Swinging Bridge Report!
Well, another first timer....and another nice looking water, with similar results.....
Swinging Bridge is 100 miles from Mt Vernon! quite a ride, and the end is a bit twisty and narrow, however, the state ramp is in pretty good shape and lets you on in roughly the middle of the lake....
looking at the rudimentary map that we had, directly North of us to the left was a large point, more like a peninsula.....so we headed in that direction and fished the two primary points of both sides and the secondary points going a ways into the cove, this being the largest cove on the lake.....
after that, we came out and headed towards the two private Marinas and fished docks and such for a while....
our next plan was to go all the way south to the Dam, and then we worked both shorelines practically down to the launch area, both sides......
in a word: we covered a lot of ground!
having Gregg and Scott E on the boat was a boon...besides the great company and laughs, it enabled us to vary our attack: at all times, we had one person hitting right up the bank, one at mide depth and one parallel or deeper to the boat....this way, we effectively covered water from 1 foot to about 25 or so all the way down the main shorelines.....occasionally I would intentionally drift out into 30 and above looking for schools of fish, which we never found all day long.....
we were beaten off the water at 3:30 by some unrelenting heavy rains that weren't letting up.....
in summation, we put 19 bass into the boat and ALL of them small or shorts...in addition I blade baited up 3 sunfish that gave a better fight than the bass, one weighed a POUND!!!! Gregg will post the picture......
we really tried a lot of things: the mainstay was green tubes...however, as usual, brewers hit the water, and blade baiting and a lot of cranking with divers and a bit of spinnerbaiting when the wind was up and over some rocky strewn flats.......
the tube bite was a subtle one, barely drag it, they didnt want too much action on it......
Gregg has a bunch of pictures with some representative fish, including this 3 incher I caught on the blade bait!!! LOL.......
this water has a ton of potential, and I look forward to fishing it in more favorable times.......
not an easy ride, but a nice looking water........

Awesome, John.
I fished Swinging Bridge last year with 'HalfBassed' who you may remember. We had a ball, and it's great that I can actually relate to your experience - the main point and cove near the launch, the HUGE sunfish there, etc. Pretty neat lake. Like you, we caught a lot of dinks - a mixed bag of LM and SM, but I had one 3.1 pound Largemouth I caught on a 3" Senko just off an emergent branch. Not a lot of cover in that reservoir, so we fished everything that looked different in even the slightest ways. It paid off.
Did you get a lot of Smallies?
Tight Lines...

Rob: there were no weeds whatsoever today....found it hard to see what locales LM would favor if any...our ratio was 18 smallies to 1 LM.....
also, after we had been on the water about an hour, we had a helluva wind come up, better than 15 plus and that complicated things...in addition to that there were big algae slicks just about everywhere.....
what time of the year did you fish it with Butch? my overall feeling is that when you can fish a new water with the conditions that were present and walk away with that many fish regardless of the size, then the Lake can produce excellently under more favorable times of the year...as such, I look forward to that.....

We caught
19 and missed a few more for some decent action for the day. A little longer trip but would like to fish this place again.

John, Grag & Scott, Thanks for the report. I had the exact same results fishing that lake 3 days straight. Sept 5,6 &7. I was fortunate enough to catch 3 keepers on the first practice day and unfortunate to catch 0 keepers for a 2 day tournament.
Beautiful lake. I would fish it again.
John, 100 miles from Mt Vernon. And your about 80 miles from where I'm comming from. Long ride to catch some nice sunnies & a few shorts. LOL Are we sick or what?

Nicky: I was thinking and talking about the trip you Long Islanders have to take while on the boat, don't know how you guys do it!! the driving wiped me more than the fishing and controlling the boat in the wind.....
Buddy: we were going to hit the Marinas and above them when the heavy rains began!!! we would have loved to see that section of the lake, that will have to be for next time...for a first time out, we covered an awful lot of ground and would have seen that area also if weather cooperated a little bit more......
I am aware of the hybrids......we did a bit of slowly motoring around the deep water between the shorelines heading towards the dam but couldn't find any accumations of fish on the sonar......

Nice report guys.
I can see that a few of you are interested in fishing this lake again, so therefore I must aid and abet whenever necessary.
Being VERY familiar with SB, I will be glad to show anyone around this beautiful body of water. I might even show you a couple of good spots to fish too. LOL

Sorry for the late reporting
As always I enjoyed the day with my two friends John and Gregg and a much needed trip to get me out on the water again, just so much going on between work and house.
They maybe were mostly small fish but a good sign that larger smallies must roam that water, it is just a matter of learning "the lay of the land", I will be fishing these waters next season more often for sure.
Gregg, if you could bring that map to Whaley I would like to see it!!!
