Are You Ready For This?? 9.3lb Lm Bass!!!!!

How do I begin to describe a magical morning that might have never been!

To sum up, I caught a 9.3 lb weighed and witnessed LM bass this morning at good ol' Wampus Pond while fishing with the Senko Baron, Jeff......caught on a deep weed edge with a Texas Rig Green colored Power worm, on 1/4oz head, 3odd X-point wide gap hook and 15 pound Fluroclear P line, baitcasting gear....

First of all, I thought we were supposed to get nothing but rain this morning, but the forecast changed yesterday. I had been a little under the weather earlier in the week and wasn't going to fish in the rain, plus, I had no one to go with as of Sat Night....I didn't reach Jeff until 11 pm that night, and once he said he wanted to go, that was it, and I got everything ready, carefully setting up the Texas Rig as I had used it Wed with a blade bait......

the morning was foggy, overcast but that started lifting rather swiftly, we were on the water before 6:30 and worked our way down to the flats where the fish was caught. Now, I had already caught 2 fish on a Watermelon Thrasher and Jeff scored on his Watermelon Senko, so when my 10 pound line was ripped in two by this enormous Pickerel, I went to the baitcasting combo and put on the closest green colored worm and since it had the 15 pound FLuoro, started throwing the texas rig with a little more confidence in the set-up...we were positioned where there were actually two distinct deep edges on either side of the boat, and no sooner had I thrown to the left when that monster sucked it in, a very subtle bite for so large a fish. I had a fantastic hook set, rod high in the air and the fight was on! The drag was set way tighter than I usually do, but that baby went on two screeching runs that probably would have broken many a smaller line, when we finally saw it in the water, we knew it was at least a 4 or 5 pound fish, however, on grabbing the lip, and lifting it, oh my God! I had never felt so heavy a fish!! I was just freaking out, I immediately got the scale and when the fish settled, turned it around to read a rock solid 9.3 on the digital!! Recently, my scale has been compared to others on the water and it has been consistently been a few ounces LESS than other scales, isn't that a relief!! No question here!

this fish was "only" about 24 inches by hand measurement, but it had one of those ridiculous girths and the belly seemed to come up right to its "Chin"! As has been said many times before, Bass only reach so much of a length and then the belly is what decides the weight. Jeff snapped 4 pictures, of which I will have on the board as soon as possible, I just hope the pictures can do justice to the size of this fish, again, could have been longer, but the girth was just unbelievable!

Now, as to the rest of the day, we only fished until
11:30 as I was short on time, and in that 5 hours, we still boated 18 fish, including some other hefty guys that unfortunately now looked so small by comparison!! And here is the best part guys!! Remember in some thread a month ago, where I vouched that Jeff could now throw any type of lure if he had to and fish well on it, although the senko is his preference? Well, he was no fool, and allowed me to rig up a TEXAS RIG for him, which I did, and then he proceeded to catch many fish on that rig, proving what I had already said, that Jeff's skill is limited to a few lures by preference only and that the casting , retrieving , sensitivity , hook set and all the other factors of good fishing are now implanted firmly in him and he was able to fish the T-rig just excellently!

Paul Mattie came by the shore right after the catch and we rowed back to tell him and he ran to the DElLI to get us some coffee, I had to pause at least a half an hour before I was able to throw a line into the water again, the excitement was just too much.

Now, when I think of all the endless casts into good structure and/or cover over the years, it sure makes it seem all worthwhile, I am just so happy that I was able to do it, not only on one of my most beloved little gems of water, that is not known for that kind of size, but also that I was Not alone and was able to do it in front of one of my very best fishing buddies, the inimitable Senko Baron himself.....

Whew, still have to calm down......

BOB, I wouldn't be exagerrating if I tell you from the time it was plucked out of the water, weighed and snapped, couldn't have been more than a couple of minutes , tops, maybe only 2 at most....the "hook" on the Berkely scale immediately held on the lip and gave a readout, 4 snapshots later, I let Jeff feel the weight and then back it went swimming off just fine.... I would love to lie and say it was a drawn out fight, but in reality, outside of the couple of really strong runs, it came in the boat no harder than other big bass of that nature......I believe the whole thing was handled as quickly and neatly as possible, as Jeff can attest to....... John,

Congrats on that beauty of a catch.

I love that feeling just after either landing a big fish or seeing it at the boat and then it takes a little jump and waves its tale goodbye!!!, had one on Welch last week grab a 3" white T rigged grub the fish had to go 4+, enough to get the adrenal gland and heart pumping, as I reached over the side of the boat the fish decided to take another run and off it went.

This is why I like the small lakes and ponds!!!

Hey guys...I seemed to have lost a 9+ lb. bass, anyone seen it....oh JOHN! YOU FOUND IT! All kidding aside, that is a MASTER BASS for a MASTER BASSMAN! Congrats! I'll have to give Wampus Pond another try. You can actually enter the photo in Bassin' magazine's annual Statewide tournament (if it's not too late). I used to read it, and they would post a section with the rules stating that all you had to do was submit a photo of a bass caught between June and August, and the largest entry per state gets to compete for a bass boat and a nice chunk of change in a big tournament down South. Now I don't know what the EXACT details are, and I know that no matter whether you're thinking about tourneys or not right now, you must be exstatic! You've won the contest in my book! Excellent fish - you'll have to show me a bunch of pointers when we all get together at Whaley!

Keep it up!

Puddle,

You are probably correct and the fish may not spawn in spring, but I know I would have done the same exact thing as John, just snapped a picture or two and placed her back in the water to fight another day or at least to live out her life as a bass should live, a bass that big and old deserves that much respect and who knows maybe you will be the one to go here and catch her again.

John and I discussed on the phone last night that he should get a fiberglass mount done, if for nothing else than to warm and refresh his memories over those cold winter months for years to come.

Why are they getting in the way of the constant tournaments that fish that lake every weekend? LOL

EW if you told everyone where you catch your biggest fish does that guarantee everyone will be able to catch them?

Different fisherman have different skills and approaches and will come up with diferent results.

If no one talked about the places they fish the board would have 50% less posts and be 1/2 as fun.

after this weekend, rentals end at Wampus Pond and you need a special Westchester County permit to fish there..

Also, many bassers I know will eschew the thought of rowing to fish, which is the only thing allowed there...

And , of course, as Gregg points out, knowing HOW to fish a certain water makes all the difference in the world.....the first full season that I started fishing, I fished Wampus 45 times in one season!!! what a way to learn the changes of the bassing cycle by mainly fishing one water in that way...the only other water I fished that year besides Wampus was Cross River where I had a boat at the time...that was it for one full year: Wampus or Cross River....again, great way to learn a water....

Earthy, we have spoken over the phone about all your "special" places on the Peconic, does everyone who goes there and forge get a shot at some of the behemoths that you have dug up? You know exactly what I mean.....

I hope that fish IS still eminently catchable and I can only hope that it is returned to the water again to get larger, I would love nothing better than to see anyone, myself or anyone else, hook into that fish next year and have it top 10 pounds....sure wish I could have tagged it!!!

TalkingEqually Important, or more so..

is the fact that you did return that beauty to the water and the water's gene pool of it's resident bass.
Fish like that are extremely rare here in NY, and having them in them able to continue to breed new stock is great.
Not only will others have a chance of catching it, but also it's offspring too, helping to insure future great bassing for all of us.

Woody, I believe that Earthy did catch his fish on L.I.!

Woody.

I have taken a considerable number of 7-8 lb lm up here in the frozen north though no 9's. No i don't often target lm.
The moderate temps, longer growing season and fertility of LI waters improves the chances as does continued travel south.
I would have no reason to doubt that earthy took his 9's on LI.

This is a real accomplishment but statistically more likely there than here.

Wood, from our 2 hour conversation today you know where I stand....

Feel free to give me a ring after you get done with the saw if you find out anything regarding the next few weeks

Earthy I guess 4 is the magic number. Haven't heard a comment as to my 2 mentioned....not that I'm complaining

Mr. Jig, I think Woods line of thinking is that there are less waters "down there" than what we enjoy within sight of the backdoor, I don't think the more favorable temps came into the thinking.....

Gregg it is my understanding that maho at one time was a heavily fished tourney lake. Back in the pre-carp days and about the same time In Fisherman filmed a segment(sure looks different now than in that segment) there for their old 1 hour specials. From there it went into a decline(in both fisherman on it and tournies) after the weeds were gone mostly because people weren't aware of how to catch but of course the fish were still there. Including a lot more smallmouth bass. I am not sure if they were as plentiful before the weeds left or not. Of course now they are plentiful and people know it...

When did all of these tournies make a showing at Maho after the decline of them for a spell..? And are they as heavy now as they were pre no weeds. Just curious, not like i fish it much at all.

You should hear the history that I know of the bodies of water I DO fish...

I am sure Scully or Paul Mattie would be the men to ask.

I am quite confident that we both know what a 9 Lb bass looks and feels like.

See now, that is what I have to do next Earthy, go somewhere like Florida, or Texas or California and get that big baby like the 13-9 you caught at Ocala.......that would be the next logical progression if I am worried about size, however, all in due time, I have no doubt that after a couple of years and the last guy is out of college that I will start to do some fishing trips like that and then gun for the even bigger boys.......until that time, I will just continue to enjoy all of these fun waters that I have around me..... Welcome back Mr.T...their are alot of us who aren't too sure what a 9lb. bass looks like never mind feels like. I think that it's important when people make claims of catching such fish that there be some documentation. Times have changed and the portable digital scales humble alot of fisherman. I know there are others who feel how I do. Some guys come on here posting "I caught a 20 someting inch bass so it had to be X number of pounds." I'd love to see Earthy's old reel to reels and I sure others would too. I agree with Mr. Jig that because of L.I weather pattern being different from the rest of us upstaters that 9 lb bass are possibly out there. I still looking for that 7lber...
Keep casting......

Castaway.

You are right of course in your observation that an accurate scale
can be humbling.

I discourage the use of scales these days because after necessarily using a calibrated Chatilon for many years in biological studies, i came to feel that fish should not endure xtra handling merely to satisfy our curiosity.

I don't think Trav meant to discourage Earthy from showing the films to which you refer. He was simply assuring Eathy that no proof was necessary on his account.

Heading out to annoy some fish.
Have a good holiday.

That would be a ZEROED out scale

9lb's are somewhat rare in these neck of the woods....
Craig, if you are talking about reel to reel I am guessing you would have been a youngster...
Now a kid catching a 9lb+ fish would have made the news where I come from !!!!!!!!!!
In looking at the EEBA results the weights do not reflect lots of weight.... I believe only one person caught a 5lb fish +.
I guess You know where they live Earthy .

Woodsman

Actually Woodrow, I indicated I had the set up because I picked it up cheap a while back. I would really like to get one of those small palm recorders and mount it on my boat. I haven't taken a fish that big in about 4 years or so. My first NY'er was caught in 1995. The Florida boy was in 1991. Rare...yes, impossible no. Trav, I certainly knew what you meant, we seem to be on the exact same wavelength these days. I appreciate the emails and talks we've had. I know you are on the level. I just wanted to reiterate that guys are all hung up about length of fish and they shouldn't be. It is all relative to ther girth as well. John's fish was only 25 and change, I'm sure almost everybody would expect a 9+ to be longer...in reality it doesn't have to be that way.
Woody, I've always made it a point to tell guys that I do not think tournament fishing and trophy fishing can be consitently mixed. When I fish a tx, I am fisihing for a limit. When I want a trophy, I'm fishing for one bite that I may not get all day thus making for a poor tournament weight. I always go for a limit then try to upgrade. The weights for our club are not bad at all considering the size of our waters and the extreme pressure they get.

Castaway. Of course I cannot nor would I speak for others when it comes to claims about numbers, sizes etc etc. I rarely if EVER post anything on the fishing reports page of this board because quite frankly, knowing what I catch is just fine for me. I have caught big stream browns, largemouths, smallies, walleyes and outsized pike on my own terms without telling anyone because I didn't feel the need nor do I ever to have "verification" of anything I do.

I was telling Woody just yesterday on the phone that when he and I hook up soon for him to bring a camera. NOT for this board but my family would like to have some pics of what I catch from time to time and I don't get a lot of them because I fish alone 99.9% of the time....that far outweighs anything I care to have to prove to anyone. Woody I will get that pic from my mom of when I was 15-16 and bring it down for ya to look at....

Earthy, that is an excellent point you made about the difference between tourney fishing and recreational as far as going for size!

Don, glad to see you happy about that, no way was I going to harm that fish, I already told others that if we did not have a camera on the boat, I would have not taken a picture as I would have had to keep the fish out of the water for at least 10 minutes and that never entered my mind....

Gregg, I'm sorry I missed your post about telling people where I catch big fish. I was honestly poking fun at both John and Paul fover the Mahopac thing. I did notice all season that Maho was a different lake this year. I have made it a point not to tell people exactly where I am catching big fish. I fish the Peconic frequently, I live close by and it is a great fishery. I do have tons of spots but it certainly isn't close to being my big bass mecca despite my past catches there. I don't even tell my close friends anymore where I'm going......usually.

Gregg I see your point but I certainly would not want to be responsible for adding pressure to my sacred places. I've done my homework for years to get to the point where I am now. I am not going to give it up and let someone come in and reap the benefits without working for it. Call me selfish but it is reality. All it takes is one guy to let everyone in on a good place and it could get ruined. That is why I have had a large amount of success here on LI....... Secrecy!!!! I've spoken about fun places like my Lake X but you will almost never see a post from me about big fish lakes. I give a lot to the board, I just can't give it all away though.

Earthy color me "selfish" too.

I truly enjoy sharing the how but i'm dam.ed careful about the where.
I can tell you from long experience that on a favorite lightly fished 100% release lake, after even 1 boat visits a cove with my spots marked and with my baits in their box,and my anchor positions and depth readings noted, MY fishing in that cove will suffer for days.
Even though there is no long term damage to the resource thru this sharing, i want to do it.. WHY??

John

Buddy....what can I say that hasnt already been said. A true monster for the northeast, or anywhere this side of Castaic for that matter. Fantastic job....can imagine the moment, the quickening of the pulse, the oh no Im gonna loose it thought creeping into your head. Then the prayer....oh God please, please...Ill be good I will I will. lol All thats left to say is #$#%%$%WOW !

Woodsman, I know of a 9.04 caught on Muscoot Reservoir in 1991. I know of a 9.11(OOS) caught on Titicus in 1993. and I caught a 8.10 and an 8.04 on Croton Falls Reservoir. Both of those I caught in the exact same location. One was caught in May (OOS) and the other in July. I believe to this day they were the same fish.

Largest verified largemouth bass caught on
Long Island was to the best of my knowledge caught by Doc Bardick, I believe it was 8.14 and was caught in Swan Lake.

There was rumored to have been a 10.06 caught at
Blydenberg Lake in the mid 90s, but no one seems to be able to substantiate that claim.

Travis...tournaments on Mahopac go back as far as I can remember, about 1979. The information I have is that in the 80s the fishing was very good, but as the weed increased the fishing went through the roof. By the early 90s, the average fish you caught in
Lake Mahopac was close to three pounds. The pressure on this lake from 91 through 96 was incredible.

After the introduction of the Grass Carp and the dissapearence of the weeds, the average size of the bass IMHO now appears to average about 2.04 pounds. Still not to shabby. The fishing is not what it once was, but that fact has nothing to do IMHO with there no longer being aquatic vegetation in the lake. I believe the lake is in transition, a common occurence in many lakes throughout the country.

The fish are still there, and in good quantity. The lake is perhaps not what it was during those 90s hey days, but not far off. My club records however indicate there has been little if any change, in fact our tournament results are better now than during the 90s.
Tournament pressure on the lake is still heavy, though about half of what it once was. The verified lake records are....Heaviest five fish....Don Caggiano, 24.12 ozs. six fish team....Ed Cowan and Frank Giner, 30.00 even. Lunker largemouth....8.06 Tom Whittle and Lunker Smallmouth, Frank Costa, 5.12. If anyone knows of any verified weights or fish that beat these, please let me know.

Nice post Scully. Although I've never been to Mahopac, I heard that the depletion of the weeds has caused way better smallie action. Also didn't you say that you caught an eight pounder somewhere on Long Island? Do you or anyone else think that the new NY state record largemouth will be caught soon and also do you think the record will come from Long Island? I think that if they do drop the stucture in Ronko and the bass fishery picks up, Massive bass Large and Smallmouth will be caught from there. - Joe

Scully, I forgot about Bill "Doc" Bartick...my Dad and he are into model trains and they hang out some. Doc has a fish of over 11lbs from Ronkonkoma that was caught in the 70's. I know he has it mounted and I will ask my Dad to get the true weight. It surely was a state record at the time and I do not know the reason that is wasn't certified.

yes I did

bass64

Yes I caught an 8 pounder out of
Patchogue Lake in the early 90s. I believe that the next state record will come out of one of the Reservoirs in Weschester & Putnam County. I have had on 2 fish I believe may have been over 10 pounds and I have spoken to a few anglers who claim to have had fish of this size on as well.

With the warmer than average winters recently the bass in these bodies of water have been subjected to longer growing seasons. Although from October thru May they grow perhaps 5%. There is little pressure and an abundance of fish holding cover and supply of forage. My guess for the record would be New Croton Reservoir.

There is a chance it could come from
Long Island, however, with all the pressure on the Long Island lakes I beleive that if there were fish of that size here (over 10) they would have shown up by now.

In an earlier post someone thought John G fish would have been 10 to 11 years old. I think it was my good friend "Hooked Solid". Its my guess Johns fish was closer to 20 years old. Growth rates in the Northeast section of the country are slow. a 12 inch largemouth is normally in its fourth growing season. In the New York State Bass study of 1977-1980 bass from Amawalk Reservoir were checked for age determination and growth rate. They do this by taking scale samples from below the lateral line at the tip of the pectoral fin. This study listed a 14" largemouth as being five years old. Studys from
Black Lake listed a fish of the same size as being six years old and from Chataqua Lake the same growth rate was found.

This is why I believe that Johns fish had to be at least 18, and possibly as much as 20 years old.
