Had a good breakfeast, and met a great bunch
of guys! Then off to the water we go.
All got launched by
9:30am
The bites were a little slow, but it did'nt matter.
I was on the water and thats the best part.
I finally put on a black/green worm,not weight.
First cast I got a Pickerel about 12"
That was it for me!I left about
12:00pm.
Headed down to Croton Res.Got another Pickerel
(I guess they like me)Left about three for home.
Thanks to all that showed up.Thanks to Scott for
putting it all together.
I hope the rest of the guys did better than me!

Thanks Scott for putting it together!!!!!!!! And thanks to BOBN
for the ride up and on the water>

Truthfully , the fishing could have been better BUT Not the friendships !!! This is what NYBASS is all about.
One of the best parts of these things is meeting a few new people at each one. And hopefully some of us will fish again together.

Butch -- Hope you picked up your radio from Scott.

Took a few pictures as we were putting the boats in and will try to post them soon!!!!!
Fish or no fish , i hope everyone enjoyed thier day .

Thumbs upJust a tough day for all except HalfBassed

Well you either kill'em at the kill or it leaves you with a little skunky smell but not total skunksville.

Mike was the first on the boat to have a fish, a small slimy pickerel, the last that would be seen for a few hours, but we had many follows and missed fish, finally I boated another small pickerel.

On most of the other boats as with Lastcast it was the same story, 1 singular pickerel per person.

Rob(theole34) and his dad's boat, Rob managed to catch a small bass and I believe a couple of small pickerel(I am sure Rob will come on with his report later).

BobN with Pete L riding shotgun put one fish in the boat, also a pickerel.

I just got HalfBassed's report via cell phone, still there at
7:45pm and he needs to have his name changed to the BashaBasser, he figured the place out today with double digits in bass!!!

I will let him tell you the numbers and what he used.

HVbassmaster was on HalfBassed's boat but had to leave early so I did not get a report from him yet, maybe he will be on to tell us what he did.

Everyone struggled today to find a pattern, all the pickerel were shallow, Mike D's pickerel came on a senko early in the day and mine on a 4" straight tale worm T rigged weightless. It was a cold windy partially overcast day with weird April weather, a few days ago summer heat, cool to seasonable temps and tonight dropping into the teens with a high tomorrow in the 30s with snowcussin

Sorry guys things got a bit confused for the semi-live report but out on the Bashakill most peoples cell phones could not get a signal so there was little communication.

Thanks guys for coming, great seeing the guys I have met before and great to meet the guys I met for the first time today.

Next time we spank that place rather than being spanked!!!

thrashers, fin-s, split tails....

ok here goes...

my day started out at
4am, a cup of coffee, a breakfast sandwich, and a bottle of water. 140 miles later my dad and i arrived at the diner scott had suggested. a quick sandwich, a handful of greeting, and a cup of coffee... we were on our way to bashakill.

bashakill.... weeds with water around them! wow! and it is not even overgrown yet. we launched my dads canoe, and moved out to the channel. we chose to proceed north.

i threw senkos, senko knock offs, senko knock off - knock offs, spinnerbaits, inline spinners, worms of all sizes shapes and colors, shallow, and medium divers, snoozer tubes. of all these combos.. snoozer tubes got bites, and nudges... that's it. my dad got a pickerel on a snoozer black red flake. 12" and furious, but we smelled like fish.

when all else fails for me i usually size down to a small jig spinner to play around, and locate pan/baitfish. color, type, and location help me figure out what i want to do.

small jig spinner made by a friend helped me land my first fish of the day on the second cast, a 12" pickerel. some more casts and one more short picerel a little bit later.

moved on to a spot where we spooked a ton of baitfish. started throwing a senko knock off, and bagged a bass... pic below. what a beauty. played the same game for a while, thinking i was on because halfbassed was in same type of area, and he caught a bass at the same time. no good.

moved back towards the launch throwing the jig spinner the whole way.. on 13" pickerel. no pattern, just mind numbing, relentless cast and retrieve.

about 20 yards from the launch i started throwing a snoozer thrasher. got slammed, and i mean like a freight train, by a slightly larger pickerel. he threw the last snoozer pearl thrasher i had, so i switched to a similar bait in a gold shiner color. i got hit hard by another two pickerel.. almost back to back casts. i then recv'd a message on my phone the mets had lost to
montreal, and i left for the ramp.

traded a few stories, and words with scott e, and mikeDinNYC then split. Thanks for the water to fish scott e. thanks for the fish GOD. thanks for the sandwiches mike. thanks for putting this site together frank.

hearing pete l got the thrasher bite too... might have been the ticket. and i want to know what all the damn norwegian hollering was about up river!!! how'd you do halfbassed?????

my big bad bass for the day .... lol.

bobn...yeah, the traffic was the worst i've ever seen it... it took me 1 1/2 hours to get to basakill and 3 hours to get home... at least i had some tapes of my favorite long island wedding band to listen to

anyway, a great time with friends and i can't wait to do it again!

It was a fun day Butch was a good host on the boat.
I wish I could have fished longer the mind was willing but the body had other plans. I could not shake the cramps out of the legs and well had to call it a early day.
Halfbass had some early blow-ups runnin a dark colored worm (black , or maybe june-bug with a char tail) over the lilly pads, had a couple of bites but no hook sets. He was useing 6# test and that might have been the ticket.
I got a couple of nibbles on seikos and on a baby pork rin but nothing to ste a hook on
It was "reel" fun puting faces to names and I had a blast with Butch.
Thanks for a good mornig out nad hope to do it again soon.

I gotta tell you guys, Butch (HALFbassed) has skunked me out twice this year already! Yeah, I've had my moments of glory over him in the past, but you know what they say:

"He who laughs last, laughs best!"

I'll say this about Butch. His simple, uncomplicated approach to fishing stands in stark contrast to the attention that many of us pay to details. Yet, the guy still gets results.

Way to go, Butch and everyone. I loved the pictures, and I sure hope that I can get downstate for a NYBass Get-Together this year for some of that nice action out there.

Sorry it took so long to get this post up , my wife has been occupying the puter w/homework.

Well the day started out with
5:00 wake up I was so excited that I just couldnt wait to get out there. As for me I really enjoyed the company even though everybody split up and went there different ways.

I got picked on a little for throwing a lure from shore before anybody else could get there poles out. But I wanted to get something right there! Showing off a little I guess. Kevin and I got started and on our way out and I hooked into a LARGE pickerel on the second cast. He was easily 25" but he cut the line in about 10 seconds. That was on a black worm with a chartreuse tail. I thought that was my only one. Over the next couple hours the hits came few and far between. Then I found another black w/chart....... worm,I put it on and wack. The first bass of the day or so I thought. He had another idea though he turned ripped the worm in half and waved bye with his tail. Taking with him the only bait that the fish really wanted. Kevin was not doing to well in the canoe. (he was cramped) His ankles and knees were bothering him, and he was leaving at 2 anyway so he decided to spend the rest of the day with his family. But I really enjoyed having him in my boat. He is welcome back any time. I would like to get to know him better since his trip was cut short.

The afternoon was a completely different story though. Since I was by myself I decided to hit the weeds head on. I found a spot that I knew had fish, and literaly tried everything I had. I got to a small red worm that I picked up at the outdoor show this year. On the first cast I had a fish follow. He followed it FOUR MORE TIMES then he got it. It was a small pickerel 14" long but it was a fish and thats all that mattered.

Several pickerel later I made my way towards Scott E. Then I got my first bass of the day. he was only 13" and .9 lbs but he felt good because I was using my Pinacle Ultra Light set up.I was getting hits on fast retrieves skipping accross the top of the water w/no weight. And the red worm was the best color of the day. I shared my "secret" with Scott E and he started catching fish too. The pic of me on Mike D`s link is the first Bass of the day.

After several more bass We saw a VERY LARGE fish come out of the water. Best guess 32" . Scott and Mike saw it too. I didnt hook it but it was a treat to see. A little while later I drifted over a HUGE FISH, it may have been the same one, but I am not sure. Even though the water was very clear I could not acurately tell what it was.It was large and green and the right shape for a bass but I couldnt see his head ,This fish was definately 36" long and 6 or 7 "s accross the back!!!!!!!!!!!! A monster I tried to dangle a worm in front of his face with no results. Then I tried to put the biggest spinner I had on to snag it in the mouth as soon as it barely touched him he was gone. Pushing a large wave in front of him.WOW that was cool.

Scott and Mike left to check on the others and then I moved towards the dead trees standing behind the island. There are alot of fish back there. I spent the rest back there. The fish were all around me, and I finally figured out that if the fish followed the lure you keep reeling untill you see the open mouth then stop. Once I got that down I got alot more hookups.

So to sum up the count stands at 16 bass all of which were 1lb or less. And 8 pickerel all shorts. There could have been more pickerel because I didnt pay as much attention to the # of picks. But it was at least 8.

It was a great day. Great friends, and great fishing what more could you ask for.

P.S. I will let the pictures Mike put in tell my story because I didnt take that many, and the ones that I did are of my hand as I was alone in the boat.

I already did! This is Butch! HALFbassed! One and the same. And I would enjoy the chance to fish with you, John. And I did give away all my secrets. The most important one is persistance. But it does feel good to have caught so many fish on a day that so few people caught anything at all. So hopefully everybody will remember this when the tables are turned. And I know the tables will turn because there are plenty of days when I come home empty -handed.
I look forward to the next time we get together. And maybee next time John will come out in the Stealth Basser with me.It is a very stable canoe. You can ask Scott E. I was rowing and casting all while standing in the canoe.
Well thank you again Scott for organizing everything.

Nawwwhhhh........ That has NEVER happened to ya, before, Butchy!

So glad you had a great time, bud! I knew that you'd be on fish, you dog! Like I said before, I've rather silently admired your simple approach to fishing. Always have. Always will...

I'd sure love to have a day where you and I finally go fishing and BOTH of us either come a way with a bass-o-rama or we BOTH catch the skunk! :P

Can't wait to get back down there.

P.S. Remember this fish, buddy?

Bashakill

This Weekend is a tough one but I am planning to get back next Saturday (May 11th?), Then it's off to Long Island for Mothers Day. Hopefully the weather will be warmer and not so windy. If anyone is interested it would be great to meet up with you. I usually fish by the bridge due to the lack of a boat. Has anyone gone striper fishing?

the other Pete

Posted by HALFbassed on 2002 PM:

Thumbs upMunch a bunch

The Bashakill was hot today but I am not talking temperature.

I'll stop for a couple minutes I told myself and two hours later I had conquered the Bashakill once again. FORTY-SIX bass in two hours and not a single pickerel among them. They were very active despite the cool water temp 52deg the fish would follow almost every thing that I threw, but I couldnt get them to latch on.
After fifteen minutes I got a little frustrated and lifted a rock picked up a worm and threaded it on. It had barely hit the water when the bass broke the surface. The first one was 1.4 lbs not a bad start! A few dinks and a few more around 1lb and I hit paydirt! At first I thought I had gotten snagged then the snag started to fight and WHAT A FIGHT. I had 4lb test flourocarbon line not what I want to fight a large fish with especially with the amount of weeds that are there.I finally got him to shore and weighed him in at 4.5 lbs. I put him in my portable livewell and brought him home to take a pic. ( He was released again unharmed) Wow what a day that was a real good time.

By the way the water level is up 3 feet from the day we were out on it!

I may be able to get out there next weekend I will try to make arrangements for that. Things are pretty confusing right now so I will try.I will know more next week.

Holy Moses! Sounds like you found some action. I'll have to make sure I bring some worms the next time I go. Where is the boat launch that you use? I drove around all over and couldn't find the spot. I've fished from the so called launch off of 209 but that spot is tough to get anything in.

pete

Posted by HALFbassed on 2002 PM:

Yes, I did catch all those fish on worms!!

John to make things better they were all caught from shore!!!!

Besides the Bashakill is so flooded right now that the channel is almost invisable. You cant see any of the weeds. Well except the dead ones from last year.

I tried fishing from all four parking areas, 2 off 209, the bridge (thats where I caught the largest # of fish), and the Back road boat ramp.

I am going to try to arrange to go this next weekend. If somebody is going out for stripers on the
Hudson please leave room for me on the boat, and let me know the time and place.
