Ridiculous!

the other day i picked up the recent edition of that magazine, "the fisherman". their section (albeit very small) about freshwater fishing mentioned that someone caught a 10 lb. bass either at ronkonkoma or in the swamp across from bavarian inn (i forget which). anyway, while it sounds great and would be great, i really, really, really doubt that someone caught a 10lb. bass here on long island. i can probably believe up to 7 or 8 lbs, but 10 lbs could be really stretching it. what do you all think?

I read an article in that magazine from last summer that talked of a 10 lb. bass coming from a lake in Ct. They didn't say which one. There was a picture of the bass and it was huge. I don't know how big, but it looked to defintely be over 8 lbs. The article quoted the tackle shop owner who says it was weighed on a certified scale.

If there was a 10 lber taken in CT. I'm sure one could exist in the right body of water in LI...

Yes there are....

I've been living near the Ronkonkoma Lake for years now I have cought a 9bls large mouth just last week. and about two years ago my buddy and I where fishing He was using a saltwater pole for shore and as god as our witness he a 22'' inch large mouth bass, so when someone tells me that there are 10 pound bass there I believe it. The lake is about 1 mile wide and in some spots it could get as deep as 30ft...

Posted by HugeFish4 on 2002 PM:

A 22 inch Largemouth, weighs nowhere near 10lbs.

I didn't say that, that one wieghts 22lbs. I'm saying that there are big fish in the lake.

Posted by theole34 on 2002 PM:

ronko goes to about 64 feet at it's best measure on many cross runs i have made. have caught some really decent bass in there.. once again, most people wouldn't belv where or how, so i don't really go to into it. it can be a rewarding fishery, or a verrrry humbling one.

my bet is... there is a ny state record in there. pretty big water for LI. pretty deep spots, and very well oxygenated water. plenty of decent size baitfish for growth. a really featureless bottom, with schooling bass. southernmost point in NY for fishing.

10lbr last week?? i'd have to see photo, or the fish to really ease the doubt. 9lbr last week? have a photo or measurements on the fish? i'd be very interested to see it. it is highly possible, but you'd be crazy not to photo it!!!

measuring the fish... a 25" fish is about 9.5-10lbs if you have a girth of 19"s. that's a big a$$ bass. the weight drops off very sharp when the length decreases a little. a 22" fish of same girth (19) is a 7.5 fish. these are approximate, but really good gauges of weight from length and girth. i am no expert, but many people will tell you... many fisherman tend to overestimate weight.

i have fished with an idiot savant (to remain nameless) that can guess a fish within an ounce everytime.. i always overestimated, and have since learned a good measure of fish by eye from his repeated correct guesses. i have seen many guys call a 2.5r a 5lb fish, as i am sure many others have seen too.

photo some of these beasts and share them. we have some really tough critics that will measure thumb and ear size and match against the average man.. and come up with some good weight calls. it's fun and educational.

look at the bassmasters lunker page..... i tend to laugh at that.

i repeat
ronkonkoma is a dead fishery... no fish in ther at all!!!! don't waste another minute there!! move on. or invite me.

Up to six pounds or so I almost think I could make a living betting on how much a bass weighed. It's something I can just do. However, to back up what Robbie says over six it gets harder and harder to say nothing of the fact that if it were close wouldn't we all like to believe that fish we just caught really did weigh ten pounds.

9 & 10 pound bass are very BOLD statements. I am not challenging anybodies claims here, but I would suggest that if you are going to make such a bold statement be prepared to provide substantiation. Not that you have to. But if you don't have it it might be better just keeping it to yourself.

I'd like to think there are 10 pounders out there butttt..
You need substantiation or else its a hallucination...lol

Nicky has worded it perfectly!, I wouldnt dream of coming on here without several pictures, including the one where he is hanging from the scale, if I had ever caught such a monster.....however, it is not impossible, that is for sure......on any of my posts, I do not list a weight unless it was actually weighed...... and I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with Robbie, there are many people who call 3 pounders five pounds....they are not lying! simply exagerrating, from lack of endless actual weighings which would then set them more on track....... These 10+ pound bass ARE around. A few years back, a couple 10 pounders were electro-shocked from Lamoka/Waneta Lakes in Central NY. Just this spring, a bass over 10 pounds was shocked in Silver Lake, right next door to me!! Along with that one, a couple over 8 pounds and several over 6 were also shocked. But I'll be damned if I ever had one over 5 on my line there, but they are there.

I have always believed, and still do, that every good bass lake has a state record swimming around in it, somewhere.

I agree wholeheartedly. There are big fish out there the largest bass I have caught was 19.5 lbs 42" long!!!! Oh did I forget to mention that it was a STRIPED bass. But in the way of lg mouths and smallies the biggest so far was 6.5 lbs and he was 23 1/2" long. And I have proof! But without substantiation for all we know it was a 12" bass with a belly full of lead.

Like Noel said, those big ones are out there, just tough to get on the end of your line. You don't get to be 10lbs. by gobbling up every senko that comes by!

Posted by earthworm77 on 2002 AM:

First let me say that I pride myself in finding big bass on LI. I've caught a ton...literally. A 22" fish is a great fish but a 22" fish is not even close to 10lbs or 9 for that matter. It may touch 6lbs. The problem is that most guys haven't caught a bass over 3lbs so they guestimate. To most, an 18" bass is a 5lber. They have no clue. I can't figure why the Fisherman mag, reported a 10lber being that it was obviously illegal pre season time...the reports are a few weeks behind. Next....no chance that fish came from the overflow. There are 3 places that come to mind...that I will talk about on LI where I know there are bonifide 10lbers swimming.......Ronkonkoma is definately one. Anyone remember Bill Doc Bartick???? He took an 11 in the late 70's. My Dad knows him and perhaps I can get some info out of him on it or at least a photo....next...Wildwood.....you may get shot fishing there but I've seen some giants including a 9-14 I took about 6 yrs ago. The last lake is Blydenburgh. I saw a photo of a ten cuaght on a flyrod about 10yrs ago. Although I've taken two 9's and a host of 7's and 8's from the Peconic, I do not think there is a 10 there. Just a gut feeling...I may be wrong. There are also a few other ponds on LI that I know have some tremendous fish with a 10 being a legitimate possiblity.

After thinking about this thread further, I hope you don't take the replies the wrong way.

I see it like this, a 10 pounder is like the Holy Grail, and all of us "F'd" up bass heads are in search of her. So naturally, jealousy will ensue (just human nature) when somebody beats you to the summit. Like saying "I climbed
Mt. Everest" But have no proof.

There are 2 kinds of bass fisherman regarding this subject. And we have both on this board. The first and more common are the ones that love to share (brag) about their exploits. (nothing wrong with that, and I consider myself part of that group). And those that could give 2 craps about who knows what fish they caught.

However group 1 fishermen should come up with proof (photo, or certified weigh in). And group 2 should be happy keeping their accomplishments low key and to themselves.

Hey, but that's just my opinion. What do I know.

Nick

Lake Ronkonkoma huh...I went to a wedding last year and the place was on the shore of the lake (forget the name of the place). It's a nice size lake and I never fished it but I didn't see anything from shore that would make me think that 10lbres are in there. No islands and from what I've read little or no structure in that lake. It sounds like a big soup bowl. Not to mention it must be a recieve alot of pressure from you L.I. guys... Just my 2cents....
Now that river that I've saw Earthy swimming around in looks really good and I bet it doesn't freeze for the winter making the bass in there year round feeders...I'd like to give that place a shot one day..........

No I'm not afended about that I guess that I could be a esteanted to much. I don't know about the 9bls.,but I was there when we measured that 22'' bass. I don't have any photos that was couple of years ago. But If you ever went to the old bait shop before it became Ronkonkoma outfitters there was a old guy that owned the place he had about 10-15 photo of big bass that came out of the lake over the years. I still say that there are big bass in the lake and the overflow.

Posted by earthworm77 on 2002 AM:

There most certainly are big bass in Ronko...maybe a ten. It would be the first place I went to to look for one. The overflow...........no chance!!!! I've taken fish up to about 6lbs there but very few and far between.

Robbie,

How did you manage to catch anything on a Spirex 4000 and an Ugly Stick?!

Seriously, I still use a Spirex 4000! Works fine for me! Plenty of 3lb+ fish caught on that combined with a cheap Shimano Stimula 6' rod.

i guess the thing that threw me so much about the mention of "10lb. bass" was that it was mentioned so non-chalant. it just sounded very routine, like catching a 1 or 2 lb. bass. i am sure there are some really, realy big bass in there and other places on the island, but again, if someone caught something that big i would think it would rate more than "....a 10 lb. bass was caught". actually, now i'm thinking i should keep my mouth shut. maybe it was just a misprint and the article meant to say a 1lb. bass. oh well, oops! nowi'm gonna go and catch my ten-pounder.

Posted by Scott C on 2002 PM:

This is a great post.....I was away for the last few days and I have to throw my 2 cents in.
I have heard about this 10# bass.
This is how the story was reported to me.

A man saw a kid casting at a fish at Specks Pond. The kid told the guy not to spook his fish and proceeded to throw everything at it with no luck. The fish was snagged eventually and when the kid pulled it in the man ran back to his car to get a scale. Supposedly the fish weighed 13 lbs on this scale. The story and the scale (not the fish or a picture) were brought into a local tackle store where the scale was calibrated using a known 10# weight. It was right on. The fish was reported as 10 for reasons I dont know. The man (who aparently is a officer of the law) pointed to a hefty bass picture on the wall and swore that the bass the kid "caught" could have swallowed this bass easily. It was reported in Fisherman the way you all read it. Why I dont know.
Wacky story.
The Fisherman in my opinion is a decent paper but...they will report anything that they are told basically. And they alter or get the story screwed up at times.
I caught a 20 lb striper last year and reported it at a reliable tackle store. By the time it was printed in the Fisherman and North East Saltwater I had caught it in 2 different places simultaneously and using 2 different methods.....
Pictures are worth a thousand words....
By the way.....there are NO bass
Lake Ronkonkoma and I got the pictures to prove it.

I was with a guy prefishing candy last year and he caught a 8 lb 9 oz LMB so they are out there. There is some golf course out there with a 12 lb bass in it too I would bet, just nobody is tring to catch her( just keeps geting shelled with small white balls). The larger fish gets that way for a reason they don't get caught and grow to a large size. The 6lbers + end up on some guys wall and never reach there full size. The bigger a bass is the less often it will eat thus giving us a small window of time in which to catch them.

hey scott

by standards of weighing with a ruler, and not knowing the girth..

that fish is a fatty. 21.5" could be a 5- 5.5 fish.

carry a scale now.

still a beautiful fatty ya have there. great photo.

Lot

Posted by theole34 on 2002 AM:

yeah that is the lakeside slope of the bavarian hole. great spot for crankin' and jiggin'. chart the hole with a few markers, and work it for an hour or so. it fills with grass by mid july, and then it is great fishing. most guys move on when they hit the grass. not i.

As far as grass and weeds go if you pass them up your passing up the best fishery. One fact stands when it comes to bass. where there is structure there are bass! Even if you cant see them. It is a proven fact that if you take 10 bass. Put them in a barren tank they will swim around endlessly. However if you put one small rock in the tank. They will all gather around the rock even crowding each other to do so.

I find that if you want to catch large bass you have to even the odds, by fishing the lake more often. So what are you waiting for get out there and fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
