Not going to believe!
What a
day! Craig and I fished Lake Famine today from 6:00 to 12:15 and ready for this... over 300! Now let me emphasize
that Not One was over 15 inches but what fun regardless. I started out fishing
a Spit "n" Image and as soon as the bait hit the water... BHAM! Craid
had on a Sammy 65 and was doing just as well. We both agreed to pinch all barbs
on baits because of sheer volume. Had a contest for most fish with ridiculous
bait. Craig tied on a homemade hand carved ugly crankbait and I, a bubblegum
floating worm. We were in open water about 7 ft. No challenge. About 15 fish
each! Go figure?? We used rattletraps, worms, tubes, topwater(all day), cranks,
spinnerbaits, four fish on a tournament frog, floating worms, and anything you
wanted to throw. Craig's belief is that the fish are stunted due to a very
limited food chain. Craig even practiced his drop-shotting with great success. Fun
day all around. Thanks Craig for the great company, and horrible bass thumb!! I
am a believer!!!!!!!!!! Rob ![]()

days that end with a raw thumb!
I would like to add, that you would have done yourselves a longterm favor, by
keeping a limit of those fish.

Rob,
Every now and then, a good numbers day & bad case of 'bass thumb' is great,
huh? Makes up for the slow days and boosts the confidence right back up there! ![]()
I've had many great numbers days out on the water, but never over 300 with a
partner! WOW! That is phenominal! ![]()
My personal best day out on the water was last year, where I caught 76 Smallies
in Lake Ontario (61 in 2½ hours!).
Great story, Rob! ![]()

LET NO ONE DOUBT THIS REPORT!!!!!! Earthy and I caught over 200 there a couple of years ago , and it was a SLOW day according to him.....no doubt that you could go even higher on a longer day....it is literally taking fish on and off all the time.....Great job Guys,,,,people who haven't had one of those small gem numbers lakes experiences don't realize that there is a concentration and stamina ability required to maintain and keep going with such a day, it is not as easy as it sounds, also, at various points the bite might slightly change and it you stay on the crest of it with appropiate lure changes, you can keep the flow coming steady.....Rob, Im so glad you were able to experience something like that, Im sure you will agree, if it was like that all the time it wouldn't be bass fishing, but we do need fun outings like that here and there to take the pressure off the ususal slow search patterns we encounter in normal days of fishing....... What a blast of a day. Rob and I limited ourselves to 2 rods each and I chose a ML baitcasting rod and a ML 6-6- spinning rods. We stopped counting at 300. I would put the total closer to 325 or so. There is no doubt that we could have caught 500 bass if we put our hearts into it. We took 100 bass in the first 45 minutes of fishing. We explored the lake and started playing around with some goofy rigs. This lake holds insane numbers of bass. I have yet to see any other type of fish so I feel they are quite stunted. Largemouth-Joe A. The best thing about the day was really giving the Drop shot a whirl. I cleaned up on it. True all fish were under 15 inches but we weren't pulling out many Romeo's either. Average bass was 11 or 12 inches, all cookie cutter fish. John, I only caught about 15 bass on a spinnerbait, The Sammy was king for me in the early morning. We got a ton of bass in the early going.....best of all, no Senko fish...we didn't even try them out. My baits of the day.....Sammy 65, Yo-Zuri Walk n Dog, Ugly purple/gold hand carved crank, Copper Fantasy and Watermelon murder finesse worms from Green Eyes Worm Works, 3" Gitzit all nose hooked on a Drop Shot rig with a 10" drop. Micro Munch Hailey's Komet Thumper Series Spinnerbait. Great day to be with my partner in crime out on the water......I got out despite last minute plan changes. Rob's wife is about to give birth any day now so I figured I'd take him out to a lake where he could wreck his thumb. The name of the lake is " Thumb Mangler Pond". And no, I will still not tell anyone where this place is so don't ask.

What happened to, NO lake X posts John? Hey Craig what exactly is a "Romeo" bass?
Posted by earthworm77 on 2002 PM:
Andy, I didn't see Lake X in any of these posts...LOL -A Romeo is a 6 to 8 inch bass made famous by Dave Romeo and his world record 3001 bass out of Kahlers pond some years ago....good job, only that less than 5% of the fish he caught were legal size.

Earthy, don't get mad at me. But how did you and Rob each manage to cast, reel-in, and unhook 1.1 fish per minute for the first 45 minutes, especially if you were throwing topwater? Didn't you guys run into any lulls in the action, awkwardly hooked fish, a cast here or there without a fish, down time from lure changing? Do you just try and cast as rapidly as possible? I am seriously curious; I am not busting your chops.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm,new
something was up.
Good point huge fish,I was thinking the same thing. With high pressure,&
blue bird sky's,300 hundred fish, highly doubt it.
Told you so JOE.
Posted by earthworm77 on 2002 PM:
It only takes a few seconds to cast and catch. We had a ton of doubles today. Sure we missed a bunch of hits but the action is and was that furious. You guys can calculate the fish per second ration if you want but several board members can back me up on this place....John G included. We ran into some lulls only because we decided to move around, in a tx, I never leave fish that are biting but this wasn't a tx. With flattened out barbs releasing is quick and easy. JP, if you haven't experienced this type of fishing, you are looking in the wrong places. Bluebird skies???? If you are saying that you can't catch a ton of fish with no cloud cover, well we put a big dent in that theory.

This report is totally possible. There are days like that. When you couple experienced fishermen, the right unpressured body of water & the right mood of the fish, the report made by Northbass is without a doubt possible. If you doubt it , you just haven't reached that point in your fishing ability yet, (no dis here) Just a fact, Keep casting you'll get there.

you guys kicked ba$$!...
earthy, can we go there and make a video!?.... that would be fun!...
i totally believe it... i have been porgie fishing where i've caught several
fish per minute over a long period of time...these bass are obviously stacked
thick in this pond...and with earthy and northbass there they didn't have a
CHANCE!... i have never experienced anything close to that while bass fishing,
but why not?!...if the bite is on and two guys are furiously casting, why not?....
300 is easily doable for 2 guys porgie fishing.

No Luck, it was Kahlers! Mike, I know we could have done even better if we were serious and stayed in some of the more productive areas longer rather than explored a bit. I don't think that my expectation of 500 was too large.

first
read john g's post
then read this
we have both fished this body of water..
nick... better than that pond too
... just smaller fish.
i have fished thumb mangler pond before and will attest to the numbers. if you
can texas rig a cigarette butt it will catch fish. a great place to try out new
lures to get a feel for them. the fish are all stunted, and are pretty much
identical in size and color.
i think the lake has little to no forage, so the bass are really always ready
to feed. craig caught 2 or 3 bass in the time it took me to hook up my battery
last time.
we caught on spinner baits, worms, senkos, hand pours, top waters, and anything
else i could find.
although you may doubt the numbers... they are pretty accurate. you will rarely
cast and retrieve without a fish on.

there are way too many identifying features for a video. you would have to see
it to understand. a great spot.. guys have to trade spots of equal value, and
so far only yankeesrule has come up with numbers like this... and on another
farm pond.. go figure.

how do you get to kahlers? i've been trying to get decent directions and find the place for the past 10 years. no one ever gives decent directions. how do you get there? i think its on montauk highway, heading east from farmigville area, but after that i don't know.
Posted by ChrisChance on 2002 AM:
27A EAST of the very end
of horseblock on the left. after Brookhaven but before you get to eastport...
large gap I know, but you can't miss it...
Posted by earthworm77 on 2002 AM:
Kahlers is in Moriches on Montauk Hwy. Just cruise along until you find it. The lake will not give up those numbers of yesterday. There are a few big fish to be had. I think there is a construction project going on in the park so you might have a tough time launching a boat.

Craig, Here's a challenge!
Hi Craig,
You bring up a very interesting piece of Long Island bass fishing history with that pathetic 3001 dink catch!
Why dont you and I get together and try to beat it? between the two of us, we
should catch two bass every 30 seconds, 4 per minute, 240 per hour x 8 hours is
1920 fish. 10 hours would yeild 2400 fish, 12 hours would give us 2880 fish and
14 hours would haul in 3360 dumping that record into the toilet!
Give me a call and lets talk !
Tight Lines!
Charlie. ![]()
PS Your "magic pond" would not be opposite a school building towards
the very end of the island would it? ![]()

hugefish - bassrat and i
fished a local pond for a few hours one morning, and i walked away with blood
on my right thumb. i wore enough skin away to bleed. we caught fish on almost
every type of bait. i found a bag of bright green do nothing worms, and rigged
any old way and we fished until i ran out. almost every cast yielded a fish. these
ponds are located deep in the woods. 4wheel drive or a good pair of LPC's to
get there. we even toyed with wacky rigging a cig butt to see if they would hit
it.
i fished some spots w craig that just gave up bass by the truckload. it is a
shame that we can't all experience that at least once.
vic - yankeesrule had a day like this on a farm pond while doing some work. if i
remember he was like a 4 year old on christmas morning.
maybe it is time for the spencer and craig video ew. lol. the holy s video.

Robbie, I just checked out that video the other day and realized that there are two very good days of fishing....the first was an all out thumb wrecking adventure in which we took like 80 fish in a short time on video and the second was a big bass trip were we have 4 or 5 fish between 4 and 6lbs. Cool stuff. I also have some footage of a 30lb striper among others. Ahhh, but who am I to say...I don't catch big fish. I'll go crawl under a rock!!! LOL
