Phenomenal Whaley Get Together!!!!

When I got the urge to have one more of these things this year, I had certain things in mind:

first, there were a whole bunch of new guys on the board, and I was anxious to meet some of them...

secondly, I wanted a water where you didn't have to have a bass boat to do well and still catch fish, so Whaley of course was the ticket......

Anyway: we ended up with about 15 boats I would say, and everybody caught fish as they will tell you when they went on...

Water temps were down in the upper 50s in the AM!!! Quite a jump down from the 64 I clocked just this past WED......so naturally, it made for a trickier than usual bite over there...

but , Whaley is Whaley, and you will catch fish if you stick with it....

Gregg, Pete and I had a couple of great patterns working...

one was the hard jerk, and we really had to work it subtle, they did not want a lot of action, very little twitching and the takes were not that hard

then of course, senko, which also was a soft type of bite today....

we did run into a little spinnerbait magic, white being preferred....

but inevitably , it was the tube that did us the most damage....in the last hour, we returned to the deep Southern End and found an incredible tube bite in 25 feet of water!!! this was in direct contrary to everything we had seen so far that day as shallow was the ticket....prior to that, any sort of mid depth or deep bottom bite was absent....but fate shined on us at 3 o'clock and thanks to Gregg, who unearthed the pattern, we were able to sock another 20 into the boat in that hour, including all of our biggest fish.....again, nothing very big like WED, but at least they were all keepers, and larger Pickerels.....

in total, we had 60 combined Bass and Picks, plus one lone Yellow that Pete caught on that deep tube bite......

I got to meet many new faces, such as Ronnie Basstalker, Randy Hooked again, Wandy, City fishing Stan, Jerry Bullfrog, Matthew Khan, and many other newcomers to the board......of course, many of the "old timers" like Dodge, Frank M, Frank B, Tim, Scott C and so on, were there........

I will let the others come on now and talk about their days, and I will jump in again a few times on this thread.....

this was one of the most enjoyable get togethers of the year, everyone was in great spirits....

MUCHO KUDOS to Domenic Gallo and his Crew at Whaley Marina, who went out of their way to make us feel so comfortable, and who opened up the barbecue pit just for us to accomadate our palates!!!! It is how Businesses SHOULD treat their customers......Nuff' said!

thanks to john for arranging a great get together!!!thanks to domineck for the hospitality!!!i fished with tval who was good company and a great fisherman also.in the morning we had a soft plastics bite consisting of senkos and red 5 inch cyttail worms.in the afternoon after talking to pete l. i decided to try a spinnerbait.i put on a white french quater quad shad and proceeded to catch 6 fish in a row.needless to say we both threw spinnerbaits the rest of the day.i wound up with a total of 20 fish but nothing huge.today was just a lot of fun with a great bunch of guys from nybass.hopefully next year i will get to fish with more of you.

John G,

Its sounds like you had a great day at the get-together.

Sorry we couldn't make this one and we will be looking foward to next years get-together.

It will be nice to put some faces with some names.

Also, I would like to thank you and all your efforts (along with the other guys) for producing such a great website for all the bassfishermen out there.

This site is one of the most informative bass websites out there and it is a place where we can all share and learn from eachother.

So, thanks again John for all your contributions.

My hats off to you John for pulling off another great NY Bass
get together.
It was great seeing some of the guys I met
at Bass U..........as usual dodgeguy,Tim,Gregg,Pete,Frank M.
etc......
I was with my uncle and Jerry Bullfrog,A GREAT GUY and
excellent fisherman.......our boat wound up with 30 plus fish,
soft plastics were the ticket. Many of the "usual spots"produced
very little or nothing.........I still have to learn about bass habits
to become a better fisherman..........a wonderful time....thank you.

P.S. Dom Gallo and his brother are class acts, always looking to
accomodate the customer, sadly a lost trait these days

Classic nybass get together where you get to meet new people and see old friends. Classic Whaley I was catching more Pickerel then bass, almost caught up in the end with a classic tube bite. Hey John "there's no fish in the deep water" LMAO

but how can you go wrong when you fish with these two bassholes

I sure was suprised when I tried to start my car and realized Wild Bill left the lights on!DOH!LOL
Luckily I got a jump quickly and was fine. So to all who fish with Wild Bill beware, He will sabotage you vehicle and swing bass at your head!LOL

Great Day!

Another Great Get together! I had Ronnie the Basstalker on the portaboat. We got out on the water at 7am and found a shallow bite quickly. We worked around the first Island and picked up our first 6 fish this pattern held up for a couple of hours I was throwing Senkos (Surprise) and Ronnie was throwing tubes and Senkos. The bite slowed down and the fish moved off the shallow. Ronnie found a great Spinnerbait bait and grabbed about 10 fish with it. We put about 40 fish in the boat 20 of them where bass none over 2lb . On one agreisive hookset I launced a 10" pikeril out of the water and hit Ronnie in the head with it fortunately he was ok . Got to watch your hookset at Whaley Ronnie was a great guy and a real good fisherman and I look forward too fishing with him on the reservoirs.
And that seems too be the point of these get together meet new people, fish with new people, Learn new things. A real success Thank you again John G

And as always’s great too see all the old timers!

Jeff

TalkingA ton of thanks....

....to Dr John G for putting this all together, and pulling it off so fantastically. The time, effort, and information John gives to us all is incredible for events like this, in addition to all he does here on the forum normally. Special thanks, Doc...
...to Barry for the ride and company there in his truck, and for my 'second shift' in his boat. It was a real pleasure and look forward to another adventure together.
... to Joe[Bass64], with whom I spent the bulk of the day as his guest in his boat. Joe, I am sorry about the lights, as I would have sworn I turned them off when I parked it, but I guess not. Sorry.. I had a real great time fishing with you, and hopefully we can do it again soon anywhere. Having fish swung at the captain, I thought was the ultimate compliment a non-boater could do for the boater's ego as it shows you knew how to find fish for us and that we were in them good.....[lol] this way you got to see them real well, you know, up close and personal for your inspection...[lol].
... to Joe Pido, with whom we convoyed on the road with, and who offered to take me out on Mahopac sometime soon for some drop-shotting and other tactics there.
...and finally to Domenic of the Whaley Marina, and his crew that helped us lauch, and then cooked for us too.
It indeed was a great day, with truly great cammaderie; getting to meet some new faces, and seeing many now familiar ones too ...though windy and cool, I think almost all did catch fish, with LMs and Pickerel the main catches. I had the 'cookie-cutter sized Bass" thoughout the day on Senkos, and did indeed see the bite pick up later in the day too. Sorry I missed the photo shoot, but I was busy helping load boats ,and halting road traffic when it was going on.
A great day !!

Thumbs upGreat Get Together !!!

First I want to thank John G for making this possible. This get together was everything I expected and more. I've never met a better group of people anywhere !!!

Jeff already summed up our fishing day so I wont get into any additional details. I had fun fishing with Jeff, he's a great guy and a savvy fisherman, I look forward to getting out with him again very soon.

Caution: All future fisherman, beware of Jeff's hooksets as you may end up wearing a #@%$&* pickeral for an earing as I did today !!! (LOL)

Finally, I was a little sceptical today knowing I would be fishing from a Portaboat, well so much for scepticism, this boat ROCKS !!!
This was the first time I fished from one and I was very impressed......this thing is rock solid !

I enjoyed meeting everyone today and I look forward to next years get together.......

Great get together

I finally figured out how to make it up there and I am glad I did. I was hooked up with hooked again and the day was incredible. Not a lot of catching but the fishing was great and the company was better. Mostly on spinnerbaits and a couple on T-rigged senkos.

(I took a bunch of pictures on the way up and will post them separately as I do not know how to do it as a group).

I look forward to fishing with other members (as well as hooked again) in the future. I really want to get out on the kensico before i commit to a boat there so if any offers are open I'm a taker.

John,
Thanks so much for another memorable event. It was a tough bite and with the wind and the temp changes it was hard to put things together.
For us LI boys when we saw 10-12' of water we thought we were fishing deep. I never thought of trying in 25'.
We all had a good time though, with my son Nicholas catching his first Bass and Picks after developing a mean backhanded skip. ScottC was patient with my less than skillful boat handling, and helped Nick with tangles and knots.

Thanks again for a great day.

Thanks Guys!

Everybody has already said it but it was a great day at Whaley! Wandy I welcome any opportunity to fish with you again, thanks for some good conversation, some education and a pretty good sandwich as well. Sorry we didnt catch a few more but I had a great time. I promise to learn this lake a little better since its so close to me and next year we'll have a few proven spots to hit.

It was great finally meeting some of the other guys as well. Everybody has always talked about what a fantastic group of guys this is and I found it to be true yesterday. I look forward to fishing with more of you.

For us it was a slow fishing day with Wandy picking up most of the fish. We couldnt seem to find a pattern that would hold. Spinnerbaits did the best for us but we were picking up a fish here and there and didnt pull more than one fish out of any one area. All of our fish came in the shallows about 20 ft off the bank at the edge of the slope. I had a ton of little hits that I couldnt hook up. The water was so clear that at times I could see fish just pecking at the bait but often they wouldnt bite.

Even with the slow catch for us it was a great day and I look forward to the next get together!

Huge: I believe Mark G pulled out a 2.5 pound LM, so when he posts, you can find out what he used.....

Tim: you had me laughing out loud there buddy!!!

Being on a bass boat, I guess I didn't consider the effect of the wind on the smaller jons.....My 12 foot jon boat has an electric minn kota anchor which is a real savior in windy weather, I would have been anchoring down a lot in certain spots.

As you can see by some of the posts,
NO lake is a gimme, and even a potential high number lake like Whaley does require some knowledge of the water and it's ways to do well in less than optimal conditions. Fortunately, over the last 2 years I have fished that water quite a few times and have learned a lot about it, but there is certainly a way for me to go also, as I have not learned how to consistently pattern the bigger fish.

Huge,

I hate to admit it but the SENKO ruled the day.....hands down !!!

I resisted using the senko until Jeff put 4 bass in the boat before I could buy a bite on anything else.

I'm a big tube fan and it's rare I wont get bit on one but that was certainly what happened yesterday as I only caught 1 fish with it !

I always throw the senko as a last resort but that was not an option yesterday. The bass were very finicky and only a dead-sticked senko produced the best results.

Hate to say it but it was the definetely the type of day that would make ANYONE a senko believer !!!

Whaley

All I can say as a first time participant in a nybass gathering is THANK YOU to all many times over. JohnG thanks for organizing and putting these events together. It was great getting to meet everyone. i wish I had more time to hang out after we were off the water...
To Mike H and his Uncle thanks for everything, sharing your boat, and fishing knowledge you guys were great. I had a great day on a new body of water...
To the crew at Whaley marina thanks for your hospitality and the chili in a bread bowl was great...
As far as fishing I caught 10 picks,3 bass, and one nice size yellow perch... all on plastics. Tried a chart spinner and diving crank bait but no hits. I thought with all those picks the spinner would work but it sounds like I had the wrong color.

I've heard a few comments about the
Bass U. Is there going to be more seminars this year?

Posted by joe p on 10-06-2003 01:17 PM:

Another successful get together in the books. A huge turnout despite a few cancellations, the weather was cooperated, and the fishing did too.

I was paired up with Mark G, one of those reservoir dogs. A very nice guy, fun to fish with, and a knowledgable angler as well.

We started at the shoreline across the marina, using topwaters. We wanted to gauge the activity of the fish, and sure enough after 20 mins, the topwater bite was off.

Speeding down to the south end, and having the place all to ourselves, Mark and I pounded the shoreline with a variety of lures. We were targeting the first and the second breaks away from the shoreline, at 7-15 ft. A deep dock produced the first fish of the day, a fish close to 3 lbs, on a Senko , by Mark. A picture fish, I thought, LOL. Mark landed the fish like an expert on light line.

Going along the shore towards the mountain of rocks, I proceeded to bang 3 fish on a black and brown jig. Good Whaley fish about 2 lbs. Then as we rounded the bend at the big rock I took another keeper fish from 20 ft, on a drop shot.

Mark wanted to fish a point which Jet 300 showed him and so I obliged. And there we caught fish ( all bass), on the jig, a brush hog and senkos.

By
12 noon, we headed back to the marina and had lunch with the crew, comparing notes. By what everyone was saying, the north shore featured bass and a LOT of pickerels. I hate those things. We checked the north shore to find out what the fuss was all about , found nothing and jetted back down to the south end.

Unfortunately, the quality fish we found early in the morning were gone, instead the picks were there instead. A few bass here and there from 15 ft , nothing spectacular.

Mark and I mustve caught about 25 bass, and a few picks. Our best 5 around 11 lbs.

This get togethers are fun, guys. We will do it again, next year, for sure.

Id like to thank Mark for hanging out with me on the boat. We will surely fish together again, on those big bass waters of yours, the reservoirs......

Joe

Not a whole lot more that can be said !!! As with all NYBASS events , a great group of guys , lots of laughs and plenty of fishing. Good to see some old faces and to meet some of the newer guys. Fishing with John and Gregg is always a pleasure . Of course most of our laughs came from breaking Johns stones. But the man does know that lake and can always figure out where to find the fish. THanks again John for putting this together and having me on your boat !!!!!!! Not to mention the ride up , the burger , etc. etc.

Also , not sure who brought the coffee and doughnuts in the morning , but THANKS. It was greatly appreciated!!!!

Well said, Joe!

I again had a fantastic time on Whaley with some of the best of NYBass. Joe recounted the fishing pretty well, so I'll add some things I learned today...

  1. You can catch fish fish on other lures, even when the senko appears to be the best or only option. Joe started banging out a few fish on a small jig n pig, and then generously offered me one. I proceded to catch a bass with it right away...
  2. You have to have a quick trigger with a jig. I knew this from people's posts, but old habits are hard to break. Joe pointed out that I should set the hook asap without feeling for the fish (or talking about the hit I felt) and it finally sunk in.
  3. Drop shot rigs do work. Joe spent some time fishing the drop shot and took some nice fish on it. I've never been comfortable with that presentation, but as Joe said, it will come in handy on the reservoirs next season.
  4. Electronics are key. I think the best pattern of the day was foundby Gregg, John G. and Pete L. with the deep water tubes. I'm not sure that they marked the fish before they started tubing them up, but the last few get-togethers has taught me that John has a knack for using his electronics along with deep water techniques to pull up fish when the fishing is tough. He did it this July on Croton with a blade bait, and now he and his boatmated did the job with tubes in 20+ feet.

Thanks to John G and all of NYBass for a great event...once again.

Special thanks to Joe P for being a great host. I'll fish with you anytime you want!

And finally, some pics:

Joe with a nice largie pulled up with a jig. He's not used to being photographed with such a small fish

My best largemouth taken on a 5" senko

ps...Wandy, great pictures. You're quite a photographer!

TalkingThank you guys

Thank you John G. for organizing this. Thanks to Domenic and clan for service in the often forgotten sense of the word. Thanks to everyone else for donuts, fishing tips, conversation, laughs, company, and just in general being a good group of people.

A special thanks to Vic BassHawg, my excellent front seat guy for the day. Vic and I are not in the group shot because we were off the water early; Vic wanted to go home and watch the Yankees, I had to go home for my youngest daughter's birthday. Vic, you can share a boat with me anytime.

Considering I had never been to Whaley, Vic had only been on it once, and we were fishing without the aid of electronics in a rented jonboat, I think we did OK. We figured about 10 fish between us for the day, almost all pics. One of them slammed my little crankbait, which was my best bait for the day. Vic stuck with his Power Worm in tequila sunrise. One funny little pic stared at it right in front of us before taking it. Understand, these fish are relatively new to me (I've only lived out east for 4+ years), so I find them amusing.

Sorry I couldn't hang around for post fishing festivities, hopefully next time. I will definitely plan on making these whenever I can.

Great get together John

Met up with Khan in the morning who surprised me with coffee and doughnuts. I couldn't believe it especially since I was late meeting him. First we hit the island and it wasn't too long before we had fish in the boat and lost rigs to those toothy critters. I fished most of the day with Junebug 6 inch lizards. Pulled up 3 bass and at least 6 pickeral. Khan did good and tried several different lures. Finally switched over to senkos and got some more fish. Good to meet someone from these neck of the woods, hopefully we will be out fishing together again soon. John this is the second get together I have made it to and it was as good as the last one. Hope to see some of you up north this year or next to fish some of the local waters. Thanks to all and hope to do this again soon.

Sounds like a wonderful time. I am truley sorry I missed this one.I was at my last tournament on Orange Lake. I hope there is another University for the winter time again. These bass get togethers is the ultimate.
