A thoughtful poll: What is your biggest fishing FEAR?
I started to think about
what would be the most common (or uncommon for that matter) fears one would
have on a fishing trip? Getting skunked? Coming just ounces away from winning a
tourney? Falling overboard?
Well, I pose the question to you all: What, if any, are your biggest
trepidations before you get on a body of water (new or familiar)?
For me - PLEASE DON'T LAUGH! - my biggest fear (although it doesn't really overtake
me too much), is trying a new body of water, and coming close to a nest of
wasps or bees and getting stung! I don't know why, but my one true phobia is of
stinging insects! (Bees, wasps, hornets), I don't know why - I've never been
stung. Maybe it's either the fear that I will have a dangerous allergic
reaction, or that it'll just HOIT LIKE A MUTHA! I know most of you are thinking
"What is going through Jared's head these days!" But I actually saw a
hornets nest swarming with little poison fliers at Wampus Pond last week, and
it got me thinking - maybe that IS truly my deepest fishing fear. Other than
that, I fear that if I fall overboard somehow, I could get entangled in weeds -
that actually happened to my cousin once, and it was panic time! So, I'm just
curious what all of our biggest "fisherman's fears" are?

Hmm, I'd have to say my
fears when fishing are ticks, (poisonous) snakes, and capsizing or rupturing
the boat. The potential of losing stuff in the water and the idea of falling in
myself kinda bothers me too.
Maybe I'm just a little high-strung sometimes, or maybe I've just really become
more accustomed to being indoors. To be honest, I wouldn't be much of an
outdoorsman if it wasn't for fishing.

My biggest fear is
getting my boat in and out of the water. I rebuilt in older boat, and the last
thing I want to have happen to it is for it to get damaged putting it in or out
of the water. Also I fear getting Skunked, but this summer has helped(since
I've been skunked numerous times).![]()

LOL!!!! Jared, great time for me to tell you my story. Last Saturday I was fishing Grant Park in Hewlett. The pond has a lot of overhanging willow trees. I was shore fishing and had one leg up on a stump when it cracked in half to reveal a very angry hornets nest. By the time I heard the buzzing it was to late. 3 stings in the leg, 1 in the neck and 1 on the elbow happened almost all at once. I ran about 30 yards away and stopped to check if there had been any pursuit. I thought I was safe for the moment untill I was attacked again , this time in the kidney area. It seemed 2 of the bastards had somehow got inside my shirt. ( Thanks to my 2XXL NYbass t-shirt there's plenty of room inside to fly around and sting me more!!! LOL!!!) I kept running, ripped my shirt off and was going to dive into the water next untill I saw I was 100 yards away with no more incoming enemy bombers. I've been stung in the past, but never 8-9 times and let me tell that poison is potent if you have enough in your viens. My body was burning and my throat felt like it was going to close, NO JOKE. The stings by my kidney blew up like a golf ball. The only thing that stopped me from leaving was that my car keys were in my plano box back on the ground next to the stump. So like any die hard NY Basser I kept fishing till dark, snuck back and grabbed my box and headed home. Don't think I'll be going back to Grant Park anytime soon (bad taste in my mouth!!!)

I cant say I fear any of
the elements I face in the waters I fish.
I fish day or night from a Kayak in fresh and salt.
Biggest fear in fresh is hooking into a big Northern when I am up state and it
being the fish of a life time and we have to get face to face in order for me
to release him properly. Dont want that thing in my lap or in my face
necessarily.
Salt it would have to be night time blues from the Kayak. They cruise the
waters where I bass fish and you just dont want them that close to you in the
Yak....and in the dark.

My only one really is
night fishing on lakes that have outboards. too many idiots i've seen booze it
up all eve and then take the ski boat out for a spin in the dark.
I probably should fear falling overboard since i don't swim, but i suppose i'm
used to that from the first time i went under.

current......
i really fear nothing on the water as much as i fear current. Current will kill
a strong swimmer as easily as a bad one.
the worst current i have seen is on the hudson. i have seen guys, panic near a suckhole and under the bridge we go. i
allways have the presence of mind to grab my seat out of the pedestal before we
go under. but i have seen people panic and get seats ripped out of the deck. we
were once anchored on outgound tide, fishing a suckhole and a full size
telephone pole floated into the boat. when we left 15 minutes later that pole
was a good 1/2 mile down river.
i also have had a few days on the hudson where the boat i was in was not nearly big enough. me and my buddy
will fished one of those rip van vinkle events back in the day. we were
supposed to launch out of charles writer but at the last minute they changed
the launch to catskill.. we rode back to the roundout creek because thats where
are fish were. the ride was flat and we made it in 40 minutes. 17.5 skeeter witha
90. it snowed and sleeted on us and we were the high bag in the roundout.
when it came time to leave a guy stopped us in the mouth of the roundout and
begged us not to go out there. we did!!!!! it took us 2 hours and 45 minutes to
make it back. we made it with 15 minutes to spare. THERE WERE 5-6 FOOT ROLLERS
OUT THEIR.
WE WERE FROZEN. we took so many over the bow of the boat we sat in seat high
water for miles. when we got to the dock i had ice in my goatee. i was so
frozen that i couldn't get my knees to bend. i got walking and felt better. when
i sat in the truck, i could n't get the key in the ignition i was shaking so
bad. we weighed our fish took an early lead on the board with 18 pounds 5
ounces. 45 minutes later it was all over we wound up 18th out of 100+ boats.
respect the hudson

once took 5 hours to get back to fire island from the Virginia.
Wind blew up all of a sudden from the northwest at about 30 knots. Took it on
the snout all the way in. Steady 5's with an occasional 8 thrown to keep it
interesting. Got home and slept like a baby. This was in September about 10

Im with Jarad and Mikey
on this one. One of my biggest fears is Venomous Snakes, Spiders, Stinging
insects and any other funkys that can do harm to you. Think about it. If you
get bit or stung especially if you are allergic or it happens to be a very
potent venom. What do you do? Most people dont have the proper training to deal
with a situation such as this one. I happen to be lucky to have some basic
training, but not enough. Toxins can have a very nasty long term affect on
people if treated poorly. Also what if you are by yourself? If you have an
allergic reaction how will you drive the boat back to the ramp. Assuming that
there is a ramp. Also what if you are on a secluded lake? Is there a way to
contact people? A cell phone would come in handy if there is service. Many
other questins come to mind on this particular thread. Thankfully in New York there are very few venomous
creatures. It is not like we are fishing in Austrailia (which I hear is quite
good). Still caution should be exercised. You never know what
"family" pet was recently relased. Also you can not live in fear of
these instances. You just have to be prepared if something happens, and deal
with it the best you can.

Yea Maximus I read your
post before I wrote mine. I know how it feels. Unfortunately I am allergic to
those little nasties. Because of that I have to carry Benedryl around with me.
Drawback: Benedryls reaction is that it makes me tired and unable to function
properly. Thankfully I have not had that incident yet, but I am always
prepared. That is one reason I never fish a new body of water alone.

Max, that really sucks...but I would have loved to see you run around like a maniac. My fear is about drowning while wading, the thought of bluegills or crawdads pecking out my open eyes as I lay motionless on the stream bed does not appeal to me at all.

Had a great day ---- Got over 25 snakes and only came close to being bitten
once. Afterwards , we found out they were ALL COPPERHEADS!!!!!

Snakes.. Worst thing is
fishing on Shore and as your walking you just catch the snake as your going to
step on it slithering outta the way.. Freaks me out every time! (even if it's
not poisonous)
One time fishing a pond from shore I stumbled upon and almost stepped on the
same snake three times... Each clearing/rocky area we would scare him away, as
we went to fish it and he would just move down the shore to the next clear
area, then not knowing we would go to the next cleared out area where he was
sunning and he would move again lol

Besides me falling into
the depths while night fishing a river(which damn near happened 3 years
ago)...there is just one other thing. Something that brings the I am going to
kill you response out of me...
Wading in a deep river hole, I am in 2 feet of water casting into 8-10, I can't
see all the way to the bottom where I am casting. Jig gets hung 3 feet straight
out in front of me...I take a step towards it . I am in 3 feet of water now and
can no longer see the wading boots...I jiggle the rod tip, still hung. I do the
bow and arrow trick to no avail. I stick my rod tip in the water and down to my
jig. It's hung good. I reach into the water freeing the jig....I look back down
and see a snapping turtle the size of a tortoise staring up at me as if I am
his next meal. I am big and I am mean but when they get you you are got.
I HATE those things.
I have had exactly 4 VERY close run ins with them while wading and they make me
want to fire up the stove for a soup dinner...
T
Then there was this time while trout fishing in the spring of the year I had to
hop a fence from a bull, I still have a scar from my lack of hop....![]()

Snakes,
slippery rocks while wearing chest waders
Snakes - usually while
trout fishing in late spring I will run across a copperhead or two, but I have
come across a rattlesnake as well, to many times have I looked down by my feet
to see a snake laying there. The other part of this fear is when I have to
cross through tall grass and weeds to get to either a stream or lake, always
feared that snake in the grass.
Although out of both snakes, copperhead or
rattler, I would much rather deal with the rattlesnake, most times they give
you a warning (rattling) when you get close to them.
Remember those old Ball chest waders, heavey rubber coated canvas, rubber soled
boots (long before the nice neoprene waders that fit snuggly around the torso
with felt soles) that most times when you stepped onto a rock that had a hint
of moss on you were struggling to keep upright, well at a very young age I
remember the story of a guy out trout fishing falling into one of the very fast
moving rivers in Northern NJ and seeing the search helicopter and town fire
depts. along the river scouring the banks looking for the guy, sometime that
night 20 miles away in either Passaic or Paterson NJ they found his body, those
boots had filled, flipped him over so his feet were upright and the boots had
just enough air in them to keep his head held under, not the way I want to
go!!!
