Warmwater Discharge.
Now it's time to fish the
warmwater discharges . If theres one near you to fish . I had the boat out for
the last trip of the year and WOW what a day . I must say it was more like
summertime fishing . Between my friend and I we caught over 50 smallies and a
few LargeMouth . Just about all the fish were caught slowrolling spinnerbaits
but when the bite got slow snoozers tubes worked real well . So it's a must for
winter time fishing you gotta go! Titelines !

Jeff, great advice, the
only problem here is where are the waters at all where there are any warm
discharges, and secondly, can you get to them, is the launch ice free?
for example, we have a couple of reservoirs where such discharges exist and
even in the dead of winter, the water right around them might be free, however,
no boat launching allowed on the NYC reservoir system in DEC through end of
March!!!
so , in many cases, your advice might be downright frustating, in that knowing
such a mother lode may very well exist and not for several reasons be able to
get to it!!!
good post......

Come to LI and fish the LI sound by the Northport Power Plant.....striped bass
and bluefish ALL YEAR !! I have had some nice 8 lb blues and bass to 12 lbs in
February........its only a 3/4 mile walk to the spot and fish can be caught 10
feet from shore !!
Fish forget to migrate and get "trapped" in warm water.........
Just a thought.........

Scott, you got me to bite...
What are you catching
them on?
Do you need any village or township perrmits to park, or fish there? Need to be
a county resident? I live in Nassau County.
I have heard about this several times while in a bait shop in Wantagh, but never ventured off to find
it. Please e-mail me, or pots here, with directions there, and a basic '101' on
the deal there, especially as I fish artificials only. Soft-plastic swimbaits? Spoons?
Any surface action ever? ou wearing waders, or bank fishing? COOOOOOL !!

WildBill....
What you want to do is go to Crab Meadow Beach. Check this:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.ad...homesubmit.y=15
Or go to mapquest and look for it there. It is just East of Northport. When you
get to the beach park and walk WEST toward the stacks. You cant miss them !!
Walk until you cant walk any further as the outflow blocks your way. Along the
way especially at low tide you will see an assortment of sandbars. Most of
these hold fish all year as the general current (warm) flows east from the
plant. Mainly I fish right at the outflow and cast right into it as if you were
fishing a stream....cast up stream and let your offering bounce along the
bottom. What I used there was white bucktails 1/4-1/2 oz with a triangle head.
(Not easy to find) and tip them with a white Uncle Josh pork strip. Or any
white bucktails in those sizes. Medium to light action spinning outfit and
maybe 8-10lb thin diameter line so you can cast the light bucktails. Thats it.
I have also used small poppers (blue/white) all white or even silver along the
sandbars....there is good flow around the bars and thats where the bass and
blues hang out. Best action on the bucktails though. Bring a bunch as snags are
possible especially in the thick of the flow. I havent been there for a few
years but its been a hot spot for a long long time. Bring waders but dont put
them on till you get there as its a long walk and they can get heavy or even
wear in the creases around the knees.
and be VERY careful if you wade out to a sand bar. (best fishing of course) The
troughs between them are deep with current and the tide change on the north
shore is swift and extreme. You can EASILY get caught out on one and will have
to swim to shore. Not desirable in the winter. But you can get to them and have
a blast. Get a tide chart for Northport. Also.....current from the plant is
swiftest when its cold as they are cranking up the power usually. This can be a
great place to relieve cabin fever.
During the day and off season I have never had a problem parking there.
Hope this helps....
I will probably go there this winter....when I do I will post here and let you
know.
Good luck and tight lines !

Man, what memories of
Northport. I used to fish there years ago. It truely was untapped then. I
rarely saw guys there then. I did go back about 5 years ago, but the place must
have had 15 guys all trying to fish the outflow area - what a mess. What made
it totally rediculous was the flyrodder whipping the masses that were trying to
fish around him. Shame.
I took Scully there about 6 or 7 years ago and we had a great time. I hate to
admit it, but we did sneak up into the plant itself and fished the warm water
pools that were then owned by LILCO. Easily 100 fish nights - awesome fishing.
We were like two little kids sneaking into the hole in the fence. What memories
with my bud!!!!
Ray went back two or three years ago and didnt have such a great time. Guess
what happened........
Ray, I'll let you tell the story if your watching.
(hint - HE GOT CAUGHT!!! lololololololol!)
sorry bud, but please tell the story anyway! ![]()

you "tattle tale"
Yes....blabermouth..I got
caught. lol They threatened to arrest me if I didnt give myself up. You see I
had attempted to remain in "stealth mode" even after they spoted me
and a friend who was sharing this experinece with me.
Under these conditions I had no other choice but "to give up". Thats
hard to do when your catching fish after fish. That was just the beginning.
They made us walk back the long way around. They wouldnt let us back on to the
beach. We must have walked three miles through a residential neighborhood to
reach my van. Not knowing where my van was located from the spot of
"ejection", I made continuous lefts...trying to keep the north to my
left.
To make matters even more of a "cluster f--k", we were wearing hip
boots with Koarkers. I had to take them off, throw them over my shoulders and
walk in my stocking feet with the air temps hovering in the low 30's....fun
We have never gone back, and thats the truth...lol

I see from everybody's
post nobody has been to Northport in a while.
I'm not sure but if I were to guess I'd say that since 9-11 the security has
been heightened. Although I'm sure the fish are still there I doubt if they let
you get as close as they used to.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone's been there lately. I'm kinda hoping I'm
wrong.
I know of a power plant I used to fish in the Tampa area in Florida
that was very productive during cold fronts. Last year they wouldn't let us
near it. Not even by boat.

You know, now I am feeling better....
about myself and my complete lack of control when it comes to fishing adventures. While I have never been ticketed or arraested[yet], I did sport camo waders and a camo shirt for quite a while, as I did some 'covert' activities, too, but not at this location. Did get a few 'escorts out', though, from an excellent NJ water. Too many to be proud of....and the final time I was told I'd be arrested the next time. Now they made playing the game serious!!

Don't think you wanna get caught lurking around power plants at night dressed
like that these days. I'm sure their sense of humor isn't as good as it used to
be.

It was several years ago...[maybe 6]
in NJ, way before the
9/11, but it was in a reservoir that was patrolled periodically all week, and
only fishable with a one-day-only permit on weekend days, and not accessible to
me as a NY resident, despite the fact I buy a [Non-res.] NJ fishing license.
To know it was there, as I used to be a NJ resident, was too much to pass up,
as it was sweet, but when the waters get low, even in camo, they spot you.
Check-mate, gave over. They might think they won, but if the winning was based
on the amount of fun and great fishing, I clearly won, hands down. Just isn't worth
getting arrested or a ticket. It has been closed since 9/11 to all, and no
plans to re-open it are in the works, told to me by a extremely reliable
source.

Posted by JOHN G on 2002 PM:
Yeah but Trav, a spring is a whole other animal, it can be located in the middle of a lake, which is essentially unreachable when iced over, unless the ice is thick enough to get out on and icefish...but here, they are talking about free water that is castable from the shore, also , it is salt water fishing which has no closed season for just targeting. the reason they got into the trouble they got into was because they actually went into the property of the Northport plant.... Im sure those casting from the shores outside of the property would not be in trouble....... JOHN G

There is
always Indian Point!!!
Although the USCG might
give you some problems if you stop just off shore from the plant and start
fishing and I know from working at the other power plant in Peekskill that right about now the water
leaving the plant is at least 76 degrees. From shore you may be able to reach
the warm water from China Pier and you will be right in between both plants
discharge at Crystal Bay, Verplank may have another spot just below IP.
Jeff G. where in PA is this warm water discharge? I'm assuming near Harrisburg on the Susky.

John I was refering to
springs as they relate(and occur) to rivers.....not still water.
no frozen water there and are magnets. But it takes some homework to find them.
Jeff's speaking of the well known Susky discharges...no salt there.

JPBass and others.
JP you bring up a very valid point and no...I havent been there since 9/11. It
may be impossible to now to pretend that you are still a little boy sneaking in
to "posted" land to fish as I am sure the security must be a little
tighter than it was before. And I bet that the consequences would be
undesirable to say the least.
I may have to go there this weekend and do a little recon for the gang....I
live fairly close.
PatX I agree with you on the crowds but on warmer days and if you know the
tides you can get out on the bars and get away from the loonies. I have had
great pleasure casting freely to an isolated bar pulling in bass after bass
with an occasionaly fiesty blue to make it interesting while guys at the flow
fished shoulder to shoulder. What I learned from some sharpies years ago is
that fish hold on those bars quite a bit down from the actual flow....the "T"
bar and the "D" bar (based on shape) can be quite productive on a
fair weather day in Feb !!
If its cold for extended periods they tend to hold closer to the actual flow...
I have also seen your posts on the Thames. What holds those fish there all year ? Because for the most part
aside from power plants the sound and its tribs usually are barren of bass in
the winter.
Good post.....never quit fishing guys !!

Yes sir it's on the Susquehanna
river . The warmwater
discharge is about 1 mile below York Haven dam . There is 2 boat ramps below
the dam on both sides of the river . And then its about a mile or so down river
on the west shore side of the Susky . Just look for the steam ..lol There is a
road that takes you there and you can fish from the bank or wade ( at your own
risk ) . But it is wadable . there are a few species of fish to catch as well
smallmouth , largemouth, walleye, musky, hybrid stripers, Titelines ... Oh and
the warmwater does not come from a Nuclear Power plant discharge . So the fish
wont glow in the dark .
Jeff![]()

glow at night!!!
Makes it better when
night fishing you can see to get the hooks out
Jeff,
The only reason I asked was to try to get to know this state much better, being
an old NJ transplant to NY and now a new NY transplant to PA.
Harrisburg is probably a good 3 hours from
me but have been through the area a few times heading to points south and west
(VA, TN, AL & MO). My commuting time to work is about half that so its
within reach on my days off.
