Hudson River Stripers

Looks like they are coming in from this report I found:

3/17/02 Tappan Zee Bridge Willard Bierwas

Fished the south side of the bridge from
6:30 AM until about 11:30 AM on the
incoming tide.
There were three other boats in the same area, seems like everyone was into
the fish. The Stripers were feeding in spurts.
I had several doubles and one triple working four rods by myself. Water
temperature was a cold 42.3 degrees.
Bait today was bloodworms, I had only only one fish on cut bunker.
Almost all of the Stripers were between 17" and 22" in length with the
largest fish of the day at 26".

TalkingSoon but not quite yet......still to early!!!

Huge,

The stripers have become a bit more active this month but this is not the report I want to see yet, those fish are resident or juvinille fish that stay in the river year round. Right now the main school is in the
Raritan Bay and NY Harbor as I have had a few reports of bigger fish being caught there.

Once the river temps turn between 46 and 50 degrees thats when the fish will start to move north in there spawning run, as they move north they may hang around an area and stall until the water gets closer to the temps that are ideal for them to spawn, between 54 to 58 degrees. Lets hope for this temp to be reached slowly as if the river warms quickly they will move north fast, spawn and be gone within a few days time.

Stripers unlike largemouth and smallmouth bass are not driven by photoperiod to spawn, water temperature drives them to spawn, if the river temps rise above 60 degrees in the river it can be detrimental to the eggs and fry, as few will hatch and it has been found that any fry that do, usually do not survive past their first year.

Another thing that also factors into this is the movement of herring up river, during the spawn herring is the choice meal of the striped bass, so if the school of hearing stall so will the stripers. The report I read last night had them still chasing schools of bunker in the bay in the Keyport NJ area, not a real good sign of movement north.

The current river temps in the low 40s may rise a bit over the next few days as air temps will be in the mid 40s and cloud cover helps to warm the river a bit overnight but by the weekend clouds will give way to sun and lower temps, overnight this may drop river temps into the high 30s. Once river temps stabilize a bit more into the mid 40s you will see more reports and bigger fish being reported to our south.

I didn't mean to imply that the cows were here, simply that some fish are showing up. This morning, when I came across the bridge, I did see a lone boat between the bridge and Piermont.

Guys,

Since a thread was started regarding these awesome fish, I figured I'd sneak a question in here. How do you fish for these things?. I'm 4 miles from the
Hudson. If the reports start getting hot, how would you guys go about trying to catch one of these 40 Lb. Behemoths?.

Thanks,
Gary

Talking

Gary,

How will you be fishing for them from shore or from a boat?

If in a boat you can try drifting eels or live herring. From shore try using blood worms or cut bait like herring, bunker or butterfish on a fish finder rig.

You can use you freshwater tackle but I would recommend a heavier outfit such as a spinning reel made for saltwater and a rod to match such as a 9 to 10' surfcasting rod, spool the reel up with some good quality line like Power Pro braid no less than 30lbs.

Fishing from a boat is your best bet to hook up with a big striper from shore it is a matter of time and luck and weeding through the small fish as well as the junk fish like white perch, catfish and eels but when you do hook up with a keeper hang on!!!

John, thanks for the update and as usual , you did a great job....keeping track of stripers and their movements is very important to NYBass.com...... JOHN G

If I recall correctly You are in Fishkill. Since I am a real close Neighbor I could take you to A great place not too far from where we live to do some shore fishing for Stripers. Last year I was fortunate enough to catch a 34 inch 16 pounder form the place I have in mind. I would be glad to show you the spot. It is a small park with some great shore access. as far as tackle I would suggest a heavy Spinning reel and a Rod at least 9 foot long. 30 pound test is fine. I caught mine on 20 pound test.

I'm hoping to try my luck with the river stripers this year!
I still haven't decided if i should launch my boat with only trolling motors on the
hudson yet but it may be ok if I stay closer to shore! Falls and Gman maybe we can all get together and do some shore casting I'm in northern dutchess county, Staatsburg!
Not trying to crash your action but I've never fished the
Hudson for stripers and it sounds like a blast!
I have landed a few decent catfish from shore fishing around norrie point!
Bill

COMMUTER I can't speak for GMAN but, I for one would be happy to have you join the party. Looks like we are starting our own Dutchess County Fishing club LOL.Seriously though, GMAN has a Small 14 footer and I have a New 12 Foot Sea Eagle. Between us I don't see why we couldn't do some serious fishing up in this neck of the woods this year. There are some others close to us also like JohnKud who is up in Newburgh. Maybe we can all get together sometime in the not too distant future. As far as the Striper fishing is concerned if we don't want to risk going out on the Hudson I do know a really good shore fishing spot where I caught my Striper last year.

Sounds like a plan to me. I have a 14' jon I trailer that I bought from woody late last year! I plan on getting a lot of boat time in this year!
I'll start looking at the calander to see when we can get together .
Maybe we can fish Whaley I've never been there.
This Sat I'm hoping to get out on a Private lake I fish in millbrook for some Panfish. The Bass there are great also

Stripers actually feed during the day Cool.

JC

Posted by Scott E. on 2002 AM:

Jameson,

Actually if I had a choice I would be down by the river fishing for them at about midnight but most of the areas where you can get near the river are town parks that are closed at dusk and open at dawn, so rather than risk getting ticketed by the local P.D. for being there after dark we are forced to fish for them during the day.

When I lived in Yorktown Heights ( late 60's) we fished for them off the rock jetty behind the Croton on Hudson Railroad station at night. We also went out to the rock piles across from the entrance to camp Smith ( old road behind the fuel tanks) at the foot of Bear Mountain.

One of the best locations was by boat from the river that comes from Croton Reservoir and goes under the RR tracks and route 9 just south of
Croton Point Park. There is a big sand/mud flat out there and bait fish congregate in that area == BIG fish are chasing them. We fished with live bait and used balloons to suspend them.

In both cases we caught some decent fish on cut or live bait.

Of course that's over 30 years ago and things have likely changed.

Anybody fishing the Croton Pt area keep your eyes open for a fleet (5 or 6) of 28' center consoles at least 6 fisherman per boat. The operate out of the Half Moon Bay marina near the condos. At first there will be just one and as the fishing picks up the balance of the fleeet arrives. The fisherman typically wear identical rain gear(if necessary), fish w identical tackle, and arrive in 1 or 2 vans or a bus. This operation bounces around depending on the fish and have been chased from LIS to Sandy Hook and to the Hudson. To put it politely they are not conservationists.

I saw at least 4 boats out near the Tappan Zee this morning. 2 to the south and 2 to the North.

If they're poachers (and I assume they are) how come nobody reports them?...........I would!

JP,

A few years ago I took quite a interest in this group and there were citations issued. My situation has changed a little and I now forgo the striper fishing. The DEC while always wanting the info took many, many phone calls before they finally acted. The result was about the same as a UPS driver getting a tickect for double parking in
Manhattan....just part of the cost of doing business. Looks like this group is still in business and you can take that literally.

Huge,

I wasn't sure what you meant that's why I began my statement with the if.
There MO is not about wasting a bunch of time soaking bait when it's not productive.

At these water temps they may send one boat every few days to try and make contact with the fish. The fish are usually thick at Croton Pt. before the whole fleet comes to the river.

That's sad. People poaching for profit should be jailed, not just fined. As well as the people buying the fish.cussin
