Once in a lifetime outing

I went fishing yesterday. (No big deal, right) But I went fishing with my Dad. (still not a big revelation) However, This is the first time I ever went fishing with my father in my life. Yes, at 38 years of age I had never gone fishing with my Dad. Why, you might ask. Because my father doesn't fish. He doesn't like the water & doesn't like to be on a boat.
About 2 months ago I got the bright idea that I would like to share the love of my life (Bass Fishing) with my Dad. So I gave it a shot & asked him. To my suprise without hesitation he agreed to go out fishing with me.
To go one better, I also invited my brother Rob.
We went to
Oscawana Lake, the wind was blowing & we didn't have time to stop for breakfeast, which with my Dad can spell disaster.
When we got there I had to teach Dad at 60 years old how to cast for the first time. He picked it up real fast to my amazment.
Within 10 minutes we were all catching fish. We fished untill
12:30. Took about 15 keepers in all. With Dad catching the lunker (3 pounder) and a 30" pick.
Once again Bass fishing comes through for me. Providing the first time Dad, my brother & me ever spent anytime alone together without ending with somebody rolling around on the ground in a cloud of dust at the end.
I will remember that day always as one of the best times I ever had with my Dad.

But -- It`s not too late to try it again!!

Nick,

What a day this must have been for you. My Dad and I had our moments over time but fishing was always the neutralizer. He took me fishing all the time when I was young and it is still a great bond that we have. He doesnt do any fresh water anymore but I would love to take him out on a lake someday and teach him what I have learned. I am glad you took the chance and reached out like that. He probably will remember it as well as the best day ever spent with his sons.........

Keep him out of our tourneys though with those 3 pounders !!!!!!

Bass Rat,

Interesting you should mention this today. My Dad and I had not fished in a long time until this spring when I started fishing our little pond. He just went through a mess of a divorce with my mom (why would people do that after 40 years of marriage???, still confuses me) and has been pretty down lately. I think last night reeling in a 4 pounder was the happiest I have seen him in a long time. We aren't real good at talking about stuff with each other but fishing is a time when we can hang out without all of the other stuff in the world getting in the way, kinda nice. I too am 38 and understand exactly what you are saying.
I still can't get him to practice with the baitcaster, hates to try anything new.

JP. I did get the wife and girls out in VT. I love my kids to death but I would rather wrestle alligators than cram them all on a boat with flailing hooks again.LOL

God bless!

My dad passed on at 44 and we fished but once at Blue Point peers for Flounder. I caught my 1st fish with my dad. My true inspiration was grandpa! He and I would take trips every Saturday or so and fish
Long Island waters for saltwater species. A great man that inspired me in many ways.

Nick, that's great!

What a great way to spend a morning. It's funny how we want to share fishing with loved ones. You are lucky that you can do that. My sister lectures me about how fish perceive pain everytime we venture near the topic, which we don't do anymore. Of course, she also sends me PETA literature too... My dad will come out on the dock with me and wrestle the rod out of my hands and say "use your wrist this way, you'll catch more fish". I smile and try to encourage him to pick up a different rod, but for reason he thinks he's too busy. When I get a boat, he will be one of the first people on it, so he will finally have some time to fish.

Good for you!

SmileNick...

That was truly a touching post. As I recall, you had mentioned that you had never fished with your dad before when we were at the Mahopac Get-Together. It would seem that his expectations for the fishing part of the day were exceeded. And of course, dear old dad ALWAYS gets the lunker!

I learned to fish from my dad, who patiently untangled my rod, unsnagged me and set his rod down 100 times a day to teach me to fish and fix my mistakes. I have never forgotten those times.

You said you will never forget that day. I'm positive your dad won't, either.

Tight Lines...

That's cool that you were able to do that. Sounds like a good time. My dad used to take me and my brother fishing when we were real young, but now it's like pulling teeth to get him outta his house. My only memory of fishing with my dad is getting hooked in the finger when we were headed back home.

Oh well, it's cool you, your dad, and your brother were able to spend time together like that.

With three young ones on the boat you weren't actually expecting to get any fishing time in yourself were you?

Texas rigged Senkos (done in advance by you) with spincast outfits are relativily safe. But considering they're all girls you're probably right. You're better off with the alligators (sorry Meg & Tina, I couldn't resist that one).

Hey JP,

PLAY NICELY!!!!

I think you meant "Since they are all girls, their patience will far surpass that of most young boys", right?! My daughter can fish happily for hours, as long as her friends aren't watching. My son, on the other hand switches baits so often his line is never wet! I actually added a snap to his line...

In all honesty, there are many days I would go with the alligators too.

Nick,

That's great. My dad and I have had many memorable fishing trips together and I hope there will be many more to come.

I learned at a young age that memories are what keep loved ones alive in our hearts well after they have passed on. My uncle was mine and my dad's favorite fishing buddy and every weekend from early spring to the fall there was some sort of fishing going on, he past away at the age of 54, 27 years ago this coming fall. Anytime my dad and I are on the water together we reminisce about him and times we had together fishing, I am sure he has found great bass waters in Heaven and is waiting there for us.

But for now my dad is still here and we have shared some great days together and I cherish every minute of it and now we are working on making memories of my dad and myself for my son and hopefully my soon to be youngest son (who is only days away from being born, YIPEEE!!! )

Nick, I sure would have loved to share this fishing thing with my Dad, but he passed away very soon after I got into it, and so it never came to be....

The Big O is a really special place.....Now, after all the tears and everything are dried in this thread, I just have to ask you......30 inch pickerel????? Nicky, you are talking Northern pike dimensions? I caught one the day I was there that was about 22 or 23 and was really big.... I have caught a 25 inch Pick at Wampus and it was hell to bring in the boat...... I caught a 26 or 27 inch Northern at Bantam once and it took me a good 20 minutes to get it into the boat....

30 inches!! Nicky, it wasn't a misprint, was it? Did you at least take a picture of that brute??

Cool

The reason I got into fishing 42 years ago, was because of my father and his love of beer!

Sounds strange? Well let me explain:-

My father had a serious beer habit which required extensive elbow raising at a local pub in
London. The only way he could get out of the house was to take me (the brat!) with him. So he spent about $2.00 on a greenhart fly rod with a drum reel, sat me down on the banks of the River Thames in London and left me there. His knowledge of fishing could have been written on a postage stamp in upper case lettering, so I had to learn it all on my own, but I will ALWAYS give him the credit. I wonder what he would say if he could see what fishing in general has done for my life.

He would probably say "Lets get a beer and talk about it" LOL

"Cherish the memories as they are but a fleeting moment in time"

Wow !!! Nick, I didn't read this post until today and it sort of humbled me. My father is 71 and in great shape and I now know that even though he has fished with me a few times, (it was some time ago and not when I was as serious about it as I am now) I have to take him with me now and on my boat and get some new time together !!! We have always been close and this is the way to remain close !!! Thanks for making me realize this !!!

You should go out as much as possible with your dad.

I lost my best fishing partner last week and it is a very difficult thing to think about being on the lake without him.

And yes -- he was my father-in-law!
