Thumbs upCroton Reservoir Get-Together

Another successful NYBass Get-Together, although the fishing was tough!

We got off to an inauspicious start, at the diner that never closes was closed when I pulled up at
4:00am! We had to meet up in the pre-dawn chilly air but everyone managed to find the place. After a brief meet and greet, by 5:00am we were all off to our respective boat's mooring areas. Basshunter(Pete) and Flatcoat (Craig) were up on the North end with Gregg and I. Telcoguru (John) and Papa John (John) were in the middle by the Rt. 129 Bridge. Res Dog (Steve) and Maximus10K (Max) were East of them and the rest of the crew including Pete L, Basserachi (Mark), John G, Jeff BVS and Vic were down South by Snake Island.

The low 60º's air temps and the high 70º's surface temps created a low wispy fog that screamed topwater. Gregg and I anticipated a hot topwater bite that never materialized. We threw jitterbugs and Spittin Image, but got no strikes. Fish were blowing up all around us, but not on our baits.

We switched up to soft plastics and the bite remained slow. I got a 2 lb keeper while reeling in a chartruese and white laminate 5" kinami, and another small largemouth off a deep weed edge, but that was it for the first 5 hours! It wasn't until we got all the way down to the Rt 129 bridge pilings that we got any more fish. Gregg pulled two largemouth off the pilings, one decent keeper...

Gregg's best fish of the day
...and one short.

And that was it!

We threw soft plastics, cranks, spinnerbaits, jigs, tailspinners, tubes and everything else we could think of. We threw on inner weed edges, outer weed edges, riprap, pilings, flats, drop offs...everywhere, but the fishing was too tough! Oh well, the company was great and any time on the water with Gregg is a treat. I suspected a slow bite with the high bluebird skies and the slow fishing recently. I was hoping the Croton would make a better accounting of itself, but not today.

After the fishing we met up with everyone at the Pizza Shop and had a blast! I have yet to meet an NYBasser I ddin't like, and meeting the new guys like Steve (Res Dog), Telcoguru (John), Papa John, Flatcoat (Craig), and Maximus10k was great. All were great fun to b.s and eat pizza with. I hope I get to fish with each and every one of you personally. It was also great to see the usuall gang like Basshunter (Pete), John G, Gregg, Jeff BVS, Vic, Pete L, and Basserachi. It was also great to meet a couple of Basserachi's friends who showed up on their boat and also shared the yuks with us at the pizza place.
There were some serious laughs on the water including Vic yelling, "Hey Mark, nice reservoir you got here!" after some tough fishing of his own. Sorry Vic, we'll do this on Kensico next time

Special thanks to Basshunter for coming from so far away to get here, and to Flatcoat (Craig) for meeting him in a faimilar place and leading him to the closed diner.

Also special thanks to Max for picking up Res Dog (Steve) on his way up. I really wanted to meet both of you, and was glad I got a chance to do so. Hopefully we can fish together soon. Max, let's pull a toothy or two off the railroad tressle bridge. Steve, hopefully I'll see you out in the suds this summer and on the reservoir system again soon.

Super special thanks to Basserachi (Mark) for all the work getting extra boats in place so people could fish together. This whole thing was his idea, and without his hauling boats to and fro as I called him to tell him this and that guy was or wasn't coming, this would not have come off so smoothly.

And always, thanks to John G, Gregg, Frank J, Mike D and everyone else who keeps this tremendous fishing resource up and running as well as moderaiting it to make it the wonderful community it is!

To summarize, it was a wonderful day with some wonderful people, and as you'll soon see, some people caught some nice fish. I'll leave it to them to post their experiences, but let me whet your appetite with some juicy teasers...

Some big fish, with the lunker being accompanied by a funny photo mishap and two NYBassers with some skin removed by fiesty fish!

Tight Lines,

Mark

Great report...sorry to hear there weren't more keepers, but I know sometimes it can be tough. Sorry I couldn't make the get-together, but it's great to see that everyone had a good time.

P.S. - ALL diners SHOULD be open at
4 A.M., never know when you'll get an omelette attack!

Congratulations Mark

You pulled off a good one. Thank you, really I know how much effort you had to put in to get it done. Great sharing a boat with you again.

The morning mist sure looked nice but the topwater non-bite was more comical then Mark described because every time we moved on they keep hitting the surface right where we had been. As mark said tried alot of stuff and worked together good, if I went in Mark went out, I went high Mark worked low, we worked it hard all day to come away with 4 fish.

Of cause the best part is seeing all your old friends and making some new ones, and it was good pizza (who wanted eggs anyway, LOL)

Mark's better fish...

Sounds like another great NYBass get together. Also sounds like my morning at Bantam. You would bet topwater was the ticket, but no go. Nice fish Gregg & Mark.
But I'm wondering if the "Evil Tyrant" has upset the gods. Ramp closed at Maho, diner closed for this one. Sounds like a pattern.

well I'm sorry you guys didn't have more bites but I was out early today a few miles over on the Croton -- near the railroad trestle -- and I saw the same things: low fog, many fish jumping and no biting.

well, misery loves company any way. at least some people had luck.

As usual , another EXCELLANT NYBASS get-together!!!!!!!!!
Mark G - Great job putting it all together. In-spite of the Diner thats never closed, we managed to at least get our coffee!!!!
Too bad we couldn`t get the fish to come out and play a little more. Was very surprised there was NO topwater bite , but we still managed to get some nice bass into the boat.
Thanks to Basseracci , for rowing me around all day. We will get out again soon!!!!!!! Not a whole lot of fish , but some great laughs and an enjoyable day on the water, including a very gluttonus bass and the bird of prey from hell!!!! Piece of advise-- - DO NOT FISH IN AREAS WITH LARGE BIRDS SITTING IN OVERHEAD BRANCHES!!!!
Always good to get out with the usual suspects , and to meet some of the newer guys as well. Hopefully , we will be able to put a couple more of these together.

Glad it worked out...sounds like you guys had a good time...

Change the Diner Name !!!

Change the Diner Name to....

"McDONALD"S DINER"

I had a great time and although the fishing was slow, the event went much better than I expected...Aside from the diner fiasco, it went off without a hitch and we made up for that lost breakfast with some great conversation and some extra pizzas at lunchtime...

It was great to see everyone today...As always it was great to see the regular dogs like John G, Mark G, Vic, Pete/Basshunter, Jeff BVS, Gregg and most of all my partner Pete L...And it was great to finally meet the others like Res Dog/Steve, telcoguru/John, PapaJohn, Maximus, and Flatcoat/John...

I had a blast with pete...After the diner denied me a square breakfast, I had my doubts about my stamina for the upcoming heated day...But as soon as i saw that fog on the lake, I thought, I'm gonna slam some topwater, and all will be well...The topwater never went off...Not even a strike...When we started marking schools of bait fish suspended at various depths and what seemed to be arcs in the area, we both went to rattle traps...I had a tick on my first cast on the way down...Pete then picked up his first fish on what seemed to be his next cast, also on the way down...His fish was about a 2 lb lmb...A few more casts, and i connected with one of these corralling fish...Another 2 lb LMB...Both fish seemed to be lurking over 14 - 18 ft of water...We thought we were on to something...

At this point things weren't looking great, but they weren't looking too bad either...Next, Pete connected with a nice LMB on a T-rigged worm...The fish gave a nice fight but pete, the seasoned fisherman he is, made it look easy...We netted the fish that easily reached 4 lbs...Nice job Pete...That reaction bite cooled, and that was that...Topwater and rat-l-traps were done...

After that the soft plastic bites were occasional and mostly from pannies it seemed...We threw some senkos and assorted T-rigs... I managed a wacky senko fish that was near or at 2 lbs...It was hard to detect the hit with all the machine gunner pannies taking shots at my bait, but I managed to hook and boat him...

After that, it seemed like days before we boated another fish...We fished this really beautiful rock cliff that had about a 5-7 ft initial ledge, then drops right off into 50 or more feet...I picked up my nicest fish here on a t-rigged 7" powerworm with a rattling worm weight...This fish was hungry, and i'll let Pete tell you why...It went about 3.5 lbs...I got him tight to the rock cliff off the 5 - 7 ft ledge...It was the second in a row for me from that rocky shoreline, and we thought we were on another pattern...By this time we could here John G and Jeff whispering to each other in their boat and so we rowed over to share our tallies for the day thus far...They were not Croton-esque numbers...

With the heat stroke and malnutrition setting in, we pressed on to the south shore at about
11am... We toyed with some slop fishing thinking we could wake up a shading bass, but to no avail...We went in to investigate what appeared to be a tributary as it might have some running, cooler, oxygenated water, but it was about 2 ft deep all around, and stagnant...Finally, on the way back, I switched up to a chartreuse tail T-rigged worm as I noticed the water turbidity looked worse...I picked up another LMB close to a point that was near a submerged island and a weedbed...The fish was about 1.75 lbs...That was it...Six keeper fish between us...I had four, and Pete had two, including the boat lunker of 4+ lbs...

We rowed back, packed up our massive amounts of gear, and ate up at the pizza place with the rest of the guys...

I just wanted to say that although the fishing was slow, the time did kind of fly by...That's because I had great company all around me, and especially in my boat...Thanks for fishing with me Pete...We'll do better next time...

By the way, my cousin Anthony and my good friend Rich, also fished with us today in another boat...They had a 4+ LMB a 2 lb LMB, a nice pick and some yellows....And perhaps the only, if not the most interesting topwater catch of the day, A SNAKE !!! My cousin caught a snake on his LC popper and they were screaming and hollering like a bunch of sissies...Needless to say, a life had to be taken to retrieve that LC...They were an Abbot and Costello routine all day long !!!

Good Times

Mark

Pete, tell them the worm story and about our encounter with the Teradactyl...

.......do you mean to imply that this was above and beyond the call of DOODY?

Posted by Pete L on 07-20-2003 08:44 PM:

Jared - Yes!!! Fortunately , we were about 20' from the shore.
Man , that was a BIG bird!!!!!!!! My wife hates it when her car gets hit by the mess from a sparrow. This was scary!!!!

having fished the day before with Jeff, I knew fishing would be tough, however, I had a few patterns and you had to just hang in there.....

well, Jeff and I ended up with a blast as we finally hit paydirt at a special offshore hump, off the deep weed edges of it, and after basically an entire morning of slow fishing, we had an incredible flurry of 6 bass in only 20 minutes!! This being on a slowwwwwwwwww drop senko at about 14 or 15 feet depth ( the edge of the visible weeds........

and this pattern culminated in , I'm surprised no one mentioned it, a huge 6.1 pound LM!!!! Now the funniest part, is that Jeff snapped the picture, and I said to him, are you okay with that picture, do you want another one, and he insisted, nahhh, picture is fine.....so he goes home before the pizza lunch to print it out and .....HOLEY MOLEY, he came up with a crotch shot of me with barely a wisp of our giant fish!!!

tomorrow I will try to post it up here after I re-size it for the board......

Jeff and I had 8 fish total, but amongst that total was the 6, another 4 pounder and a 3.5.....so we really had some quality fish despite the fact that in between fish number 2 and number 8 we put in a good 4 or 5 grueling hours of not one single fish!

all fish were either on senko or again, the blade bait...and all fish were in 15 to 25 feet of water average depth, same as we found the day before.

Croton is an excellent fishery which like many places is kind of tough now, however, the potential for size is always there.

as for the get together itself: it was just fantastic! Great to meet a whole bunch of new guys, the Reseroir Dogs as I will now call them! another great group of NyBassers.....

this was a really fun thing to do, and definitely worth a repeat.....

Muchos Kudos to Mark G, the current reigning number one Social Butterfly on this board! LOL....

and also, I would like to give special thanks to Mark D (Basserachi), who kindly let several people use his many boats....Mark had to move the boats himself to one spot, so he really went all out to provide boating for the many guys that participated in this thing today.......

also, thanks to Jeff for basically rowing me around the entire weekend, and helping me catch some giant fish, thanks buddy......

Wow, a closed diner? No wonder you guys didn't slay them! LOL! Sounds like you guys made the best of a beautiful day. Now, I don't feel as bad about my one fish at Rockland yesterday. Although fishing seemed to pick back up Wed-Fri, it slowed down for some of us on the weekend.

Great Time!

As you all know, I am a new member to the NYBASS family.
After meeting everyone this morning and then for lunch in the afternoon, I felt like I'd known all the guys for years! Thanks to all for a warm welcome and a really great day all around.

Mark G. - You were right about BassHunter, even a slow day on the water is fun with him in the boat!

Looking forward to the next outing....

You can tell from 1/2 a mile away when John gets excited.
Jeff is now barred from being the official event photographer!!!!LOL.

real nice get together

Now that was the 1st time in 25 years that I have ever seen that diner closed, and was saying to Maximus, { its a good thing we bought some peanuts!lol} I want to thank Mark G and bassaracci for putting this thing together, it was a lot of work coordinating and all in all everyone had a great time. Thanks Max for going the extra mile and picking me up also, we had a great time out there even though it was tough.
When we started out I thought we would work the shade zone and stay out of the sun and by keeping southeast along the shores we could do that till about
10:30 am. Max was using a senko and targeting shallow zones with a skipping technique, and I was fishing in the 16 - 20 ft depths with 10" power worms. My first hit was after 1 hour and I missed him, shortly after nailed a 2.5 lber. Then I switched to a 7" power worm with the hope of getting a hit an hour and basically that is what happened. Ended up with 6 fish, with the biggest being 4.5
It was a lot of fun fishing with maximus, it was tough out there, and the croton was a bit stingy.
It was great finally meeting all of the guys also,
had a great get together Mark G!

Steve you forgot to mention the huge pickerel that tried to eat your hand and almost succeded. It was a pleasure to fish Steve who is a great guy and a fisherman that someone can learn alot from. During one of the tuffest patterns on Croton he still put togther a bag of 5 fish just under 17lbs! I can't say I did that well with only 3 shorts brought into the boat. I have a few pictures I'm going to post later, a nice 4.5 LM Steve caught along weedbeds by a couple submerged islands. And a pickerel with a head the size of an alligator! It was great to meet the guys, and special thanks to Steve for having me on his boat and Mark G for putting everthing together.

Flatcoat we fished our a$$ off, hope the next time we have better fishing...the company was as always tops, the Fanseca Cigar was awsome thanx again.

I didn't make it back out the wind started to pick up, I was thinking about fighting that wind with out a motor NOT! went home hung out with the family in the pool (cool)

I't was great to seen you guy's againg, and meet new members, I hope we can do this soon I had a blast.

John G next time you should fish with top coat he takes a very nice photos, I'll send all the pics to Mike D so he can post them I can't work this thing.

Mark you did a great job....thank you.

SmileEven with no fish, it was fun

The only fish I managed was a bluegill not much bigger than the Rapala it took.

Just had to thank everyone involved.
Mark G., new social coordinator, thanks for organizing this. Really the only bad thing all day was the diner being closed.
Telcoguru, thanks for the hospitality on your boat. You rowed my butt all over that northern arm, and we tried everything. The bass just wouldn't cooperate. Also thanks for being so concerned, acting fast, and not laughing too much when I fell backwards into the drink. At least I was a lot cooler while my backside dried off. I'm glad you managed a bass on a very tough day.
Thanks to everyone else for making it such a good event, whatever you did, move boats, pick up people, etc.

I kept saying, somebody's going to figure it out today. It will probably be deep, and/or in the weeds. The only fish off our boat was Telco's off a bridge piling in deep water. I also figured John G and Jeff stood a good chance at the best fish of the day. Turned out that way, even if they caught all their fish late in the game.

Regardless, this was my first big NYBass get-together, and it was a lot of fun. Let's try this one again for the Fall bite.
