swinging bridge reservior
[long]
3:50 am two guys i known
since high school, sean and john arrive at the house and load their tackle into
the ranger. they bring coffee, they have definitly earned this trip allready. neither
one has ever fished swinging bridge or out of my bass boat.
4:26 am we arrive and launch, john
launches me and we begin. the water is 74 degrees and down about 5 foot from
full levels. there is some fog on the surface and not a lick of wind.
4:37am both guys are freezing cold, used
to rowing and not riding. the 60mph ride has given them a chill.
4:45 am we all start throwing topwater
baits of different sizes and shapes. me a silver bellied super spook/ sean a
orange bellied spitting image/ and john a full sized torpedo in frog color.
4:46 I am in 14 foot of water throwing
to the shore john misses a blowup, i catch a 11 inch smallmouth. sean is
picking a backlash
4:49 am sean makes up for lost time by throwing the bait to the shoreline and a
small fish bats it, he sets up and suddenly the rod bows over. 2 minutes later
he has it. on the front hook a 11 inch smallmouth on the back hook a 3 pound 5
ounce smallie. a double on his first non-backlashed cast. GO FIGURE!
5:02 am sean catches another smallmouth,
just over 12 inches
5:06 am john's torpedo is blasted hard,
no hook up and we spend a few minutes throwing the area.
5:12 am i hook into a good fish and manage
to get johns line hooked into my line. i boat a 13 inch largemouth and spend
the next few minutes cursing at tangled line.
5:25 am sean switches to a ugly yellow and white skirted double buzzbait. this
thing sounds like a small dog barking as he throws it. it is boiled on but
missed, i throw to the boil and steal the fish. the smallmouth is 11 inches
long.
5:38 we troll up to a huge boulder
about the size of a short school bus and throw at it. we each catch one in the
next few casts. my smallmouth barely measures, johns smallie weighs 2.12 and seans
weighs 2.14
5:46 no more action on this strech we
fire up the big motor and run towards the dam.
6:01 am i put my topwater rod down and
pick up my wacky worming rod. i hook up a salty sling blue fleck 5" wacky
and start throwing it. the boys in the back howl at the ugly little bait. john
does a imitation of the in-fisherman commerical " i'think i'll throw
this".
6:05 they stop laughing. i take a 3
pound 6 ounce bronzeback off of a stump. the fish jumps 4 times and makes 3
nice runs away from the boat.
6:08 am i hook into another smallmouth
off of a submerged tree. another impressive fight an i have another giant 3
pounds 8 ounces. i dance on the front deck and do my best britney spears
imitation "oops i did it again, i caught me a hawg"
6:15-6:28 am i catch 5 short smallmouth, none
bigger then 10 inches.
6:29 am john asks if he could try a senko......
6:30- 645am i put down my rod and set john up with hooks, he picks a salty
sling white with silver flakes in 5" size. i give him a crash course in
wacky worming and sit back and watch.
648am the line jumps and john sets the hook like he's fishing a 1 ounce jig. the
ten inch fish hits me in the side of the head. i explain that the hooks are
sharp and he needs to tone down the hooksets.
6:50 am i set sean up with hooks, and a
he chooses a Black 5" salty sling.
7:30am-7:50 i continue to run the trolling motor and am having a ton of fun
watching these guys laughing as they catch tons of shorts, rock bass and rocks.
7:55am i pick up my tube rod and throw a
4 inch venom watermelon/ gold glitter. sean catches a 2.1, 2.6 , and a 2.4
smallies in three casts off of a rock wall. john refuses to be outdone and
catches 4 in 6 casts a 12 inch largemouth, and three nice smallies that weigh
2.3 , 3.1, and 2.15.
8am-8:45 a few hits and no fish, we decieced to run to a shoreline
that has produced in the past.
9am after eating a few drake's cherrie
pies and drinking a thermos of coffee we get back to buissness.
9:19 am sean catches a 3.15 largemouth and is hooked on the slings. the bite
has slowed but not dead.
9:31 i catch the big one of the day, a 4.02 smallmouth falls for the tube and
tries to break me off in a stump, after making two turns around the stump i
somehow get it back around and into open water.
9:57 john fires back and catches 4
fish off a small tree in the water. the fish like the white here for some
reason. his 4 go 2.1 2.3 2.14 and 2.7
10:30 the wind picks up and the salty
slings are put away. john ties up a white tube, sean a brown grub.
10:35- 11am there is now whitecaps on the water and we call it a day. we had
only planned to fish until noon
anyway.
sean and john trade me some of their new bungee worms and some nice jigs they
bought at the rockland show for a salty slings in various colors and 50 eagle
claw hooks. i kind of had more fun watching then fishing, with the water down i
took alot of notes of underwater structure. it was a great[ actually excellent]
morning of fishing and the boys want to go out another day. i explained that it
wasn't allways like this, but they don't care, we are set up to fish huntington next week sometime.

that is just an awesome
detailed report. I guess the $, or imatation there of, does it again, at least
after the topwater bite ended. You guys had fun, and that is what it's all
about.

the guys were so
surprised, i tend to down talk a place rather then then build it up so people arn't
disapointed if we hit it on a off day, but the fishing was some of the best i've
seen there in a while. but then again i usually fish it after work not at O
dark 30. i will try it early again.
i almost forgot, as usual if anyone wants to know where i was on the reservior
all you have to do is ask. if you are one of the unregistered readers, take a
second and join NY Bass, the information and freindship on this board are
second to none.

Excellent Detailed Report
Paradise! Nice reading such a report(reminds
me of the Big Pro Bass fisherman on Small Lake X in the BASS magazine article with the time, lure, where you caught
the fish, size, etc.) That Reservoir sure sounds like its a cool place to fish!

Sweet
report!
For a 'Western New
Yorker', hundreds of miles away, it's nice to be able to personally relate to Swinging Bridge and Mahopac now. I knew the hawg potential was very high
at SBR, but unfortunately, we didn't get on the water there until about 9am!
Excellent breakdown of your day. When I get back down your way again, we'll
definitely hook up, paradise!
Tight Lines...

it just worked out perfect. i knew i was going to do more looking then fishing, so i brought my map and my mini tape recorder. so i just camly would record notes as i went. i found some intresting things on the lower clear water as well. a couple years back the shoreline was down 25-30 feet. alot of homeowners docks were out of the water and new pilings were rigged to make them work work. i also found fire pits made from shoreline rocks that are now out in deep water. one in particular was the work of the bored. the firepit is 6 foot round and has a bunch of rock benches built around it. whoever did it had a lot of time. i need to buy a gps unit. i have to triangulate everything.

Damn, Paradise...nice
report!
I had my first boat on Swinging Bridge for 5 years 1994-1999, and while I had a lot of good
days, never anything like that. I used to like taking people out on SB because
it was relatively easy to put them on the SM, and there was always a chance of
hooking a state record Hybrid-Striper...but I never encountered much size on
the SM...I guess all those 10" Smallies I used to C&R have grown up.
Last year I won a club tx on SB with less than 7lbs... the lake was so far
down, that the structure I used to target was 15-20 feet above my head.
This year we fish SB on Sept. 15 & Oct. 13th...any tips are always
appreciated...
Noam
ps Looking to join a club??

i allready fish with the outcast boys, if i joined another club my girlfreind
would kill me. that and i'm not that tough, jim mead is a machine to fish saturday
and sundays back to back. there is still plently of 11 inchers to catch, but i
have found good smallies the last 2 years. our club lunker smallie came of of
SBR last year. 4 pounds 6 ounces.
we fish it again on the 22cnd of sept, i will probably fish again before then, i'll
let you know all the gory details. i might go and fish it sept 1st or the 7th. it
will be better then now belive it or not.

Paradise,
That's right, you were in 3rd place going into your Sackett lake tx.... how are you doing in the standings?
Yeah, Jimmy's a fishin' fool. He fished a SAT. NIGHT tx with us on Mohican...we
finished the weigh-in at 3AM, then he fished with you guys
that same morning on Sackett.
Man, I would have been face down on the casting deck, with a Carolina Rigged
rod taped to my hand...with any luck the wind would blow me over some
productive water while I slept.
I am hoping that the 2 late season tx on SB will be fun...Fall Smallmouth can
really be a ball.

yeah my standing were
hurt pretty good. i took a zip on sackett, 1st time out there but i can see the
potential, we had a guy catch a 6-5 large and the monday night club caught a
7-3 so you were right about the hawgs. it wasn't a great tourney and i lost a spot.
i went into huntington the defending winner from 3 weeks
prior and only managed to catch 16 shorts. winning weight was only 8 1/2 pounds
and third was 4 pounds 6 ounces, i wasn't hurt too badly and fell another two
spots. so i'm in 6th going to highland this week and i hope i can put in my
average performance there. i can usually put at least 6 pounds in the boat. highland
and my limit go together often, but the way i have been fishing who knows. i havn't
been doing anything wrong, just had some trouble getting the bites last couple
weeks. hope i turn it around, got the white lake night, hudsons, mohawk and swinging bridge to
go. i need about 5 pounds more then everyone else to take 3rd back.and second
place is falling fast. first is almost locked allready.

Yeah, those Sackett fish
were acting pretty strange when we were on it...holding deep, but surface
feeding...go figure.
Good luck the rest of the way. I am in 1st, but that isn't too hard with a club
as small as ours...Jimmy is right behind me though, so I've got to fish hard.
Take care,
Noam

yeah , it does look like the lake x reports, i listened to the playback on the tape and basicly transcribed it. it was spelled right out i could hear everything, so i figured everyone would like it. it was a sucess so i think my little pocket recorder will go with me again. like i said earlier i try not ro talk up lakes to much, but the great summer day we had would be considered a typical late fall day. i read your maho report. that wind was something else, huh.

Mr. Topwater
Excellent post. Thanks for the links. Only thing I could not find out about
from the sites are ramp conditions. Any more info is greatly appreciated.
~Angler
Posted by paridiseblue on 2002 PM:
there are 3 ramps at the
Bridge, two are pay and one is free. the first launch is called swinging bridge
marina, it is by far, in my opinion the best launch on the reservior. whether
the water is high or low you can launch here without much difficulty. The next
launch down is croissants and there launch is a good one, on low water it gets
a bit tricky.
the third launch is a free launch, it is provided by southern energy who
operate the dam. i never launch there during a weekend, or in windy conditions
due to the placement of the launch. it can be a pain to reload the boat with
the wakes or wind. also there is no dock so it can be a real pain to launch
alone/ pick up someone. on low water this launch is about useless. i was there
last wensday and water was down about 8 feet. any lower and it would have been
a big hassle.
just a word to the wise, when the water gets low, run with caution untill you
learn the reservior. there are some spots that will destroy lower units, props,
and hulls. Be safe and on the weekend ,watch the traffic. alot of people are
clueless to safe boating procedures. and as usual if your planning a trip just
ask and i will allways help in whatever way i can.

Posted by paridiseblue on 2002 PM:
15$ for both launches and if you launch early in the morning you just pay on the way out. they are cool like that. from the island its probably every bit of 3 hours trailering a boat. but as i allways state directions i'm good with, time, not a clue.....

Truly a hell of a day. I always catch myself doing this, but a tourney
situation would have given you guys:
4.02, 3.15, 3.31, 3.5, and a 3.38
That's 17.36 lbs. on your best five. Not too shabby.
