Small mouth question
Ok guys i have been
thinking about fishing cuz i cant go...and here is something i happened to
realize.....2 years ago when i first started fishing Kensico ( or any water for
that matter ) i didnt have a boat, and didnt even know what a bass was ( i knew
about striped bass though ) anyway, i met a man who fished every saturday religiously..right
under the bridge...and we became friends and he taught me alot of things about
trout fishing. We would target trout...using 4-6 lbs line, leaders, and small #
6 gammie hooks, and ofcourse "SAWBELLIES" now i went fishing almost
every saturday, and would you guys believe not once did he or i catch a
largemouth...it was always smallies. We had a leader and a sliding
sinker...therefore the bait was taken very deep ( its actually 70 ` deep where
we were casting )
My conclusion: the trout were all the way at the bottom, the smallmouth were
just above, and the largemouth were on top....thats why 80 % of the fish i caught
this year at that location on senkos were largemouth....my bait wasnt reaching
the smallies...I will be using blade baits, hair jigs, and senko jigs a ton
this year at that location......Please let me know if there are other baits i
should also use. thanx VIC.
P.S. this year i will have a depth finder and a thermometer...my goal is to
catch twice as many large fish as last year..and employing new techniques.

try rat-l-traps to get down there...thats what i would say

Crankbaits might be worth
a shot. Bass at times suspend around those bridge supports. Try this get a pair
of pliers by slightly bending the nose ring you can "tune" a crankbait
to run to the right( takes a little trail and error) cast it out in-line with
those big stone supports when you retrive it will be banging into the wall the
whole lenth. That should get you a strike

Vic, are you wading??? Or fishing from shore under the bridge??? Tell me about the flow of the water, color?? and depth. I know that if a largemouth is hungry, he will come down and get that sawbelly. Are you sure that there are largemouth bass there??? I would believe that water around most bridges that I fish isn't all that deep unless you are fishing on a reservoir. I've had largemouth and smallmouth come up from 20 feet to hit a spook on the surface(Robbie....no spook jokes).LOL

If the Smallies are
indeed suspending, then they are likely doing so because of the presence of
food, particularly schools of baitfish. "Sawbellies" (Alewives), are
a favorite of Smallies, so go with diving cranks which mimic these. ½-ounce
white jigs will penetrate down there in a hurry, as would a heavier weighted
white tube. I'm sure you will find success.
Tight Lines...

e.w.,kensico is a reservoir in white plains with some extremely deep spots.there are spots way over 100 feet deep in that reservoir.if yankees rule is talking about the bridge that i think he is off rt.129,then there may only be trout and smallies there.there is a bridge there that all the trout fisherman fish from the shore and catch nice trout from, especially in the spring.i really have'nt heard of anybody catching many lagemouths there.

Dodge that bridge is on Rt.22
The bridge marks where Kensico Lake and Rye Lake meet. From the shore spot he's
talking about your casting into 60' of water. He now fishes it in a boat and I
hope to join him this year
....and yes there are LM & SM there
everything is there. Between the shore spot and the first stone support is the
deepest channel and Angler aid maps marks and old road bed and stream bed and
part of the migration route for sure. Don't worry I haven't given up a big
secrets here, during the season there is ALWAYS someone fishing on that
spot, everybody and their uncle know that spot.

Dodge, do you think it is possible that largemouth do not frequent that area because they find better comfort factors elsewhere??? It definately is possible but in all likelyhood they at times meander through the area. 60ft deep. In all probablity, the largemouth are on the bottom with the other fish around the pilings. I don't do much deep, deep water bass fishing.

Rt 129???????????
Dodge -- When did they
move Kensico ??
We`ll have to talk before we meet at Titicus !!! LOL
Vic is talking about the bridge on rt22. The area to the east on the south shore
, as well as around to the west side is relatively shallow. Both areas are
loaded with L/M . The deeper sections as well as the bridge area has plenty of smallmouths.
Naturally the s/m move in to the shallows , especially in the eve. The l/m are
often found around the bridge, but more of a hit and miss.
The really deep area`s tend to hold BIG Lake trout. The big L/m
are probably just passing thru, or after the schools of bait fish that tend to
hold around the bridge. Pete

Fish finder lures
A couple of great lures
that normally produce some good deep water results are:
Rattle trap: Either make long casts and count them down at variable depths in
the water column or they can also be very effective in a vertical jig pattern.
I prefer silver with a blue back in deep water. The Rattle Trap can be a good -
go to confidence bait and some people call it the good old fish finder.
Silver Buddy: This is a very productive bait and can be used on fan casting
patterns or the best results are vertical jig patterns. One tip for you on
getting the best results out of a Silver Buddy: Let the jig free fall to the
bottom and watch your line as it falls ( fish may pick it up on the drop and
your line will either move sideways, slow down or speed up - stay focused).
Now you have it on the bottom, bring it up 1 to 3' and stop; with your rod
either level with the water (90 degrees) or slightly down ( 120 degrees); lift
your rod at a medium speed ( don't lift it too fast - you will feel the lure
vibrate, but you can over do it and in my experience, ripping it doesn't
produce as well) until you feel the Silver Buddy begin to vibrate and stop
lifting immediately, pause and let it drop = repeat multiple times. Now move up
about 3 to 6' and repeat; I also drop the lure back down and repeat the entire
process over - this will often attract fish from a distance.
If you have electronics, increase your zoom to 4x or 6x and you will be able to
see the fish, determine their depth and you will also be able to see your
Silver Buddy. Now that you are tuned into the fish and your bait, it's time to
focus on your screen and entice them into hitting your jig.
I do this on Winni in NH and have caught lot's of smallies in depths down to
70'. When you get a hit on this type pattern its a real feeling of
accomplishment.
The key to success in deep water presentations is PRACTICE_PRACTICE_PRACTICE
Bink; if your reading this--that's another one of those things we are doing out
in the middle of the broads when people drive by and wonder if we are nuts
fishing out in the middle of a 7 x 11 mile open water section.
Hope this helps,
John/NH
