impossible for me to narrow this down almost, but the three that pop into my head the quickest are Light my Fire....Stairway to Heaven and Comfortably Numb.......that would be Doors, Zep and Floyd respectively....... JOHN G

Although I agree Linkin Park kicks some butt & they are a rockin band.

I think they have to substantially add to their resume & prove the test of time before you can start labeling them THE BEST BAND TO EVER WALK ON STAGE.

I heard that statement made by alot of pumped up young guys about alot of bands that have since dropped off the face of the earth.

RE: Guns & Roses,
Pearl Jamb, Sound Garden etc.

Think about it. Before you go throwing a granade like that statement out there. You just might wind up getting yourself BLOWED UP! LOL

Funny, most of my friends were incredable homo-phobes and wouldn't think of paying to see that band, or Elton John or
Bowie for that matter. But you gotta admit, those boys could rock.
That Queen show was the best I've ever been to. Thay made quite an experience of it.

Greg, I was a big Who fan growing up too. Yes, they did rock on that show and blew everyone away. With that said I'm sad to say I won't be checking them out this summer. The tickets went on sale last week w/ the cheapest being $125.00 for nose bleed seats!!! Are you kidding..?????

The first time I saw them was at Shea stadium in 82" w/ the Clash and David Johanson. What a CRAZY night and great show. The first time I ever hitch-hiker in the city...I saw them twice on the Quadrophenia tour a few yrs. ago and they were GREAT (w/ Jason Bonham on drums). The Punk meets the Godfather and Real Me were tremendous. The Ox is the best bass player I've seen...Getty Lee comes in a close second.

Now I guess they want to build up their 401k's. I wouldn't pay that much to see anyone(unless Jimi came back)...Paul McCarthy is charing more $$$ then the Who for his shows....Yes, I know they'll sell-out but to expensive for my taste....
Keep rocking.........................

Noel , New Wave

In my house ( wife, two boys 11 + 14) consistent discs played

Sevendust - Animosity
Creed - Weathered
SOAD - Toxicity
Nickleback - Silver side Up
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Any Dream Theater, Queensryche, Tool.

New WAve 83 - I have seen alot of bands in my day and that is a pretty bold statement about LP. Don't get me wrong I do like them, but they are no more original than what ANTHRAX or what the RHCP did in mixing the Rap/ Rock stuff. I personally think that System of a Down is more original than any of these bands. Always keep an open perspective on music, ones tastes may not be anothers , but that is what makes it art. A true test for a musical group is can they pull it off live. That is why I admire Qryche and Dream Theater so much. I understand that these bands have more of a cult following and do not represent the general taste. But as long as I likem that all that matters. I can tell ya right now if you gave me tickets to the front row of a Stones concert I would not go. Just not my cup of tea. But I would pay to see the two afformentioned groups time and time again. I know they can play and sing it live. Linkin Park i have heard live and they seem to be able to handle it live, the emotion is there and the vocals are ok. We will see over time.

other great rock's song BTW " SAD but True" "Plush" " CHOP SUEY"

"Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleedin"

Posted by wnybassman on 2002 PM:

Paulie,

Absolutely! The true test is live performance.

I saw Queensryche when they opened for Metallica many moons ago, and both bands put on a hell of a show. I also saw GNR wen they headlined with Metallica and Axel seemed to just go through the motions. Kinda ruined the whole show.

Another reason for me liking Savatage, they have a great deal of spirit on stage, and looks like they just downright like to be there. When I saw them in
Rochester last year, it was in a small venue (Tremors Night Club) and only about 250-300 people were there max. That didn't bother the band at all, actually I think it improved there performance. Yet they go to Europe and sell out arena's, go figure?

As for bands selling out overseas like
Japan and Europe. They appreciate good muscianship. That is why Gary Moore is tops in Europe and Asia and George Thorogood is not, People over seas know better! To me though it is not enough to play well, you have to play with feel!! That is what made Stevie Ray Vaughn so great - the FEEL!

i've got to say it's all relative.

the music is all good. the bands mentioned are all good.
you can have a great band in a shizznitty venue, and it's all wasted.
a shizznitty band in a good venue and a great crowd could work out.

i've seen iggy pop boo'd off stage in
North Carolina opening and announcing for heart and whitesnake.

i've seen the cult boo'd off stage opening for metallica.

same for great white opening for judas priest.

some things just don't mix well....

but when it all comes together.. the band, the venue, the crowd.. venus aligns with
neptune and whammo.. you have the show of your life.

time tested, live performers are my favorites. i download live rare performances from gnutella and morpheus, because you can't get them anywhere else..

ever heard Ozzy sing "Stayin' Alive" with Dweezil Zappa?
primus doing "the thing that should not be" or "Have a cigar"?
the whole nativity in black tribute to sabbath thing w Rob zombie, 1000 H, Dave Mustaine, bruce
dickinson, ozzy etc.

i love that stuff. different and pretty cool.

sorry my .02 rant.
wow. sorry. gotta go take a prozac now.

Stones great show, Clapton, decent show, Motley Crue...wicked shows, Plant, decent show, Ozzie, great show, Areosmith 2x, great shoes, Dokken, nice, and a host of others. The only band I have never seen and really wanted to was the Ramones.

Top live performances I have witnessed.

1. Dream Theater backing up ELP and
Deep Purple Tweeter Center in MA. August 1999.
ELP were very good, Deep Purple ok, Dream Theater blew both bands away in terms of musical profciency and emotion. Fans who came out to see ELP and Deep were absolutley astounded by DT's performance.

2. Queensryche -
Jones Beach July 1995. one word AWESOME. Played the whole Mind Crime album, lots of old stuff from Rage and Empire along with a huge dual interactive movie screen. The sound was phenominal espcially for an out door concert.

3. Rush - May 1981 Moving Pictures Tour -
Providence civic center.
Had a broken foot and went to the concert on crutches. Sat behind Neil Pert in the back of the stage. nuff said! A truly memorable event.

4. Journey - August - 1981- CapeCod Coliseum. First concert with my honey ( we still get out once in while after 20 + years BTW)!
No air conditioning, really hot!, neither of us feeling too well. But what a perfromance! Steve Perry hit EVERY single note right on. Neil Schon was great and the incredible Steve Smith on drums. A night we will never forget!

5.
Kansas - Dec 1979. Monlolith tour. Boston Garden. Great show.
Steve Walsh is a great lead performer, the rest of the band did not move too much , but the performance was flawless!

6. Tubes -
Oct 31 1981 - Orpheum in Boston. FEE - QUAAYLUDE - White Punks on Dope - Mondo Bondage - 2 drummers! An Experience!

7. The Police - Nov . 1980 Orpheum in
Boston. Zenyata Mondata tour. Three guys who knew how to put on a show.

8. Dream Theater -
Toads Place Christmas 1999. Electric Acoustic set. Played lots of covers, Zep, Pink, Rush, Gwar, Metallica, U2 and a stunning version of O Holy NIght! My wife Gret got a drum stick and Mikey D (My brother) was in the house!

9. Rush - 1994 Counterparts tour Meadow lands in NJ! a great tribute to all their old classics and just missed getting backstage!
The ole geezers can still play!

10. Gino Vannelli -

Dokken!! How could I forget about Dokken, they were my favrote band for a couple years in high school. I saw them a few times, but they really put on a show when they opened for Aerosmith.

Scorpions are on top of my favorite live acts as well.

Ok the worst performances I have ever seen.

1. The Cars - December 1980 -
Providence Civic Center. Truly the worst performance I have ever seen from a Major act. Could'nt sing or play, sound was awful. No stage presence. Just awful!!!

2. Second half of Black and Blue tour - Summer 1980
Hartford Civic Center. First half was Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio.
This was the good half. The second was Blue Oyster Cult. A Terrible uninspired performance. Buck Dharma , whom I like as a guitar player was so so live and the rest of the band you can keep.

3. Pat Metheny - Center Stage -
Providence - August 1980.
I love fusion jazz of the 70s and early 80s, but seeing this guy was like watching paint dry. At least when I saw Billy Cobham i took a drum stick to the head to keep me on my toes!!

4. Frank Zappa - June 1980 - Providence Civic Ctr. - Truly one of my all time favorite performers, but the sound system failed and you could not hear anything. Really disapointing from a genius and a man driven to perfection.

5. Kiss - April 1979
Providence Civic Center. Went for a goof. Yep I used to have to learn all the classics like Strutter , Deuce, Firehouse etc.... A great light and fireworks show, but they caint play dem instruments. Sound was muffled, Vocals who cares!

One of the best concerts i ever saw was last year in Huntigton. Richie Havens was playing and he absolutely smoked the entire room. It was him a guitatist and a bongo player and they were playing stuff that you just can't exprience on an album. He covered all along the watchtower and did it just as good as Hendrix. He also claims that he origially wrote it, not bob dylan. Also I saw Claptons last show at the garden which was amazing.

90's bands that rock:
SOAD
Incubus
foo fighers
weezer
BIG WRECK

Stevie Ray was the best, I am still in awe every time I hear Life by the drop.

As for concerts, I have been told I have been to a few and TESLA sticks is the one I remember. So it must have been good.

But the absolute best artist, country rock or folk has to be Steve Earle. I always have some in the house, car, and truck.

Cast-A-Way: YESSSS!!!!! FINALLY A JETHRO TULL FAN

"Question all as to their ways and learn the secrets that they hold" - a great song "Cup of Wonder" (From one of their best albums!)

My list varies from time to time, but I'll list ten of my fav's:

1.) "
Kashmir" - Led Zeppelin
2.) "The Ocean" - Led Zeppelin
3.) "Hymn 43" - Jethro Tull
4.) "Pump It Up" - Elvis Costello
5.) "Tarkus" - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
6.) "Solisbury Hill" - Peter Gabriel
7.) "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" - Billy Joel
8.) "Join Together" - The WHO
9.) "Another Nail For My Heart" - Squeeze
10.) "Superstition" - Stevie Wonder

I'm sure I'm leaving out some very important ones close to my musical heart, but this was a sample - a cool album side, if you will!

Jared C. "So Put Me On a Highway, and Show Me a Sign....and Take It To the Limit.....One More Time!

Questionfav rock songs

Tough one. I guess I'd have to say these are my top 5:

1.- Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
2.- Dream On - Aerosmith
3.- L.A. Woman - Doors
4.- Honky Tonk Women - Rolling Stones
5.- Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots

Maybe #5 surprises some of you, but this IS my opinion, and I've just gotta add that song in there.

Al
