Scott E's Bashakill BASH Report....

A real nice day, that is for sure, even though the fishing was kind of spotty....

first of all, the breakfast at the diner was so much fun, everyone in a jolly mood....Quickway Diner is sure the quickway to a cardiac arrest: eggs, sausage, homefries, pancakes...whew! havent had a breakfast like that in a long time!

but after a great conversation there, we headed to the 'Kill and we were down to only 4 boats......Gregg and I on one, Scott E with Scott Srdfish, Commuter Bill with BassHawg and our own McGuyver himself, FranK M all alone on his tricked out canoe!

Anyone familiar with the Bash knows about following the channel, and today was no exception, with absolutely no action whatsoever, anywhere BUT the edges of the channel and into the heavy stuff...and the bite was virtually 100 percent Pickeral....couldnt have been to many bass, in spite of the open season situation there.....

the ticket was to throw a plastic to the edges, preferably slow....I was using thrashers and senkos, Gregg similar......

unfortunately they were not all that voracious at times, and we only had 7 for the boat.......

I believe Bill and Hawg totaled another seven and the two Scotts only mustered up a couple, so it wasn't blazing, however, Frank was the star of the day with about 16 of them Critters~

the other guys can come on and give more details of their catches......

traffic on the way back was Horrendous!! Backed up on the Thruway from 14B....what a mess....

but a beautiful day to be out in nature and fish a very different type of place indeed.......

special thanks to superstar Scott E for organizing this meet!!

Bashikill is a different type of place. It was great to see everyone and had a good time despite some bad fishing on my part missed out on to many opportunities.

TalkingJust a great day with the guys!!!

What else can be said but thanks guys for showing up, without you guys it wouldn't have happened, it just ended too soon!!!

1 pickerel each and Scott D had a few blow ups on a top water frog, I was cut off 3 times and had two blow ups on a 3 inch grub.

What's wrong Johnny can't handle a man sized breakfast!!!

On my way home from dropping Vic(Bass Hawg) off in Shahola, I did a little exploring and was rewarded with a site of momma bear and her two cubs playing, I quickly snapped a couple of pictures, they didn't come out real good as I was a little to far away but momma was a bit nervous watching my every move.

I fished the kill over 10 years ago and was not impressed by the 12" chain pics that I caught in large numbers. But today showed me that pics do eventually grow up! My average size was 14-15", with a nice one at 17".

A few things you can count on about pics at this time if year ANYWHERE:

1.They strike thick soft plastics in the 4-7" sizes. A 5/0, sharp, texposed hook will take even 12" youngsters.

2. They are drawn to flash, like a deer into headlights. I fashioned a weighted in line spin with a 6" Hoo Daddy worm and caugth 10 fish before 12pm. Ditto for the 2 largemouth.

3. Pic have no problem hanging near pad openings in 15" of water, 30 yds. in from the channel edge.

4. Pic in the channel (remember we're talking a winding channel only 40 yds across in spots), will hit crankbaits. The 17" pic was caught on a medium dive-Yozuri.

5. Pic are not deterred from biting at a lure 4 times. Most of my fish came on the 3rd or 4th cast to the same fish!

6. If your going to horse fish out of heavy cover on 30 yd. casts, braid is the only way to go. You have 2 seconds for a power hook-set, and mono don't cut it. I lost no lures and was able to rip out stuck lures 99% of the time. Off course a 7' medium action rod gave me the leverage needed for a high rod-tip during the fight.

A few things stick out that I'll remember forever, about this outing:

1. The 5 1/2" partly-digested carp that I pulled out of a 14" pick, with the help of Gregg's pliers. (JohnG wanted to use the thing as bait, but it was too gross to even look at!) The pick was caught on a 7" Hoo Daddy, even with the tail sticking out of its throat!

2. The same comraderie as experienced at the
Mt. Kisco seminar.
(Too bad my 300 member club lacks it.)

3. Hearing Gregg curse John as he moved the boat around too fast as G was trying to pee into a can, standing up in John's leaking, flat bottom. And, hearing John curse Gregg for his wimpy hook-sets from a quarter of a mile away! And Gregg saying, "what's you yell'n for, you forget your hearing aid or somethin!" Too funny!!

4. Hearing John say to the waitress, " but I didn't order pancakes", and with the waitress responding, "but sir, you said, "I'll have what he's (Gregg) having, and he ordered pancakes with his (cardiac-arrest) breakfast." "Oh".

5. I'll always remember John asking me if I had Bondo on board to fix the hole in his boat. Sure John, and I also carry an acetylene torch, just in case.

6. Seeing the armada of canoes filled with bird watchers, paddling around hoping to see an eagle crap.

7. A day that went from chilly wind to dead calm, to cloudy to sunny, to warm to cold to warm etc. (You know how hard it is to take off long johns in a canoe or put them back on?)

just a few images of our motely crew:

Thumbs upGreat TIME!!

What a great day it was indeed!! I really enjoyed myself. Commuter and I did ok. - I caught 5 pickerals but Bill caught two ok bass. I would trade 5 picks for two bass any day!! Had a really good time with everyone and hope to do this again soon- actually I can't wait for Mahopac! I took plenty of pictures and hope to be putting them online soon too. Tons of thanks to Scott E for organizing the event, picking me up AND bringing me home!!! I owe you one Scott! I look forward to fishing with you again soon at Promised Land Lake.

I'm very glad I chose this get together for my first outing of the season!
Breakfast was a blast and I hope to attend a few more this year guys!

John Vic and I heard you guys arguing from 200 yds away and loved every minute of it!

Fishing was slow!
I caught a little 1lber on a spinner bait in the channel.
I hooked a 2lber in 10" of water and weeds , he got my 4lb test tangled and we had to go in and get him!
Next time I'll bring the braid Frank.

Vic was a great guy and angler to fish with and a great sport!
I left the front seat pedastal at home! Oops and Vic had to stand (sorry bud)!

Thanks scott for ther great time!
I hope to fish with all you guys again soon!
Bill

Very cool report and pics, fellas! I've only driving through the Basherkill Marsh (with my buddy Butch), but we didnt' fish it. We were on our way to Swinging Bridge Reservoir that day.

But it sure looks like "MicroBass" boat type water there! Glad you guys had such an awesome time.

Tight Lines...

Nice recap and photos, glad you had fun.

Posted by JOHN G on 05-05-2003 10:09 PM:

I was razzing the Greggster to death at that point, he hadn't caught a fish yet, and we were approaching the end of the day, and his hookset on a couple of pick strikes was so bad that I let him have it with a salvo of choice words....it prompted him to hook the next fish! LOL........

Gregg has a GREAT hookset, however, he was trying to finesse those little picks out of the salad, but what was needed was to really slam them despite their size......

Frank, tears were streaming down my face as I read your last reply.....you are too much!

Sorry I missed out

I try to make these things and I was so sorry I missed this one I had a family function to go to. I wasn't feeling good any way. If I was fishing I probably would have felt better. I am glad my wife doesn't read this. LOL. Anyway I am glad you guys had a great time and those memories are locked in forever. When is the next outing? I would like to try to make it. Hey Woody I am still alive . I have been real busy with my website and the things I sent you. I have more on the way. I still want to go to Greenwood or Monksville just name the day, and I will make it. See you guys later.

Geeee can't a guy have a bad day fishing without it being splashed all over the internet LOL. Boated 1 pickerel when I really should have had 6! All my fault too bad reaction and bad hooksets, What can you do everyone has days like that now and then.

Frank Thats the John & Gregg Show goes on all the time

What you should notice is the whole time John is razzing my hookset he wasn't fishing but just trying to position the boat to give me the best shot.

And the breakfast was half my fault, when ever he does something like that I usually stop him and make sure he heard right. Funny I was thing he didn't know he ordered potatos!

If John and I aren't busting chops and fooling around take temperature we must be sick.

By the way would have served him right if I pissed in the boat
Oh yea that right wouldn't have even notice with all the water that was rushing in.

Wish I was there! It is just in my back yard (well almost) Just it was the May weekend thing. Had four different events, a Ky derby party, and a dance at the lodge on Sat. & A Frist communion & a 60th b-day on Sun.
The problem with may is that 2 of the weekends are holidays(mother's day & Memorial day) so everybody who wants to have a event in may puts them on the other two weekends.
Seems like it was a good time.
Hope you all enjoy the land that time forgot.

Gregg, I really thought I was listening to a rerun of Abbott and Costello every time you guys went at it. I thought you were going to choke John at the launch as he tried to turn the boat around. (John didn't see your rods sticking out the back, slowing getting ready to break, as they were caught in the brush on-shore.) lol

You can tell you're both good friends by the fact that both of you returned to the launch at the end of the day and that half of your good time was the friendly comedy act that was on-going from launch to load.

MikeD remember the Wild Thing Tubes that Walmart unloaded for $1.50? They accounted for 50% of the picks caught. The weighted in-line spinner worked like a dream.

JohnG, O.L. was superb Mon. Panfish, Bass and picks were stacked up on the southern flats. Soft plastics ruled, even my fusion creations. It was a blast! (Wish I didn't get chilled to the bone - I left my long johns at home and would have had a much easier time of changing in the Ranger.)

Sorry to say we missed a good day on the water but the baby is better now and we'll be heading to silvermine on sat if anyone wants to join us.

John G with pickerel

It hard to see, but if you look closely you can see John G's holding a pick with his famous gloves.
