Blade baits
Can any one who uses
blade baits give me some tips as to how you fish this type of lure?
Consider your fishing in the fall with water temps 55-65
What line test?
What depths do you fish with this lure?
What type of presentation? (vertical, cast it out, bottom bounce, steady
retrieve, etc.)
What brand?
What weight lure?
What colors?
Thanks for any help.

What line test?
14lb or better on a med-hvy to hvy baitcaster
What depths do you fish with this lure?
What depths are the fish at? LOL really this is a deep water technique 15 to 40
ft range
What type of presentation?
The technique I'm referring to is a vertical jigging one. You can cast it out
and jig it back to you, you can swim it like a lipless crank, but mostly we use
the sonar to set up right over fish holding on deep structure and vertical jig
it.
What brand?
BPS Lazar blades (more flash then the silver buddies)
What weight lure?
3/4 oz
What colors?
I like silver over the gold (again I think it has more flash)

In addition to Gregg's
thorough response........
Line: 50/12 lb. Power Pro braided line matched with medium/heavy baitcasting
gear. The braided line is more sensitive for detecting strikes and offers
better hook penetration in deeper water.
Depth: Too many factors will determine that answer but start with 15' and work
deeper. Your eyes should be glued to the sonar screen !
Presentation: The techniques Gregg described are on the money !
Brand: Heddon Rattlin Sonar, BPS Lazer Blade & Silver Buddy.
Weight: An assortment of 1/4oz. - 3/4oz. will cover just about any water depth
and conditions.
Colors: I use silver on bright days and clear water......Gold on bright days
with stained water......Chartreuse on cloudy days and water below 40'.

Nick why do you ask???.......Is it the NAFC article???
Nick,
Not sure if you are a NAFC member or not but I just got the lattest issue yesturday
and there is a good article.
You ask:
quote:
What line test?
First off I like to use a 7' MH baitcast rod, it cuts down on the fatigue in
you wrist and arms you would have in a shorter setup. As far as line it is you
choice on braid, mono or fluro, I prefer Gamakatsu Hybrid, it has very little
stretch and it does help a bit when you get hung on a rock or deep stump, I
would go with 10 or 12 pound test.
quote:
What depths do you fish with this lure?
I have used them from about 10' to 60'.
quote:
What type of presentation?(vertical, cast it out, bottom bounce, steady retrieve, etc.)
You can cast them out and swim them back, slightly jigging them as you crank
the handle. Verticle jigging is another way, if you watch the sonar and are
seeing large schools of bait under the boat or fish holding on structure, just dop
it down, hit bottom and start jigging it back up slowly. You can "variate"
as they are quite versatile.
quote:
What brand?
There are many variations of the original Silver Buddy but all basically the same,
some have more flash than others or might be slightly shaped different, but
here is a list of brands and baits.
Buddy Banks - Silver Buddy(the original designed over 20 years ago) $3.89 -
$4.39 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4oz
BPS - LazerBlade(I like the flash these have) $2.99 5/8oz only
Blitz Lures - Blitz Blades $2.99 1/4 and 1/2oz
Reef Runner - Cicada $2.79 - $3.05 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8oz
Cordell - Gay Blade(honestly, that is the name) $2.99 1/4 and 3/8 oz
Heddon - Sonar, Sonar Flash and Rattling Sonar $3.29 1/4 and 1/2oz
Worden - Showdown $3.00 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4oz
Bitzer Creek - Zip Lure $2.99 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2oz
quote:
What weight lure?
I like the BPS LazerBlades which only come in 5/8oz, but have been thinking of
going with smaller sizes for use in the Delaware River's deeper holes.
quote:
What colors?
I like the chrome, gold and chartreuse, good flash for those deep dark waters.

Joe,
I thought that too, not a bad idea though it should be coming into it's time on
Maho for the slob smallies to be chasing bait.

What line test? Nicky,
this depends on the areas you fish. Obviously if you are going to bounce them
off of rocks, you need heavier line but I would start with 12lb floro such as
vanish
What depths do you fish with this lure? I prefer 15 to 35ft. I really lose
contact with the bait after 30 ft or so.
What type of presentation? (vertical, cast it out, bottom bounce, steady
retrieve, etc.) It can be most effective when used vertically in conjunction
with your graph. Get the video by DonIovin that focuses on LCD's and finesse fishing.
Simply apply the blade bait in plave of the finesse baits and you will be successful.
What brand? I like the BPS Laser blade
What weight lure? 1/2oz to 3/4oz
What colors? match forage. I like gold but have done good with rainbow trout,
and silver

Craig,
What length rod are you using??? I know I can still feel the vibration from the
blade quite well in 40' to 50', John and I have caught big perch on Maho in
those depths while searching for the big smallies.
I know I have tried fishing it on a shorter lighter setup and I do not get the
same feel of the lure vibrating or feel of the fish taking it.
The article in NAFC that I eluded to in my post quotes pro Pete Gluszek as
fishing blades as deep as 100', I am quite sure at that deepth most of our
setups would have the blade feel mushy on the end of the line.

I use
the Silver Buddy
I do well with them when the water gets cold in the fall...or when they are a little sluggish in the spring. It's not worked for me in the summer months when I assume the fish are deeper...but spring and fall it's a good bait. Very easy to throw...I use a MH rod with 10-15 lb line...and let it sink to the bottom...and start jigging it. You can really feel the vibration. I catch bass, perch. crappie, and walleye on it....good luck...Mark

Nicky: this business
where we never get together on a fishing trip ( mostly my fault) is going to
end right here and now!
if you are thinking of doing blade baiting for the Maho tourney end of October,
then lets make it a priority to fish it together before then and I can show you
some of the tricks I use with blade baits......once this whaley get together is
over 0Ct 5, I will be clear to make a time for you....Sundays are empty now At Maho
for the most part, you know I have WED off......any WED or SUN after OCT 5.....
LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!

Nick why do you ask???.......Is it the NAFC article???
Scott, Yes the NAFC article had spurred this line of questioning. I ahd always
intended to employ this technic, but never got around to it. After reading the
NAFC article I wanted to pose this question out there to the guys in the
trenches. I never like to take an article at face value. I like to get a few sources
from which the info is gathered & then draw my own conclusion.
Craig, Thanks for the D.I. tip. I'll have to get that video.
John, You are on!!!
Mark, Thanks for the input.

Bass will eat bigger
baits than the 3/4oz tops you guys reccomend. Lots easier to stay in contact
with the bait and bottom. You will waste less time waiting for the bait to get
to the fish.
Tailspinners are also effective from time to time.

Paul, could you elaborate? What brands, colors & weights do you preffer
& why? I appreciate the time.

I like one tailspinner
which has been copied by Strike King and there is another tailspinner I picked
up at Fork years ago. I can't even remember the name of that one.
As far as regular blade baits go I use some heavier ones from Duh!!!. These
weigh about 1.5-3 ozs and come in a variety of colors which I don't think are
that important. A heavy Hopkins Shorty will work just as well.
Posted by Bass Rat on 10-02-2003 02:38 PM:
Paul what test line are you using for 1.5-3 oz baits. Are you using a swivel?

Stupid question but why are you using Blades when the water is that warm? Most people I know wait untill November when the fish have moved out into thier Winter pools. Early october with water temps around 60 degrees is good late season topwater bite for me. Correct me if I am wrong but the fish should still be eating up fairly shallow in that water temp range.

I like to use 17-24lb.
Just 2 weeks ago (in a tx) I was using some 14lb and broke off a nice fish on a
jigging spoon. I had been dragging the spoon on the bottom and I guess the line
got nicked up.
No swivel for me. I have never had the huge twist problems that others speak of
with this technique.

These are all related to
fishing Mahopac in a Tournament about a month from now.
Pat is known for his blading prowess as well as our own John G.
Since everyone is fishing against Pat and Blue and June....Everyone is trying
to have a little something in their pocket.
Mahopac will be getting pummeled the next few weeks.
Blue runs a highly competitive event called the Halloween Classic.
I for one look forward to fishing in this event....Time to get schooled by some
of the best....
See you on the water

Have fun Joe and find
some spots on your own when you prefish....(Start looking for new ones
)
I know where I am going....
I am working all next week. I will get up there a few times before the event.
Unfortunately, my job will dictate when.
Good chance we will not prefish together...
If that in anyway poses a problem let me know and we can make alternate plans.
Tight Lines,
Woody

day.
