License question and
opinion
Once again we hear the
State of
Also , does anyone know how long fishing laws have
been in effect in this state without ANY changes to them ? I heard the DEC is
looking into some changes down the road and that's why we see more waters in NY
having extended bass seasons and catch and release dates other than the
traditional opening and closing days .

Every
year there area few changes...usually not enough to get crazy about.
HOWEVER!! this year there are quit a few POSSIBLE
changes across th board.
go to the NYSDEC web site and the whole list is there.
you can also e-mail the DEC with your comments on
individual proposals.
Ther is no mention of the change in liscence fee.

Here is what I pay every
year in order to enjoy my two favorite past times, hunting and fishing:
Sportsman's: $31.00
Bow Stamp: $11.00
Muzzleloader: $11.00
2nd Season Deer: $11.00
Duck stamp (Fed.) $15.00
Grand total: $81.50
This does not include any of the license fee's I pay
for out of state or
In short, I still think it's the best money I spend all year. What an
incredible state to live in. World class fishing for bass,
walleye, pike, trout and salmon within 15 minutes of my house. Hunting
land's that most sportsman would die for. A DEC that
does a hell of a good job managing the these lands and
fisheries. What more can we ask for?
I fished with Chris M. at the Kueka get together.
Chris is from PA. He told me straight out, "Fred, you don't know how lucky
you are to live around here. In PA, we have nothing like this." And you
know what? He's right.
We spend more then $80 going out with a women for a night. Add up the dinner,
drinks, movie's or whatever, We probably spend more. To spend the same amount for a whole season in our woods and on our
lakes? Fine with me.
I LOVE
Fred

I would pay because I

NYBass members should NOTE: when you
purchase the Big Game license, it will include the Small Game for a total cost
of $19 -- so you dont need to buy both. Small Game
only is $16. More importantly, the fishing license is going from $14 to $19.
Non-resident fishing is going from $35 to $40. ALSO NOTE: these are only
proposed.

I don't really consider our
license fees extraordinary. I generally get a sportsmen's license and turkey
permit. I think it comes to less than $35.00. What are the license fees in some
of the other states close to us like, NJ, CT, PA?

NY has been talking about
raising license fees to $20 for about three years now. I wish they would quit
talking about it and just do it, because by the time they do, it will need to
be more anyway.
I would not mind seeing it raised to $20, especially if more is done for our
sport of bass fishing. Our state is wonderful in its trout stocking programs, muskies hatcheries, walleye stocking and management, but
very little is done for bass. As time goes on, some of our lakes and rivers
need more attention in the way of stocking and better management.
I just looked, and

I go for the NY, Jersey
and Conn licenses, that comes to Seventy something
right there, then I have the Westchester County and Taconic permits that comes
to another 65, so I am going for almost 150 just in licenses and permits for
fishing.....money well spent, if I was still cartopping
I would go for the Harriman also..... JOHN G

Here are the PA
license fees.
In PA I pay $16 for a
resident fishing license and $5 for a trout stamp which is required to fish for
trout.
To hunt I pay $20 for my general hunting license.
$20 for my furtaker (trapping)
$16 for archery.
$11 for muzzleloader.
$6 for a doe tag.
Clearly I pay more to hunt and trap than I do to fish in PA but as many of you
pointed out, both are real bargains.
I just came back from the Harrisburg sports show where I saw tens of thousands
of sportsmen dropping hundreds (or many thousands) of dollars on clothing,
calls, resorts and lodges, fishing gear and just plain garbage yet these same
sportsmen bitch about license fees.
There is another thread up right now about the "reasonably priced"
BPS Extreme rods (which I own two of). These things sell for $100 or roughly 5
years worth of fishing license fees.
As Fred pointed out, we'll easily pay $80 or more to take a girlfriend out on
the weekend (or for those of us with families we'll avoid spending too much on
our girlfriends) yet whine about license fees.
Noel, you're point about services is well taken but I think that most fisheries
managers would argue that bass are harder to manage and tend to be at the mercy
of the fishery itself. I doubt that stocking would have much impact on most
waters. Fish structures and things of that nature might have an impact on some
waters.
The truth is that even if you just considered the public access sites that are
provided by the DEC your license dollars are well spent.

Frankly, I feel even
better now that I know a PA DEC officer (or their version of) has to pay $94 a
season to do the same things I do!
In regards to GangGreens nice post about valentines day, it was so heartwarming, I decided to take my
troublesome girlfriend out for a night of fine wine, dining, and roses and try
to salvage the relationship.
Of course the new Bass Pro Marine catalog arrived sortly
thereafter, and I realized that money could be better spent on a new pedestal
seat, pole holders, 12ga marine wire and some waterproof decking for the boat
I'm refurbishing. Hello Bass Pro, bye bye troublesome
girlfriend. Looks like I''ll be spending my valentines day laying fiberglass instead of laying...

Compare and contrast:
My boat vs my ex-girlfriend:
1) My boat doesn't care if I'm on another boat.
My ex got pissed if I was on another woman.
Winner: Boat
2) My boat doesn't care if I leave it outside in the rain.
My ex did. Boat wins again.
3) My friends enjoy my boat.
They couldn't stand my ex. Boat
4) My boat never asked me "what are you
thinking".
My ex never shut the @%&@ up. Boat
5) My boat knows we have a future together.
My ex made a bad assumption. Boat
6) My boat requires alot of
costly accesories.
So did she. Push
7) It takes alot to find
another boat.
There's lots of pretty women out there. Hmmmm...
That's it. I'm keeping the boat and finding a new women.
Maybe I'll find an ex-model who owns a Pizza Hut and a liquor store. Both right on the water. With a nice dock.
If anybody knows of one, please ask her to give me a call. And send a picture
of the dock.

Money
well spent.......
I look at it this way the
fee for my sportsmans license is money well spent,
even though I have not hunted for about 5 years I still keep buying the sportsmans license, just in case I decide I want to head
back out to the woods for either small or big game hunting.
I don't see the license fee as being a big expense, not when guys spend
hundreds on rods and reels at a drop of a hat. I drop a few hundred or thousand
on the sport every year, starting with my license, permits, rods, reels, line,
lures, gas to get to the lake and many other things.

do know the type of person that you are talking about.im
sure there are the guys who will bitch like a women about the price.i also think that it will weed out the fisher men who
think that they know it all,and that they are the
best thing that has happened to fishing since the SENKO!! i
for one would not mind them raising the peice up to $
30 i have owned a life time permit for a while now so
they can raise it up as much as they want
