QuestionFDR State Park, Mohansic Lake & Crom Pond

FDR State Park, Mohansic Lake & Crom Pond
Does anyone have any info on these lakes?
I've been fishing them for about 5 years but I can never get enough time on the water. The lakes have been real good to me over the past few years. Getting small lmb on anything from top water scum frogs to deep diving crank baits. Anyone have any secrets to these waters?

Posted by JOHN G on 2002 PM:

the key word in your question LXP, is "small lm", as undersized stunted fish has been the general complaint of most people who have fished FDR in the past amount of time you are talking about....When I used to fish that water about 12 years ago, I would routinely catch very healthy bass, and 3 and 4 pound bass were often in the equation...funny thing is, I thought that was so great, but Jack Stewart, of Stewart Marine, stopped going there at that time because he used to catch 5 to 7 pounders regularly years before that!! so what happened? maybe I just forgot how to catch better bass? LOL......could be a combination of things: too much harvesting, not enough forage.....you never see baitfish school activity at that water like you do at other places.....but I do know , that in the summer you can certainly catch a good number of small bass there....and in general , for what is worth now, Mohansic seems to be a much better summer lake than at other times for now.....every other or 3rd year, I renew the permit there and give it a couple of cracks again....would love to hear more details about what you saw there this season...... the past few years the lure-de-year has been the classic green
scum frog. we throw that thing deep into the woods and always are able to pull it back out. but we've scored on strikes in close
and open water on the frog. most of our time is spent in crom pond just to stay away from park traffic. this past july 4th, my wife and i were getting hits in the thick pads in the middle of a 90 degree day. of course the trick with the frog is timing your hook set.. one day out early, hooked a five lb-er, beautiful fish.
have had a few four lb-ers and lots of 2-3 lb-ers. green worms, purple worms seem to work at time of season. there is a 6 lb-er
in the big lake with my purple jig in his lip (knot came out fishing at night)
let me just say thanks for this site. the info here has been great

john i have 2 disagree with u.Mohansic is a great big fish lake .i have been fishing it 4 about 6 years and i always catch a good fish there.Last year i had a great day on mohansic.I caught an 8lber a 7 two sixes and i can remember how many 5and 4's.Crom pond is the place 2 fish .The first lake has a ton of small fish in it.The first lake also has a few spots where the monsters lurk.mohansic also has a # of spots that look great but you would have a better chance of catching a bass in a puddle outside your house.in crom there are several spots that hold fish in #ers.In the first lake there are a couple of key spots. There is a hump 2 underground springs (cold water great 4 summer)and a couple of sunken fences.(with thousands of my baits)lol.if i had 2 tell u baits i throw it would be in this order.frog,White tube no weight with rattle, motor oil glitter orange tail slider,3 inch sluggo, jig.Cast the frog high so when it hits the pads the fish look at it.Dont fish slow!!!!!!burn the frog!!!!!!!!!1You miss alot but you get 10 times the strikes.weigh the frog down so they dont knock it in the air and always always use realcraw.I use tournament frogs which are hollow so when the fish grabs it they get a shot of realcraw in there mouth.if u miss the fish on the frog toss the tube.the lighter aproach real pisses them of and bam!!!!!!!
good fishing dennis

Dennis, we don't like to get into arguments here on the board where people do not believe what someone posts, but I have to say in this case, that many many of us have been fishing this water for the past couple of years and have not smelled anything over 2 pounds, and you are claiming, an 8, 7, 6 and NUMEROUS 5s and 4s all in one day? You do realize what you are expecting people to believe here? Even in a Florida water that would be some hell of a catch, and we are talking about a water with Stunted bass in it.....would you like to clarify that please, perhaps you meant those the big ones that you caught OVER the years at Mohansic? thanks........ I'm thinking about fishing FRD Park next summer. Is there much boat traffic and pressure on the two lakes on weekends during the summer. Please advise. Thanks.

John, what is next?! Perhaps people will start claiming they caught 9lbers in Wampus!!!! LOL!

WOW!

Tubeking

Any chance you can give us the locations of said fence and springs? I think I know the hump you're talking about in the northwest corner of the big lake. Depth drops off all around to 20-25 feet. A guy I ran into called the steep slope coming off the Taconic "The Land Of THe Giants". Any truth there? I was out this past Sunday morn in Crom Pond. It was real slow. We picked up 2 small lmb in the stumps to the left of the inlet. Usually pick up fish here. The outlet was real quiet also. A couple of strikes on a small hair jig there, but nothing in the boat.

Keep the info coming!

LOL

Posted by JOHN G on 2002 PM:

Inlexp: I have caught very good fish on the steep drops next to the Taconic in that North WEstern corner of the lake, however, I have never found consistency there from one trip to the other.....the hump that you are talking about is directly opposite that steep shorestretch, but also, I have not had much luck on that hump either.

Last year we were on that lake in July, early morning launch from the keyed area, fishing from about 6 to 12 am, it was one of those scorching 95 degree days....anyway, I had the Senko Baron, Jeff on board, and we used a combination of senko and t rig worming to come up with 35 bass, and not one of them was over 2 pounds......I have caught several 3.5 lbers in past years, and I have a picture of one of them that could post on here.....there have been several very large fish taken out of the water in the past, but very few like that in recent years.....we should have a little get together on there next year...... yes i do fish with outcast.Hey lpbassman help me out.we fished mohansic together and although our biggest was only 4lbs we had some monsters come up on us.help a brother out, lol.U guys are tough.it was a great day my best ever.i figured i had about 30 pounds.I found this pattern with a guy named frank saladino who used 2 be in magnum.although i have learned more about the lake.renegade used to fish this lake all the time and they would have 3 people with over 20 pounds of fish.that day i had the lake 2 myself.john 2 answer your questions no i cant do this everytime i go but i usualy catch one over or near five every time.or at least miss one that big. That day was in early june just after the spawn so i think the big females were still close to the beds in one area.also early in the year before the pads r up all the way there is alot of matted weeds where it is easier to catch fish.In summer they go so deep you miss 10 before u catch one.as far as the humps there is one right near the launch as well as in the back.there is a sunken gate on the oppisite shoreline of where the entrance 2 crom is.One spring is by the boat rental place and the other is by the big patch of lillies in the middle of the lake.anytime u want 2 go let me know dennis

This lake pretty much blows. And to boot there is no more pain in the ass than trying to get your boat on the trailer without using the big motor.

Nick, you guys use your big boats on that lake? I figured it was a special small boat Tx.
I was checking out Outcast Bass Anglers website they have a very nice all time record page covering 16 years of bass fishing.
Celebrate tubeking you beat every record they have keep.

Gregg, Yes we use our big boats on this lake (which is a pain).
As far as tube king he is a nice guy, but I think he should go for an eye exam and a full phsyc evaluation.

Do you need a permit to put a boat in Mohansic and/or Crom Pond? If so, how would I get one. Where do you put the boat in (off
Baldwin Rd)?

Can I put a canoe in either lake? New to area and am looking for good bassin'

thanks
SKeeter

Posted by Bass Rat on 2002 AM:

Skeeter, yes, you do need a permitt. It is $25. You can get it at the park office. There is a horrible asphalt ramp within the park itself.

Nick your word is good enough for me, I'm sure he's a nice guy and means well.

Skeeter,
Baldwin Rd is the key entry and extra $15 with the permit, your not fitting no real bass boat back there and no place to park a trailer.

thanks Bass Rat, is the permit valid from 1/1/03-04? Would you happen to know is the office open on the weekends? Can I put a canoe with trolling motor in there?

Gregg, is it worth the $15? What are the advantages to entering on
Baldwin Rd? I will pay if its worth it.

thanks

Skeeter

Posted by Gregg on 2002 PM:

Two things about the key entry. 1 you can get in before the park opens 2 you don't have to pay the $5 to get in the park when it's open.
And yes you can use a conoe with TM

It's true there are big fish in FDR. A 6lb, 9 oz LM was weighed (and won) in the Jack Steward contest by a guy last year. But an 8, two 7's, and what ever else is a little tall to believe for one day, chief.

Posted by JOHN G on 2002 AM:

as Gregg pointed out, having the keyed entry allows you to fish the lake early in the morning: main park opens at 8 am, so in order to get that topwater and other great early bite that is very good there in the summer especially, you need the keyed entry...also, not as much pressure to get off the water at night, as they do close the gate at the park at dusk, so if you have the keyed entry, you know you will not get stuck there if you hang on a little too long......the "launch" from the keyed area is a mud flat! LOL.....the launch on the main lake is a regular concrete slanted ramp.......... JOHN Gl

Perhaps you're confused?? I've been in Renegade since it began. Never fished there.

The highest wieght to date for any one angler is a little over 19 lbs.(including one over 8) at East Twin.

P.S. Tell Frank I said hello.....

Yeah, a 6'9" LM was weighed in for the Jacj Stewart contest last year, but "an 8 a 7, and two 6's?" I highly doubt that anyplace in the northeast. A picture might make that more credible. Even Mahopac yielded a 25 lb. limit at its best (when then weeds were there in then Kerchal memorial tx).

Posted by pigsticker on 2002 PM:

FDR

Oh.
And as the Maho tx, it was won by Ed Cowan and Frank Giner on spinnerbaits. and Nick Piazza weighed in that 6lb 9 oz LM out of Crom on a power worm in the dying pads in November last year.
Also, trolling a small countown gold Rpala seems to be a pattern to catch the large crappies and enormous bluegills in there in fall.

Posted by Gregg on 2002 PM:

Pigsticker I know you new to the board, but can tell your not new to bass fishing. Yes I think his post was a little over zealous, won't make to big of a deal out of it. Wouldn't want John's delete finger to get itchy. All one would need to do is cheek some of the posted records of some of the local bass clubs and you'll see a 5lber still a big catch, 6lbs plus you might have just tied a club record, 7lb or up is a fish of a lifetime.

There was a time when Mohansic really produced some haugs I'm sure there must still be a couple hiding in that lake.

OK Guys,
I have to back up the TubeKing here. I was not with him on the day he caught these monsters but I used to catch a ton of 5 & 6's up there. HOWEVER, we at Outcast did fish a Team TX up there this past year. For reasons I wont go in to, Tubeking was not fishing in the club TX that day, but he was there. We were both in Cram Pond and I SAW HIM catch single handedly more weight than any of the teams in the TX. He does catch a lot of big fish there. Its also his favorite lake to fish and he knows it better than anyone I know.

Liegh, Tubeking stated he caught over 30 pounds in a single day on this pond. Are you testifying that this is fact? By the way, the tournament you refer to had a high weight of 8 and change, I know cause it was me. That's not a very tough weight to best, and I don't doubt that he might have caught more that given day. But its always easier to win a tournament when you don't have to actually weigh your fish, isn't it? He may know the lake like his own back yard, but to state a single bag of fish, caught in an 8 hour span on that lake (or for any lake in the Northeast) weighing in excess of 30 pounds is a very bold statement to make without any proof.
