it in the past...I think more so than SMB's. Try an Owner sled head in heavy veg.

New Wave...Max posted the link above.

I ordered some slider jigs, and should be all set soon. I must admit that these things are great. Another technique to add to the bag of tricks. I must admit that with Senkos, Brewer's Grubs and Snoozers I'm fishing spinnerbait, cranks and topwaters a lot less these days. Anyone else follow this trend as they turned from a beginner to an advanced beginner or intermediate angler?

By the way, just wanted to point out how great this place is again. I have learned SO much since I joined up last fall. Special thanks to John, Frank and the rest of the crew as well as The Senko Baron for fishing with me these last couple of weeks. I hope to fish with more of you soon.

I followed the same trend

Now I'm learning to work the hard baits back in at just the right times. I no longer consider myself a beginner or intermediate rather just an angler.

Ran into the Baron the other night at Croton, he was waring waders and a big smile catching fish on Senko's. I think he could catch a bass on a Senko in my bathtub.

Which is it?

Gregg, is that funny because Jeff could catch bass with Senkos anywhere, or because you keep bass in your bathtub?

I keep them in the tub

Have to do something with the ones I forget to put back!!
