ExclamationControversy at Central Park! Theole34 and MikeD Kicked Off for No Good Reason

quite a day for me and robbie at CP... the day started with 2 quick bass in spot A and ended with us surrounded by various forms of law enforcement...oh brother!

first the fishing report....

we decided to take a rowboat out so we could cover the entire lake... robbie had his portable depthfinder and we noted that most of the lake is 4-6 ft as suspected, with no noticable signs of structure that we could see... no big suprise...we anchored up and almost immediately plucked 2 bass from of a fallen tree...1.5 and 3 lbers... the skies were clear blue and it started to get hot quickly... we were fishing tubes, senkos and a couple other baits... we had a nice conversation with a couple of NYPD's finest who were on the bridge(great to see them patrolling the park) and i had a nice fish in front of them that broke off...we lost several fish today on line breaks or missed hooksets...i hate that!...we managed 5 fish on the edges of shade lines before our wonderful day was interrupted by a ridiculous accusation.... a guy who worked at the boat rentals rowed up to us and said we had to get off the lake... he said someone called the parks dept. and complained about us being abusive to someone on the lake and we'd have to get off... he also said that fishing is not allowed on rowboats...

well, i immediately called the NYBTV crew and asked them to meet us on shore cause i had a feeling we could get some good footage of the situation... after rowing in, i asked to speak to the manager and started rolling the tape... i told him this was a prank and in fact we were being total gentleman out there, always yielding to other boaters...there was hardly anyone out there, so it wasn't hard... i also asked him about this "no fishing" rule and he said it was the parks dept that called him and told them about it... i asked to see where this rule is written and informed him that on 2 occasions i had been told by his staff that i could fish from the boat... their employee confirmed this, telling me people always fish from them....hmmmmm...what is going on here?

well, i guess the manager didn't appreciate the video camera cause he called for reinforcement... within minutes, 4 park rangers and a half dozen park police appear with lights flashing...now this is getting interesting...

i'm gonna let robbie come on and give details on the rest of what happened as i head to geraldo rivera's editing studio to sift through the video footage... i will say one thing: this appears to be a lame prank by a frustrated interloper...either some silly person who is threatened by bass fishermen or possibly someone more sinister...

A MESSAGE TO YOU, FRUSTRATED ONE: I win!...today i fished for bass, spent time with a friend and got some excellent footage for NYBTV to share with my NYBASS buddies!...you are an evil doer!

Great Day, spent with a great friend.

Mike D NYC treated me to a day on his home turf at central park lake. we arrived at about 10:30ish and rented a 3 seat rowboat to fish from. the rowboat was fairly new, unlike the kilroy adorned ones of my past visits in the 80's.

Mike rowed to a spot he calls A. we threw one cast each and he reached for the video camera. as he came around with the camera.. i struck the first bass.. about a 1.5 chunker. he struck immed after with about a 3lbr. both on senko style baits, kinami, and another type.

fishing died for about 30 mins. i detected real short bites on the senko. not enough for a hookset even. i was launching senkos everytime.

we moved around to the main pond, and i switched to a large Black red flake Snoozers tube. the tube was rigged with a worm weight, glass bead and g-lock hook. this was the ticket. i got into a little groove on some little chunks.. like 1.4 - 1.8ish, and just as we were going to hit a 90 yard stretch of shaded wood, BAM!!

big Mo said..
No Mo!

we had to bail, because someone called us in to Parks Police. they said we we disorderly, and argued with people.

we went in and chatted with the mgr. he was a little snooty, and said he would get the parks police name and number for me. nope.. he called park police and said we were disorderly again.

parks came, and they were the nicest people we met all day. they could not tell us any statute that prohibits fishing from boats, but asked us to stop, because the rowboat snoot wanted us to. i told the parks supervisor that the rowboat snoot blamed him, and just then the rowboat snoot ran away.

needless to say the parks guys and gals were great. a little on the less informed side, but nice!

we jetted, and got some sandwiches in little
italy. joked around at mikes studio, and that's it.

I WIN!! i got to catch BASS from
Central Park Lake!! great day. no person can take that away from me. had a great time with a friend.. fishing, hanging out and having a beer!!

it was an excellent day and it was real nice hanging with my good friend rob and throwing back a couple beers later...

but this is not the end of this story!...NYBTV highlights will be airing as soon as the footage is approved by local authorities and the state department(yeah, they want to get involved again...patx must be in town)...i'm gonna get to the bottom of this cause fishing from a boat is much better than shore and i want to do it...if this is indeed a parks dept. rule, then fine...but i have a feeling it's not...think of all those little kids who won't be able to fish on the boats anymore with their fathers...i don't think so.

the boat rentals are run by a private company and it is their right to not let people fish from the boats... the thing is that they said it is a parks dept rule...i don't believe them...the park police didn't know of any rule...i've see people fishing from the boats before... there are no signs that say no fishing...to the contrary...there are signs all over encouraging fishing on the lake...also, the employees say you are allowed to fish.... i think it was just a misunderstanding cause one jerk called up and said we were disorderly and they wanted to get us off..

now robbie is NYPD and we let them know that, but no one knew the rules and the manager disappeared so we decided to just call it a day instead of pushing the issue.

i did some checking, and find only two rules that you must follow on CP Lake.

1 c&r only - ok, i agree
2 barbs on hooks must be removed. - accepted.

no rules on rowboats.

if it was a rule of the rowboat facility, i would agree. it is not a standing rule. they did it to appease a fool.

the "bunny cops" were not rude, mean, or foul. they were just misinformed. i actually liked the parks cops. good solid people doing their jobs.

cops don't eat donuts. it has been bagel for about 10 years now. we do frequent coffee house though for java! 12 hours can get rough when you deal with the ups and downs we do. bagels and coffee.

robbie

ps - mike when are they airing the cp video?

From an article I read online:

The Central Park Conservancy (212-310-6600) publishes a booklet "A Guide to Fishing in
Central Park," which include the rules for fishing in Central Park, a map of the park, and fishing tips.

Also, here is the website for the Central Park Conservancy, which seems to be the governing body. No mention of a rule prohibiting fishing from boats. The other rules (catch and release, no hook barbs and a new one to me, no lead anchors (do they mean sinkers?) are listed.

I think a call to the Conservancy would clear up the rules questions.

i am currently working with 3 people in the state / city to come to an agreement. if nys/nyc allow the fishing from boats supplied by cp restaurant, then the restaurant owner should, and can be persuaded to allow a full set of rules to be hung and followed by anglers. i am willing to help construct the rule board, and assist in placing signs. i am also willing to help educate some young anglers through the conservancy. i know it is a longshot, but a stab at an agreement!

these are reasonable people. the interloper/ instigator was way off base, and a lost soul. most people that take this stance and do the anonymous report are anal minus 1 personality people. lack of an education in this sport is usualy involved also.

i hope this comes to a good end, because it was a really good fishing day. we still didn't get to the best piece of water, and i had 5 fish already. could have been a 10+ day in a city lake, with nothing under 1.5. some bruisers are in there.

Wow !!!! I thought I had bad luck, O man that is so lame. The guy in video looks like he never held a fishing pole in his life.
It probably was some a-hole yuppie that called in, and dosen't like the idea of the working class type of person out having a nice day invading there upscale sanctuary. The park police had to laugh about this cause I spoke to alot of them around here and they really care about the enviorment, They patrol the shore line of gravesend bay and give tickets whenever possible. Be it littering, open containers of alcohol (beer) also the dep patrols here to and slap tickets on anyone with undersized striped bass or fluke.

This sounds like a job for the FOX 5 PROBLEMSOLVERS

Great video and what you gonna do when they come for you

Bass in the City...

Great video guys! I do not see why Fox would not want it. It is reality TV at its best. That video is a lot better then some of their contrived reality shows. Keep filming and maybe HBO will pick it up. Sex and the City will be the lead in for Bass and the City. That is cutting edge stuff. How could fishing not be allowed? If that is the case some inner city kids will never know what it is like to wet a line.

notice the man, Loebs Boathouse mgr, states that it is not his rule. he says it is the parks rule. parks responded by saying that it is not their rule that it is the mgrs rule. neither party has a rule.

the parks supervisor stated to me that there is no rule that is listed anywhere. THERE IS NO RULE about boat fishing from the loeb boats.

i will have complete clarification on this within a week. i will get it in writing from a parks supervisor.. higher than you will ever meet on the street.

i WILL FISH central park from a boat by the end of august.. WITH Mike d nyc.

Cool

This just in from the New York Times!

Central Park New York City RT.

Local authorities confirmed today that two suspected terrorists disguised as "bass fishermen" were questioned and later released by Park Authority Police and the NYPD.

A NYPD spokesman told the NYT that they could not have been bass fishermen because they had no chewing tobacco and no Budweiser, which led to the investigation in the first place. When the officers saw the GYCB Senko's they knew they were both mentally challenged as they had no other tackle and they were released to their respective guardians.

A Parks Police spokesperson told the NYT quote " they seemed like nice boys" "The one with the blue eyes was a little stud muffin"!

Tight Lines!

Pat, Atkins is NOT a lifestyle type of diet, something you can basically follow forever, and yes, the Guy did stroke out, doesn't surprise me.....dieting is the simplest thing in the world...IN THEORY, in practice, it sucks!

3 meals a day, MODERATE portions....( you know what that means)

ZERO Junk inbetween, not just a little, zero

Step up the exercising, for some that means doing anything at all, for those of us who do regularly, it means just doing a little more

if you are eating less than your body needs, regardless of what it is, and you are burning calories with extra exercise you will lose weight, period, laws of biology!

if you are impossibly hungry between a meal, fruit will suffice, ONE piece...LOL.......

I am talking strictly a lose weight diet, period... I know you dont lift, which makes it more complicated

How in the world are you to exercise when you are on the road all the time? wow, has to be difficult, plus eating out constantly as you will be on the road is also a challenge, eating out anywhere, regardless of your choices means more fat and more salt, just goes with the territory....

good luck!! JOHN G
