WAMPUS FACE OFF: $enkology
vs. stickology
i met up with L.Ron Senko(aka jefflang BVS) at wampus pond this morning for a face off: his senkos on a gammy vs. my BPS stick-os on XPS hooks... we launch the porta-bote at 6:30 am and both find immediate action...we worked the same outer weedlines that were successful at the BBQ and managed 20+ bass and 1 pickerel in the boat by 9:30... both baits were catching fish, but the stick-o no doubt held up better than the senko... with the sun strong after 10am, the fish turned off for a couple hours but we managed to find a pattern in shoreline cover once some shade hit around 11:30...we worked all the great laydowns along the shady shoreline and managed to put a total of 30+ bass in the boat total for the day... with a lot of nice size, too!...although we didn't count, jeff and i for the most part caught the same number of fish and had a blast out there nailing bass in the middle of august...so for now, the stick-o is looking real good at 3.99 for 20... and fyi, there were 2 gut-hooked fish( 1 for jeff, 1 for me) which were quickly relieved of their hooks with the d-barb tool and released.. every other fish was hooked in the corner of the lip.

Me and Mike in the Portoclam!
Soon as we hit the water we knew it was going to be a good day. Mikes first
cast was slammed (The fish missed the topwater bait) In the first hour we had
10 plus fish all good sized with average over 2 pounds a couple aound 4lb The
Senko and the Senko Rippoff (LOL) where the baits of the day. Soon as the sun
got fully high around 10am the fishing turned off!!!! We got
some takes lost a few pickerils but it was not untill 12:30 Before we got back on them. Mike was putting his
bait in some hard spots right up on shore and Bam he found us a new pattern and
landed the next four fish (This guy has learned alot!!!) I got a few more.
Ended up a GREAT day! Me and Mike have had a Great time getting Skunked
together But 30+ fish made the day even more awsome. All my fish where on
SENKOS not the rip off's. But it looks like BPS did a good job copying a great
bait not 100% but there but close. I will stick with the guy's who inventied
it.

Wampus ??
Where is Wampus?
Great report, both on the fishing, and on the side-by-side fish-off between the
Senko and the Stick-o. Sounds like you two had an awesome day.
While I have thrown a TON of Senkos, and done really well with them, I have
never yet tried the BPS version , yet. How did they compare as far as fall
rate? Does the Senko drop faster? If so, by much?
Were you using the BPS hooks that look like the G-locks, or the round bends? Your
feelings on them? How do they compare in size to Gammies of the same style?
Yeah, I realize I asked alot of questions just now, but always anxious to learn
more, and hone what I know already.
Much thanks !!

Bill: Wampus is a 40 acre
row only "pond" in Armonk, technically a County park, although the
grounds are very limited....boat rentals on the weekends from Memorial through
Labor Day, you can launch your own for 4 bucks, or for 40 bucks you can get a
permit to launch any time....no trollers allowed.......mucho weeds, two
tremendous flats, lily pads and milfoil galore, however, the entire middle
section is 25 feet deep and the far shore is a 45 degree angled tangle of blowdowns
and rocks.....an very good mixture of many bassy patterns in one place...
Mike and Jeff, what a fabulous day there at this time of the year! just
excellent! in the morning, what side did you start out on?

Sounds like a cool spot...
to throw my canoe out on
as a "topwater" and to try to get rid of this huge pile of Senkos I
got. Maybe try a few other tactics too,, depending upon conditions noted[and my
crazy thoughts at the time] at the time. Anyone interested?
Can't go this Sunday, but got a fairly freeable schedule, for important stuff,
like fishing bass. John, you do 'guiding 'there from a front canoe seat[har, har]?
Do you have to be a resident of that county to fish/use it?
Decent, safe parking? Not that I'm driving a "Rolls"{More like a
war-wagon], mind you.

Great job, guys! 30 fish
is a great day and those chunkers int he pics are beauts!
Bill--
Parking is fine and it is a great place for a canoe. I'd be happy to fish with
you, although Gregg, John, Mike, Pete, John and many others would be better
'guides'. I've only fished it once, although I do know a good outer weedline or
two.
It really is a nice little pond with many available patterns, especially in the
morning and evening. Drop me an email if you want to head over there
sometime...

wild bill...yes, i was
using the XPS offset hook which is similar to the G-lock...they are very sharp
and appear to hold up just fine...they seem slightly smaller than the gammy's
and are a bargain at 5 bucks for 25!... the stickos are very similar to the senkos...
they have lots of salt impregnation, but less than the senko which causes them
to drop a little slower...for some silly reason, they pack em in lots of salt,
which rinses right off in one cast...i rinse the whole bag off before i go
fishing cause it makes a mess of my tackle bag..another important thing to note
is that the 6" sticko is the same size as the 5" senko...both are
roughly 5 1/4"... the action on the sticko is excellent; virtually the
same as the senko... i have tried only one other knock-off, which is from catch
'em lures, which i am not impressed with.... one thing i love about the sticko
is that it holds up much better than the senko...although it will fall apart
after a few fish because of the high salt content, the extra plastic helps it
stay on the hook on those really hot days when the senko just seems to melt off
the hook...i was getting so damn frustrated having to change the senko
constantly even when i wasn't catching fish!... a few aggressive casts can rip
a texposed senko right off the hook, no problem!....
one negative to the sticko is that the color selection is limited... i was
using the green pumpkinseed with black flake while jeff was using the usual watermelon
w/ black flake
now, i am not bashing the senko...i still love that beautiful salty stick of a
bait and i totally understand why jeff or anyone else wouldn't want to use
another... once you build confidence in a bait, it helps with your fishing...it's
just that the sticko sells for $2 for 10 on sale compared to $6-7 bucks for 10
of the senko...plus, i go through less than 1/2 of the amount of stickos than i
would a senko, which drops the price down another half!...i bought 10 bags of senkos
a few weeks ago and spent 70 bucks... they're all gone now... in my mind, 50 stickos
would have been just as effective and would have cost $10!!... so from now on
the sticko is my go-to soft jerkbait!...call me names, look at me funny, but i'm
the one with the extra moola to spend on important stuff like beer!
john... from the boat rentals area, we worked the left side weedy part of the
pond, concentrating on the deeper weedlines, then moved to the shore with the laydowns
once it got some shade.
fishing is good!

Awesome day!
For you guys to stack those numbers this time of year!. I think I'll order some of those sticko's and make my buddies use them while I use the real deal, lol. Once I'm convinced, I'm in. You guys mentioned a D-barb tool in your post. Can you provide a little more detail on that puppy?. It kills be to gut hook a fish and spend so much time trying to release it only to ultimately cut the line. Thanks!

Great report guys. I need
to get down and try that little wampus hole.
I've found the same thing in the little pond, stik o works about the same as
the senko but holds up a little better. All the extra salt is a pain but other
than that, a pretty good bait.
Mark,
I should get the boat registered next week, we can hit wampus one evening or on
a weekend soon if you want.
