Black Lake, NY - Pike/LB
My brother and I went up
to Black Lake on Mother's Day -she's in Florida!
First time to B.Lake, typical canadian shield lake - combination of marsh land
and exposed rock shoals.
Lake temp. was 58 -60* in bays and
shallow water. Decided to fish "Lonesome Bay" in the south portion of the
main lake. There was deep water (24ft - most of the lake is 14 to 16ft) that
leads into the bay on one side. We worked from deep to shallow water, passing
pike fisherman on outside weed edge 6-8ft.
We proceeded into 1-2 ft of some of the narly-est stuff I have ever seen. I
think it was the base of cat-tail reeds - almost like wood, very stiff and
hard. They were 1ft to 6" from the surface. In between these clumps, there
were channels about 2-3ft deep.
The weather was overcast with rain on the way. LB and Pike were laying on top
of clumps and active. With in 30 minutes of fishing shallow, we had boated too
many to count - lots of pike 1 to 3 lbs. and LB's in the same weight class. By
the way we didn't see any "pike" fisherman reeling any in.
There wasn't any reason to throw anything else but spinnerbaits -3/8 colorado or willow leaf. S-baits came
through weeds nicely and produced enough vibration to attract fish. Both were
active and chasing!
We did catch some big-un's - 3 LB's that were between 4-5 lbs and My brother
hooked into a monster pike 10+ for about . . . . 15 seconds. The boil made me sh-t
my knickers - awesome!
After my second big'un the rain came. . . for the rest of the day. Fish became
less active and moved tight to clumps and channels between them. We switched to
soft plastics and were able to keep picking them off but not as rapidly. I went
to a floating worm (bubble gum) with a barrel swivel 18 " in front of
bait, # 2 EWG Gammie, and a venom glass rattle (small). With a twich, twich,
die retrieve - they just couldn't resist.
We lasted until about 1:30 with the rain and the cold -
hands were stiff and dead. All in all, a great morning on an excellent fishery
- LB's were fat and healthy (and plentiful!) - we caught way to many fish to
count, everything released unharmed!

Lieutenant--
I'm pretty handy with the photo editor. If you can email it to me I can
probably crop/resize it for you...

Save some for me
Lieut.
Sounds like you had a great day.
I'll be hitting Black Lake the first week in August when I visit my inlaws for
awhile.
By then the weeds will really be thick. Any suggestions on tackle for a new basser
for the hot months. Great pix too.

Tim . . .
When you go in August I'd
bring a few buzz baits. there is no way when the weeds grow that boats will be
able to go where the bass do! I'd buzz the huge weed flats, or hit the deep rock
pocket for smallies - I only got to fish a small portion of the lake but look
forward to exploring. I have a few spots that look very interesting - we have a
Tx there this summer!

Great report.......
Lieutenant,
Although I check the message boards weekly. it's been awhile since my last post
but I could not pass on this message.
I live on Black Lake and received many reports this season but none as
outstanding as your's. Sounds like you and your brother had a great time. I
know exactly where you were fishing and I am very surprised that no one else
was back there with you. This area of the lake in the spring is one of the
lakes true hot spots.
I would like to ask your permission to add your Black Lake report to my Black Lake Fishing
Reports Page as well as add your photo to the Braggin' Board page.
BTW-A good August largemouth lure is the Senko wacky rigged. Throw it in a
pocket in the weeds and leave it settle to the bottom. Best Senko color is
black.
