TalkingDo you have a 'nemesis' body of water?

First off, let me say that this thread is really more humorous than serious.

Here in
Western New York, we have some great waters to fish, and bass are abundant, both Smallies and Largemouths.

But I tell ya, Walton Park Pond, a small pond only a few acres in size and a great 'after work' place has pretty much eluded me. I have fished it alone and with buddies about a dozen times now, and I finally caught my first bass ever there last week, fishing with "Sea Jack" John Siejak. I caught the feisty 6 incher on a 3" Senko, wacky rigged on a size #2 EWG hook (not 2/0, but 2). Some claim 6 pounders are wandering around in there.

I have thrown the book there, but that pond just eludes me. I have seen good, big bass hooked by everyone I've fished with there, including a 3 pounder caught by John Siejak.

I'm not blaming my skills, but like many things in life, reality defies logic.

Do any of you have any particular body of water that confounds you? Sound off here and let's hear your stories.

Tight Lines...

Lake Ronkonkoma

Caught tons of bass there last year including my 2 largest Smallie and LM. Caught nice Walleye as well.

Can not catch fish there this year. Period.

I will try and crack the code this fall though. I love that lake in the fall.

nemesis

Yes, there is a small lake by me called wickham lake. I have seen nice fish come out of there right before my eyes, but i usually have gotten a single bass in the 2 # range. Recently, i was even skunked there. ugh!

So i guess the more i've gotten to know the lake, the worse i've done! :-)

for years it was the mohawk river. i accused people of tying on hair jigs just to mess with me. for two long weeks i fished for 3 smallies under a pound.

i continuined my largemouth ways the next year. when i found my first school. i forgot about trying to fish like a largemouth fisherman, now its my most productive water.

never was the water!!!....... all me.

Yeah, Tony...

I remember it was like your first or second cast on Walton Park Pond with that Phil's yellow hair jig and you had a 3 pounder on.

Everyone has felt good fish there, except ME!

You suck...

The hudson below coxsakie. I have fished it so many times, and caught only it's bad side. Aside from a bunch a smallies, and a few slop hogs, i just havent hit the fish in the numbers that i know are in there.

Guys who have problems at Ronko, don't sweat it. If the lake had any cover or structure you would catch fish. The lake does have some big fish but they are in more of a palaegic style than any other place you fish. Add to that the water level is down approx. 80 ft from the shoreline and you can see why it sucks this season. Don't fret and don't waste your time worrying about it, it will be back!!

I never worry about that lake. Its a natural cycle.

Can you elaborate on this a bit ?

They are open water fish, often if you find one, they tend to be together in the depths. This may not be the exact definition of palaegic but it is close.

I'm pretty persistant when it comes to fishing. If I come across a pond or lake that stumps me, I will continue to return to the same body of water untill I figure it out.

Ok...now that I know what that means I agree with you.

Should be interesting when they put all those stumps in. I am betting on an fun Fall-Winter season. The best fish I caught there was Nov-Mar odd as that is.

AngryTHE POTOMAC RIVER

OUTSIDE OF DOING REALLY WELL THERE IN A REDMAN TOURNAMENT BACK IN 1997,FOR THE LIFE OF ME,I CANT SEEM TO CATCH BASS THERE,THE LAST 3 TOURNAMENTS THERE WERE IN EARLY APRIL AND MAN OOOO MAN,ITS AS TOUGH A PLACE TO FISH AS YOU CAN IMMAGINE,PLUS THE ROUGHNESS OF THE RIVER DONT AIDE IN ANY WAY EITHER!

hmmm....I'm trying to think of lakes where I've caught the least amount of bass....I wouldn't say they would be my nemesis waters, but certain ones are tough to find success over long periods of the year. Washington Lake and Wappinger Lake (although I know they've got some terrific bass in them) have been on the difficult side many times. Wappinger Lake has much better structure than Washington though.
Also,
Kissena Lake in Queens is tough - although it's only a rather small public park. But I'm sure at the right times and conditions they'd all be fabulous.

Bad Luck Lake.

With out a doubt up here in the capitol district I would have to say the Martin Dunham Res. is the worst place I've ever fished on a regular basis. The place is so beautiful, and lots of rocks for SMB's, but I ( and alot of other people ) can't get a bite. puddlejumper.

I second that, and i agree with puddle

it would be too easy for me to say Lillinonah, but it would be true, because I HAVE had exellent days in the past at that water, just a bunch of mysterious nothings the last couple of times....

why even Mahopac has been much harder for me this summer compared to the last couple of years....

I think even one of your favorite waters can become a mystery certain seasons....

I believe "palaegic" refers to fish that inhabit the top of the water colum and feed on or near the surface. Usually more of a salt water term describing Tuna, billfish, and sometimes shark.

Or fish living in open waters, away from shore, as Craig described.

Well that is Lake Ronko alright. There is nowhere those fish can really go right now except open water. With a kayak on 270 acres up to 65 feet deep is ALOT of open water. But I am up for the challenge....look for reports in the fall when I go hunting for smallmouth !!
