Thumbs downRoland and Lee not being honest

Not that I want to draw attention to a lake that gets hammered way too much, but the small Connecticut lake Roland Martin and Lee Bailey fished on TV today was MAHOPAC! All they had to do was call "it" a NY lake rather than a Connecticut lake, so why do you think they changed the location? Too far from Mahopac to Foxwoods maybe? If they'd lie about that they probably lie about everything else too!

Maybe they didn't want to either.

Whatever their reasons for lying were, I'm glad they did.

P.S. What show was that on?? Would of liked to see it. Any clue if it will be aired again?

Thumbs downFishing with Roland Martin

it was a little hokey with spin cat reels, senkos and an aquaview camera, looked to be mid summer. I found that interesting also since Lee caught a check at Scully's Halloween event at Mahopac and told everyone that that day was his first ever on the lake!!

Paladin, most of us are aware of what people do when filming TV shows, so that is not that much of a shocker, however, your quoting Lee as to being on Maho for the first time on Scul's contest, this bears a little more scrutiny...

first of all, which year are you talking about?

and second of all, when quoting a person second handed like that, I think it is unfair to that person, unless they have the access or ability to come back and answer such an allegation...

I am going to contact Scul and see if Lee would like to shed light on this thing....

embelish the truth! use pre caught fish. fish farms not open to the public. shoot hours and hours of film to make it look as if many fish were caught in a short time frame. edit it all together to make a "super clean, non reality, half hour infomercial that is fun to watch, but far from true.

misinformed.....

Gentleman

I took Lee out on
Lake Mahopac for the first time in 1994. Since then I have spent at LEAST half a dozen days there with him on the lake including two filming episodes for his TV show "Catch The Dream" which began airing a few years back on COX Cable.

As a favor to me, Lee had promised never to reveal the location or the name of the lake for obvious reasons. Mahopac gets pounded enough. I cant speak for Roland, but I do know Lee well and consider him one of my closest friends. There is no intent to misslead here, just his fullfilling a promise to a friend.

Last year at the Halloween Fall Classic on
Lake Mahopac, Lee and his partner finished third. This was the third year Lee has fished this event and he has been a sponsor of it the last two. His partner was his father in law Dewey, and it was the first time HE had ever fished the lake. Perhaps thats what Paladin was alluding to.

hahahahahaha How about they get to spend nearly a week in the same location fishing everyday..like a vacation. As for pre caught fish, I have heard rumors that certain hosts in the past had done that but was never substantiated. The famous green glove.

When we do a show, like the one with Pat X or Ben Lombardo, it was an all day long event to film about 1 to 2 hours of video. Then two full 12 hour days or more to edit the show. As for pre caught fish, that is the fastest way to extinction for the show and the host and would never consider that as it is just plain wrong.
That would mean expulsion from the OWAA, NYSOGA and all the other organizations we belong to.

At least we can claim it is a reality show, but whether it is survivor or I'm A Celebrity..Get Me Out of Here is anybody's guess.

the best part of these shows is knowing most is edited mung. bill dance with 15 4 and 5+ fish in a half an hour. watch the shadow lines and you aill see it is sunrise to sunset in 1/2 hour.

rich, don't take it as a personal insult to any show you have created. this is easy pickins. these shows are infomercials... almost all of them. god bless the guy that gets to fish everyday.

you asked a question and i answered with my educated consumer opinion. (after all that is the targeted area - the consumer - correct??) 5% reality and 95% hokus pokus.

they do it in porn too. only they take 3 mins of video and repeat, and loop it. 8 different camera angles. doesn't mean i don't like the shows.. fishing or porn. just an observation... don't belv the hype!!

no dig on lee either, as i didn't see the show, and don't know the man.

in response to a question....

Never took it any way other than I'm glad you guys know I put on an honest show. From the start 10 years ago, I try to make sure that a catch I made in the a.m. is one of the first ones shown in the beginning of the show and not at the end witht larger fish caught late in the day shown first. This way it takes you through the day. There are sometimes where it take two days to get a half dozen fish.

I don't look for numbers caught, just a few good fish to intertwine with the educational asprect of the show along with the tackle, rigging tips and all etc.

I never heard of Lee, but I support his keeping his promise. But I don't like lying, even if well-intentioned. If he thought saying that it was a NY lake was too specific, he could have just said "we're here on a small lake in the northeast", thus keeping a promise and telling the truth.

Having seen some of Rich Johnsons fishing shows, I feel that they are very different from the "norm"...

They are more about the fun and interplay between Rich and the Guest than they are about hype...

There is not an attempt to exagerrate catches or numbers in his shows.....

Nobody want's to go down the rocky road of what goes on behind the cameras.

Roland Martin, Bill Dance, Hank Parker, Jimmy Houston all have their "methods". Some of which I have discussed in prior posts.

Fact is, the fish do not perform to the camera, so "adjustments" are made to compensate.

I filmed two TV commercials on Mahopac and each time the fish were caught prior to filming. It just makes for better TV and cuts $$$$$ from the cost.

I can tell you that my boat has been used as a camera boat on several locations, including the
Potomac River, Lake Champlain, Hudson River and Lake Mahopac. The last "Mayo" I filmed there was with "The Fishing Line". I can tell you that all the action was "live" and as it took place! Credit goes to the anglers who just know that lake like the "back of their hand"

Tight Lines!
