Jeff's Wampus barbecue a great thing!!

Just got back, have to catch a little nap this afternoon as I have only had 2 hours of sleep in the last 36 hours......

Jeff had a real feast after a good morning of fishing, tons of burgers, dogs and sausages, chips, beer and soda galore and lots of the usual laughs and comraderie......

AS to Wampus, I thought it was kind of slow by it's usual standards.....Gregg and I along with MikeD and the Senko Baron were able to get out at
5 am because we launched our own boats...... Dodge and Falls fisherman, and Mark G and Vic and his Brother had to wait until almost 7:30 for the rental guy to get everything ready.....they missed a furious first light of dawn bite....topwater was an energetic half hour or so, followed by some more agressive chasing of lures.....however, most of the morning that followed required very slow senko and texas worm tactics and a lot of patience.......

Gregg and I put 18 into the boat, however the Senko Baron and Mike topped that with about 24, the other guys will have to come on and say how they did, I know they struggled a bit, most of them, however, Gregg and I were the only ones to leave after lunch, and the rest are still out there fishing...

Paul Mattie and PeteL joined us for the lunch and I believe Pete was going to rent a boat and continue on also....so perhaps they can all come on later and explain more details of what they did...

Our tactics were varied: topwater was sugoi splash/pop r.....followed by a few senko, a few Yammie Lizard , some quality t-rig worming and the usual dependable brewer's grub...

fish were primarily off deep weed edges and beyond......

just a great little gathering, something we will have to do more often on there as it lends itself so nicely to that kind of thing...

Gregg will post some pictures......mucho thanks to the Baron for bringing so many vittles, as well as the other guys who brought along additional suds and beverages and whatever.....

JOHN G

It turned out to be fun day even though I would have liked to have done better than I did. Dodgeguy and I got to Wampus at 6:00 am. Mark was there waiting for the launch to open as we were so, we all went down to the dock see what we could catch while we waited for the boat guy to get there. Dodgeguy was the first to to get the bite. A nice Largemouth. I was lucky enough to hook up with a Largemouth about 10 minutes later. Although it was no monster it would assure that I wouldn't be skunked this day. After about a an hour the boat rental opened and we got out on the water. We fished about every part of wampus and our final total including the ones caught on the dock was, Dodgeguy caught 8 Largemouths and I caught 2 Largemouth and on nice yellow perch. I got the two LM on a pearl white and neon green Brewers Grub. I got the Perch on a deep running crankbait.

Dodgeguy actually caught 9. 8 Largemouths and one Falls Fisherman. I was wearing my life vest when Dodgeguy Put a Crankbait dead into the right sde of my chest. If not for the vest Dodgeguy would have needed a larger scale. Dodgeguy did really well and I always enjoy fishing with him. We both enjoyed the day and the lunch was great as was getting together with the other guys and shooting the breeze.

I won't elaborate about Dodgeguys fish because I am sure he will want to tell you about it himself. I will only say that he caught some very respectable bass. We called it a day at 3:00 pm.

Good company, Good weather, A Good lunch and, fish caught. I couldn't have asked for a better day ( except maybe to have caught more fish. OK so I'm greedy )

I think that everyone posted pretty good numbers considering that boat control must be a little tough when you have to row. The quality of the fish in that place seems good as well. Sounds like all had a blast! Nice.

Thumbs up

ok...regarding the senko thing... i have decided to start an organization made up of believers...some will call it a religion...it will be modeled after "Scientology" and I think i'm gonna call it "Senkoism"...Jeff Lang BVS will be the L.Ron Hubbard figure....i've already filed for not-for-profit status with the federal government and jeff is working on the manuscript now...i'll be in touch with details later...

anyhow....

GREAT DAY!...i was torn about missing the EEBA BBQ, but i really wanted to attend this one to meet some more members and fish with my pal L.Ron Snoozer tube... we were not diappointed!...we had a steady bite from 5:30 till we stopped at 11:30... 24 bass and 1 pick... i had some early topwater action on a sugoi splash, then got a fish on the salty sinker before i switched to the BVS special(5in watermellon w/black flake senko)...john gave us a good ribbing for staying with our beloved salty snack, but hey.... it produces!... we caught most of the fish off the deeper weedlines with a few shallow fish thrown in...like jeff said, most were quality with a couple of nice 3-4 lbers thrown in...

the BBQ was just in time as we wolfed down the greasy meats and chatted... it was great to meet dodge finally and i am intent on fishing with this guy!..i can tell we share the same brand of humor and look forward to a one-on-one so he can show me some of his tactics... also nice to meet falls fishermen: a good natured guy with a genuine enthusiasm for NYBASS and the sport... and Mark G: a really, really nice guy!... good to see my man vicyankeesrule and his bro out there with vic nursing a 24 hour flu(or something he caught from a keg of beer)...john and gregg with the usual teasing and john giving us a live broadcast of his fishing throughout the day(you can hear this guy talk from the other side of the lake!) ...

also great to see peteL and paul mattie(or paul at home...i'm still not sure what to call this guy)...paul showed me where he caught his biggest bass ever...and it was on Wampus!...go figure!

what a great group of guys...just an awesome time and great weather to boot...oh yes, we'll be doing this again...

i have video also!... it may take a couple days cause i am super busy at work this week...stay tuned to NYBTV for drama, laughs and big senko fish!

I too had a great time. This was my first get together and it was a blast! Jeff had all the food going, and there was plenty of sausages, burgers, dogs, chips, drinks, etc. I got there at 6am after getting 3 hours of sleep started throwing a buzzbait off the dock while I waited for the rowboat rental to open. The first people I met were Dodge and Falls (Noel) as they pulled up and joined me on the dock. Dodge is hysterical ! What a fun guy to be around. Noel is also a great guy who shares a penchant for the Brewer's grub with me. I saw Jeff and Mike as well as John G and Gregg out on the water and John G was nice enough to take the time to row over to the dock and shake my hand. Good to finally meet you, John! Gregg I had already met, but it was good to see him as well.

The boat rental guy finally showed up and we finally got out on the water. I managed two fish in the morning session. First was on a laydown on my second cast. I had to pull up anchor and row over to get him after he wrapped up in a branch. It was a lot of work for a 14" bass, but at least I wouldn't get skunked. I struggled to find a pattern until I got to a spot near the outer edge of a weedline and got a nice 2.5 largemouth, and lost what I bet was a pickerel since my line snapped right after the hookset. Both fish were taken on a 5" watermelon senko. I was having a tough time with the
Texas rig due to all the weeds.

Before I knew it, I saw all the NYBass guys on shore at the BBQ pit and I headed in to get some grub. It was there that I met Vic (Yankeesrule) and his brother. Vic was nice, despite wearing a Yankees hat while I had all Mets gear on . It was also great to meet MikeD, who was as genuine as his posts. I briefly got to shake Paul's hand and say hello to him as well.

Finally, I invited Pete out on my boat, since I was rowing solo, and we hit the water for about an hour. He was great to fish with! I don't get much chance to fish from a boat much, and he ended up doing much of the rowing, despite my earlier insisting that I would do it. We spent much of the time in the gak, pulling weedless topwater baits over the muck. Pete mananged a small bass and I missed a shot after a nice blowup on my Snagproof Weed demon. Pete told me some history about NYBass and unfortunately the fish didn't interrupt us much.

All in all it was a great day. I only managed 2 fish, but I didn't get skunked and met lots of great people. Thanks again to Jeff for putting this thing together!

Mark

Lake Ronko was almost the Dead Sea yesterday but a few guys managed some nice smallies and a nice LM. Greasy meat and good company was better than the fishing though !!!

I would love to meet some of you guys.......even the one's with MikeD's humor !!!

we had good representation yesterday from our NYBASS staff.....you guys had JohnG and MikeD and we had FrankJ !!!

Very cool !!!!!

this
lake ronko sounds like a tough place to fish!...the dead sea is not good!

its event tougher than ever with the water levels as low as they are. absolutely NO shoreline cover. Structure is hard to come by and there are just too many damn white perch feeding everybody. This fall they are dumping in a hefty amount of stumps they dug up from a highway project out east. I think this will really help the fishing as they will have distinct places to congregate.

We'll see
