My biggest bass....Finally!
Well I finally did it and
what an experience!
I was fishing Lake Skanatati in Harriman State Park this evening, from 6ish to 8:30. First hour and a half, nothing,
not even a bite. I though it would be another frustrating dog day of summer for
me again. Right around 7:30pm my wife met me at the boat launch
and off we both went. (she's my good luck charm!) It took her a near 5 mins to
catch one. She was using a purple lizard w/green flakes. It is her favorite
bait. I insisted on staying with a spinnerbait, chartruese, as I didnt want to
switch to the trusty plastics. She fished the shore lines and I continued
fishing the opposite side of the boat where the water was 5ft + deep. A few
minutes after her first catch, I hooked one on. Not too big, not even worth
measuring or weighing.
Continued with the deeper water side of the boat, and she kept at it near the
shore line. Then it happened! Something hit the spinner really hard. I knew I
had a hawg as it was putting one helluva fight. It started left, then it took
one jump outta the water...WOW...she was big! It then turned to the right, I
turned rod left. She then made her way around the back of the boat, and I
literally, turned the rod over my head, so that I could turn myself around. My
wife grabbed for the net, as I told her to get ready to grab it. As it swimmed
near the boat, we got a really great look at it, she said, "Holy !@#$, its
huge! Then, my worst nightmare, it darted right under the boat. I thought I
would loose it...@#$%&*, I cant loose this thing, so I flipped the switch
"thingy" so the line would let out without me loosing the tension.
For some reason the fish turned again, as I reeled it out from under the boat. Thats
when my wife skooped it up with the net! It curled up inside the net, it was so
big. My wife reached for the trusty electronic scale, as I fought to grab it by
its mouth. Man she was heavy! Then came the bad news, and out of the year and a
half I have used this scale, the battery was dead! What? So thanks to this
board, I decided to measure her as I heard you can average the weight by its
total size.
So you guys ready for this....22 inches! And &inches wide, and trust me,
she was fat as a hog! We snapped our pics, and a few minutes of admiring this
beautiful fish, we turned her loose.
That absolutely was the best fishing experience I have had yet! Cant wait to
get those pics developed to post then up here in the bragging section!![]()

I am trying to find the link
from DEC that lists weight by size? Any help is appreciated!
And thanks Bigred...I was so afraid of loosing that fish, a little luck I
guess, especially when she went under the boat!

Sweet fish! Sounds like a
hawg! Here's the site you were talking about http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/...#Bass and Trout
Says the Bass would be 6 lbs 6 ounces but depending on the girth it could be as
much as 7 lbs or larger! No matter what the weight beautiful catch! Can't wait
to see the pics!

hey thanks Gr8t for the
link!
I tell ya, my hand got real tired real quick holding her for the photo. Man I
wish my scale was working. I take 6lbs 6oz, but she definately felt heavier.
Never realized a 6lber was that big!

Gem, it would be safe for you to tell people that you have now caught a 6 pound bass......forget the ounces and stuff, that is so hard with length and girth.......now you could work on the 7 pounder!!!! JOHN G

Great catch
Gemini
Sounds like you'll remember this fish for a lifetime. A least you have some
pix. I caught a 4+ lb smallies a month ago in a small pond. Had the scale, but
no camera to record it. Thank god my son and his friend were along, otherwise
it would go down as another "fisherman story" By the way, were you
using your Fishing Buddy 1200, lol , or was it too shallow?

Not on a digital. Funny
you should mention what kind of camera. I just recently got married in
February, so I was using the one of the many cameras we had at the ceremony
tables that still had pics left to take. I just finished up that camera last
night and will be developing as soon as I can. I do have a scanner so I will be
scanning and posting as soon as I possibly can. I want to post it up for
bragging rights! ![]()

Nice fish!
Congrats to the wife on the nice net job.
When you got married you made this a TEAM effort right?
Posted by gemini70 on 2002 PM:
Believe it or not, she was the one that got me back into fishing after about a 15 year hiatus...then again I use to saltwater fish back then.

I was thinking about it, but I really dont have a room in the house that it would fit the decor...unlees it was in the garage? Havent really setup any type of "game-room". I think the pic will get put into a nice frame and put on the entertainment center instead.
